Lesson Plans From the Drama Teacher's Resource Room
This lesson submitted and written by Stephanie Forbes.
Theatre History : "Student presentations of eras
and styles

AIMS
: To look at the eras of theatre history
using a multi- media approach.
GRADES:
STRATEGIES
: Small groups of 3-5
LESSON:
*This lesson plan was devised for a Theatre I course (or
possibly II). I use it at the end of the year.
Objectives In groups of 4-5, students will choose an era of Theatre History ( I give them a list to choose from). Then, each student in the group will choose a research topic for that era ( I give them a list). The group will present their findings in a 20-30 minute oral presentation (they are teaching the class that era of history). Each group will also choose a short scene from a play from their chosen era. The scene must accommodate everyone in the group. They will rehearse and perform the scene after their groups oral presentation. Must create Visual Aids to accompany oral presentation. Materials: use of library for research, any texts you have to help them, copies of scenes, poster board, scissors, glue, etc.

Background
Canadian theatre? Canadian drama? Does it exist? Where did it come from?
Canada is a cultural mosaic - therefore representation from all regions are required to fully understand the "Canadian Experience" in theatre.
Across this nation our playwrights attempt to unite us through literature which represents each facet of regional life. However, it was not until the 1970's that Canadian could watch the fruits of their labor being produced within our own borders.
There are several myths which attempt to explain the absence of Canadian produced plays up until this time. According to Mavor Moore, total geographical unity was impossible in a country of our size and that regionalism was inevitable. Northrop Frye: "Identity is local and regional, rooted in the imagination and in the works of culture; unity is national in reference, international in perspective and rooted in political feeling." (The bush Garden, Toronto, Anansi Press, 1971)
This is perhaps more important now than ever before. Our very geographical status is in the balance, as well as our cultural and historical unity. Some plays have attempted to traverse this issue, namely the precedence setting

Canadian Theatre History - Bibliographies The foundation of a Canadian Drama bibliography can be found in one volume published by ECW Press in 1993: Since 1993, John Ball and Richard Plant have added annual updates to their original work. These updates have been included in the newsletter of the Association for Canadian Theatre Research. The search engine on this site contains the (roughly) 16,000 entries of both the original Ball and Plant bibliography, and the subsequent annual updates. Permission to make data from the original publication available was kindly granted by the publisher, ECW Press . Of necessity, this search engine follows the electronic structure behind that original volume, which means it has proved impossible to separate elements of the individual dates sufficiently to allow a precisely chronological search engine printout. Each entry from the original bibliography is cited with the reference number assigned to it in that volume. Search the ACTS Bibliography

Grand Forks, North Dakota Text and Photos By Christopher P. Jacobs
(Excerpted from a forthcoming history of movie theatres in Grand Forks)
Last updated January 10, 1999 It was a time of new technology, new ideas, and new opportunities. Life in general was becoming more exciting and more complicated. Early November, 1919—daylight savings time, which had been put into effect during World War I, had just been abolished. The Great War had been over for about a year, as had the deadly influenza epidemic. Governor Lynn J. Frazier was ready to take over operation of North Dakota’s coal mines to settle a strike. Editorials and letters to the editor warned about Reds, anarchists, and the Non-partisan League. Count Ilya Tolstoy was scheduled to speak in Grand Forks on "The Truth About Russia." The Dakota Playmakers from the University were preparing for a two-day Ibsen festival which they would get to perform in the opulent Metropolitan Theatre downtown. Construction was being completed on the New Grand, the largest theatre in town ever built for the purpose of showing only moving pictures. This new theatre would operate for a longer period of time than any other theatre ever built in Grand Forks, changing its name twice after extensive remodeling projects. Shortly after sound films were introduced the New Grand became the Paramount for about 25 years, and after it modernized again and converted to CinemaScope it was renamed the Empire, the name it has held for the longest time.

Space Reserved A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PARAMOUNT THEATRE Oakland's Paramount Theatre is one of the finest remaining examples of Art Deco design in the United States. Designed by renowned San Francisco architect Timothy L. Pflueger and completed in late 1931, it was one of the first Depression-era buildings to incorporate and integrate the work of numerous creative artists into its architecture and is particularly noteworthy for its successful orchestration of the various artistic disciplines into an original and harmonious whole.
Construction was initiated by Publix Theatres, the exhibiting organization of Paramount Pictures. Although financial difficulties forced the sale of the uncompleted building to Fox-West Coast Theatres, the firm that completed the theatre and operated it until it closed on September 15, 1970, the name "Paramount" was retained.
After its initial brief blaze of "movie palace" glory in the 1930's, this remarkable auditorium suffered three decades of neglect and decline until its rescue by the Oakland Symphony, the City of Oakland and numerous private donors. The building was purchased by the Board of Directors of the Oakland Symphony Orchestra Association in 1972. A painstaking and

About Us // Festival Theatre // History The Edinburgh Festival Theatre opened in 1994, on Edinburgh’s longest continuous theatre site. The Nicolson Street locale has been a theatre site sine 1830 – in sixty years it was Dunedin Hall, the Royal Amphitheatre, Alhambra Music Hall, the Queen’s Theatre and Newsome’s Circus.
On 7 November 1892, Edward Moss, as managing director of the Edinburgh Empire Palace Ltd, opened the doors of his magnificent Empire Palace Theatre. Thus began the famous Moss Empires’ chain of theatres. It was built by the great British theatre architect, Frank Matcham, with lavish decoration: elephants with Nubian riders, nymphs and cherubs abounded the plasterwork. The original Empire Palace Theatre sat 3000 theatregoers on four plush levels of green, cream and tobacco gold.
At the opening performance were the massed bands of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the Carabiniers, a thirty strong orchestra, vocal soloists, comedians, mimics, horses, performing dogs and acrobats! Hundreds of top artists played the Empire, Vesta Tilley, Marie Lloyd, Anna Pavlova and Charlie Chaplin to name but a few. There was practically nothing that could not be performed in the early days – in one performance there was even a large model airship, controlled by wireless, which dropped paper pigeons on the audience!

THEATRE HISTORY
Despite the popularity of such acts, audiences in the late 1920s and early 1930s had begun to lose interest in vaudeville, and in 1931 the theatre was converted into a movie palace, initially presenting films with live stage shows, and then eventually showing only movies. When movie audiences began staying at home to watch television in the 1950s, the theatre managers, hoping to attract larger audiences, booked occasional Broadway shows into the theatre, such as "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" starring Carol Channing.
During the late 1950s, the Palace was fitted with special equipment to show films in Cinerama. During the mid-1970s, the management of the Bismarck Hotel transformed the auditorium into a banquet hall by removing the seats on the orchestra level and bringing the floor flush with the stage. In 1984, the theatre, now renamed the Bismarck Theatre, was converted into a rock venue. Sporadically used during the 1990s, the venue was completely restored and renovated during 1999, and renamed the Cadillac Palace.
Soon the theater fell into disrepair. In an effort to preserve the theatre, it was added to the Federal National Registry of Historic Places in 1978, but the building continued to crumble. The theatre was closed to the public in 1981, and the site was considered for a two-story, 50,000 square-foot shopping mall and a 1,600 seat cinema. In 1996, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley announced that the Oriental would be restored to its original grandeur for the presentation of live stage musicals by Livent, Inc. Renamed Ford Center for the Performing Arts in 1997, the restoration of the theatre was completed in October 1998, at which time it was opened with the Chicago premiere of "Ragtime." The venue was acquired by SFX Theatrical Group in 1999, and its production of "Fosse" debuted at the Ford Center before embarking on a national tour. The list of hits goes on including the pre-Broadway of "Blast" in 2000, as well as the world premiere of "Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz" in January 2003.
