5. Children's Theatre History And Background
A bit of History. In the United States, Children's Theatre's history is relatively brief. It began to grow as a respectable branch of theatre in the early 1900's.

A bit of History
Charlotte Chorpenning
Charlotte Chorpenning made tremendous contributions to Children's Theatre. Shortly after her husband died, she decided that she wanted to write plays for children. She was 60 then. She began working as the artistic director for the Goodman Theatre in Chicago where she stayed for 21 years. All the while was writing plays. In the time from when she began writing, until the day she died with a play in the works in her typewriter (literally), she managed to double the mid-century repertoire for children's plays by herself She typically adapted well known titles such as Little Red Riding Hood , or The Emperor's New Clothes to name a couple. This was primarily based on the premise that children would desire to go see plays that they recognize the titles of. This was the trend in TYA for quite some time, but has more recently veered away from that concept, and many more original works are being written. But Chorpenning saw a Universal quality in fairy tales and tended to adapt quite a few of them. In fairy tales she saw the archetypal issues of growing up, and if children could identify with a character, or characters, in a play, then they would have more interest in the play. This concept is quite true and followed even today. There is even a children's literary award given to playwrights called the Charlotte B. Chorpenning Award

Exploring the Globe Outside of Virtual Renaissance

My father (an accomplished player in his time) almost left us in ruin by the time that he died. In 1596, always on the prowl for a way to make money, he had spent a considerable sum converting an old friary into a theatre with the intention of becoming its housekeeper (owner of the playhouse) so that he could share in the profits that the acting troupe would make on each performance. I have a playbill around here somewhere, ah, yes, here it is. (Playbill - JPEG 58k)
Well, some of the locals were outraged, calling it a public nuisance - a disturbance! Our company of 'players' was considered just that - players! (In the church's eyes, we don't really create a usable product - one you can put your fingers on like the blacksmith's ironworks and the cobbler's shoes.) Well, mind you, we have a loyal - and royal - audience, but that didn't change stubborn minds on the Privy Council. Granted, our plays lure playgoers away from their work. But that's no excuse for what happened next. (We can only perform during the day with sunlight to illuminate the stage.)
Let me read to you what the Privy Council said! And I quote . . .

Notices
The next meeting of the International Federation for Theatre Research will be in St. Petersburg May May 27, 2004. In conjunction with this meeting, the IFTR Scenography Working Group invites submissions of Abstracts for our sessions at the forthcoming IFTR/FIRT meeting in St. Petersburg Within the larger theme of the conference, our sessions will focus upon fundamental questions regarding the interaction between the director and the designer and its effects on theatre space and performance. We wish to explore the following issues: What is the nature of collaboration between designer and director? How do design teams implement directorial concepts? How are issues of mise Prior to the advent of the director, who held this role and how did this affect the design production process? Papers on these issues and related topics may be proposed within the following areas: history of scenography in performing arts; scenographic theory and practice; costume design; lighting and sound design; design for dance and multimedia performance; mask, puppet, and object theatre; contemporary live art and visual theatre companies.
