In conjunction with this meeting, the IFTR Scenography Working Group invites submissions of Abstracts for our sessions at the forthcoming IFTR/FIRT meeting in St. Petersburg Within the larger theme of the conference, our sessions will focus upon fundamental questions regarding the interaction between the director and the designer and its effects on theatre space and performance. We wish to explore the following issues: What is the nature of collaboration between designer and director? How do design teams implement directorial concepts? How are issues of mise Prior to the advent of the director, who held this role and how did this affect the design production process? Papers on these issues and related topics may be proposed within the following areas: history of scenography in performing arts; scenographic theory and practice; costume design; lighting and sound design; design for dance and multimedia performance; mask, puppet, and object theatre; contemporary live art and visual theatre companies.

Ancient Theatre of Sikyon
O n the eastern side of the Acropolis of Ancient Sikyon was built its theatre of the 4th c. B.C. with a 'terminus ante quem' in 251 B.C., close to the ancient Agora of the city.
T he ancient theatre of Sikyon is considered to be amongst one of the most impressive theatres of this size with a diameter of 20 m for the orchestra and 125 m for the cavea. The latter, separated in two by an ambulatory (diazoma), is divided into15 wedge-shaped cunei (kerkides) by 16 radiating staircases. The steps of tiers have not been precisely defined as the excavations of the cavea have not yet been completed. Along the orchestra are placed the backed seats of the officials with particularly well worked 'ereisinota' and 'ereisicheira'.The upper ambulatory has two vaulted passages at each end, whilst at the entrances (parodoi) there are gates similar to those of the theatre of the Asklepieion at Epidaurus
The scenic building consists of a proscenium and the stage itself divided in many rooms. During a later building phase, the proscenium was replaced by a constructed pulpitum. The 'frons scaenae'was decorated with sculptures and rich architectural elements. Apart for theatrical representations, the theatre was also used for political meetings. T he first excavations at Sikyon were conducted in 1887-91 by the American School of Classical Studies. At the beginning of the 20th century (1920), they were continued by the Archeological Society which until now has maintained the right to excavate and to uncover the theatre.
