Return to index Playbox Theatre Centre is dedicated to the creation, interpretation and promotion of theatre that reflects Australia's cultural diversity, our place in the contemporary world and, particularly, the Asia/Pacific region in which we live. Since it's foundation in 1976, Playbox has presented over 180 Australian plays, the majority as premieres. Of those, a third have toured or transferred to regional Victoria, interstate or overseas. In particular, the company's strong links with Asia have resulted in tours to and exchanges with China, Japan, India, South Korea and The Philippines. Primarily Playbox works to foster a national repertoire of Australian plays. This process involves the production and creation of new work through commissioning writers, hosting play readings, workshops and script assessments, and also the reinterpretation of existing drama in the light of contemporary values and concerns. Playbox has gained a reputation for creating dynamic and progressive theatre and is partly responsible for the strength of the Australian theatrical industry and the diversity and success of Australian writers both here and overseas.

    History
The Scottish Theatre Archive forms part of the Department of Special Collections of Glasgow University Library. Its role is to help preserve Scotland's theatrical heritage by providing a safe home for archival material and by making it accessible to all those interested in Scottish theatre. It also acts as a major information centre for enquiries related to theatre in Scotland providing information from its own holdings or by directing researchers to other repositories. The Archive was founded in 1981 with funding from the Scottish Arts Council. Further money was provided by some charitable organisations including the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Scottish International Education Trust and the Duncan Macrae Memorial Fund. Since 1985, however, the University Library alone has been responsible for its funding and staffing. image displayed here is STA JLC 43/4
Since 1981 the Archive has grown enormously, and continues to expand rapidly. Its content is of much wider popular interest than many archives in university libraries. As well as providing a resource for undergraduate and postgraduate study at the University, the Archive is an invaluable research tool and reference centre for scholars, students, theatrical practitioners and historians, and members of the public from all parts of the world. Use of the Archive is free of charge.

Welcome to San Jose Repertory Theatre Timothy Near
    Artistic Director
It is early 2004 here in Silicon Valley. We are half way through a marvelous season. Theatre is more important now than ever before. Where else can we gather together to contemplate life on this earth? The Rep's 03-04 season will supply you with intelligent entertainment. Our plays are chosen to stimulate, celebrate and enhance understanding of ourselves and others. When you come to the Rep you can count on quality. Quality is vitally important to us. We choose our artists from a national pool of the respected, the talented and the skillful. Our casting director, Bruce Elsperger and/or I see practically every show there is in the Bay Area and we also hold auditions in NY, LA, SF and sometimes in Seattle, Oregon, Chicago, and San Diego as well. Our Production Manager, Nick Nichols and I are in touch with and draw from a national pool of the best designers in the country. Our sets and costumes and soundtracks are built here at the theatre by skilled, experienced craftspeople. The '03-'04 season was chosen to give us relief for difficult times. I have sought out plays that express an optimistic, humanist and enlightened aesthetic. These are plays that infuse light into dark times.
