News Topics Introduction Projects ... Links Springboard for Theatre General Directors The Hanover Schauspiel Hanover is a golden springboard to higher posts. As a city on the threshold to real importance, it is ideal not only for rehearsing to become German Chancellor, as once did Gerhard Schr¶der as the Minister President of Lower Saxony. As recommendation for the directorship of a German metropolitan stage, Hanover has hitherto also offered precisely the right field of tension: spectacular successes appear at once as spots in the Berlin and Hamburg news, while the mediocre and unsuccessful on the other hand enjoy the mercy of provincial oblivion. While General Director of the Hanover Schauspiel, Eberhard Witt was appointed to the Bayerische Staatstheater in Munich, Ulrich Khuon switched to the Thalia in Hamburg, and Wilfred Schulz, the present incumbent, will in all probability continue the tradition – especially since, after coming to Hanover as chief dramatic advisor of the most successful German stage of the nineties, the Deutsche Schauspielhaus in Hamburg under Frank Baumbauer, he has succeeded in maintaining the proven quality of his work. Classics interpreted with radical contemporaneity, a strong emphasis on contemporary drama, and faith in the younger generation of directors, have proven their worth in Lower Saxony, too. Encouragement of the new And Schulz has intensified this trend to the pitch of adventure, making an avant garde virtue of provincial necessity. Lacking the attraction of stars (who could be lured to Hanover only during Schulz’s first season and only because of his excellent connections), he has deliberately and successfully promoted the new: “Hamlet”, mirrored by Nicolas Stemann in contemporary media society, was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen; the engagement of the local but more than locally famous Pop artist Mousse T (“Sex Bomb", “Horny”) for the musical “Alice” finally brought German theatre into the musical present; and the many adaptations of contemporary novels (Michel Houellebecq, Karen Duve, Rainald Goetz, Ray Bradbury and Vladimir Nabokov) have become almost a trademark of the programme.

America's transfer from civil war to peace was made more difficult on April 14, 1865, when Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed, just five days after General Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. A well-known actor, John Wilkes Booth, desperate to aid the dying Confederacy, stepped into the president's box. Booth's decision to pull the trigger altered the nation's power to reconstruct after the war. Booth escaped into the night as Abraham Lincoln was carried to the Petersen boarding house across the street. It was there that President Lincoln died early the next morning, and became the first American president to be assassinated.
