December 2000 Introduction :
"With their instantly recognisable songs, the works of Rodgers & Hammerstein dominated the world of musical theatre for over 17 years. But it was their very first Broadway collaboration above all others which set the standard worldwide, a standard by which shows are judged even today. "The purpose of Trevor Nunn's revival was to create a production that attempted to update the show that had re-written the rules of musical theatre. "By making the most of the spirit of the original writing, Trevor Nunn's plan was to bring out subtleties of acting that might appeal to a modern audience." Trevor Nunn : "Oscar Hammerstein was such a wonderful dramatist and therefore his lyrics are very readily speakable as soliloquy, as dramatic exchange between characters. "For the last 40 years or so certain elements of the original material traditionally have been cut and have disappeared. So knowing that there was a real breadth and a real seriousness, it was a wonderful project to do, knowing that there were things that could be reintroduced for a contemporary audience."

(CNN) Every year, the Oscars are a parade of the best Hollywood has to offer an elegant display of gowns, tuxes and beautiful faces. But as much as the hundreds of millions viewers see worldwide, there's lots more that happens behind the scenes. The planning for the ceremony begins months ahead of time, usually commenced by the choice of a producer. Joe Roth, whose credits include, "Daddy Day Care," took the helm this past year. Then the work of deciding a host begins by first asking the question, "Is Billy available?"

BRINGING PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES
ON BROADWAY By
Gordon Greenberg
Growing up in the suburbs of New York City, there was no greater high for me than a day trip to Manhattan. In addition to the requisite stop at my father's favorite knish joint on Houston Street, we would inevitably see a play or a musical on Broadway. I considered myself fortunate to be able to snap photos of myself under marquees, hoard playbills, and produce backyard facsimiles starring my brother and sister. I never imagined that I would actually have the opportunity to perform on Broadway and, subsequently, direct the very people I had gawked at on stage. For me, there is no substitute for the visceral thrill of theatre. In an age where we tend to isolate more often than not - on line and in line - theatre is a shared experience. Unlike the cinema, it demands audience participation in order to be fully realized. Stories are told through visual, aural and literary cues that ask us to fill in the blanks. Such non-literal, non-linear approaches encourage us to think as individuals; to have fresh ideas; to think, as my friends in management consulting like to say, "outside the box". Inspired by these thoughts, as well as the excellent education programs at the non-profit theatres I had worked at, I brought the idea of "living study guides" and creativity workshops tied to Broadway shows to the good folks at Theatre Direct International. With their unflagging support, my partners (producer Pam Pariseau and study guide author Peter Royston) and I created

Behind The Scenes at Elegies
a history by Bruce D. Bossard

For most people seeing the April 2nd benefit of Bill Russell and Janet Hood's Elegies For Angels, Punks And Raging Queens at the Haft Theater at the Fashion Institute of Technology, it will probably be a first time experience. The show, usually performed with over 30 speaking roles and 4 singers, is rarely done because of the massive financial and casting considerations. It has, however, been a boon for colleges, community theaters and benefit organizations who would like to use as many actors as are available to them! I have a long history with Elegies . I know the creators and have been alongside them from the very inception of the show. So Talkin' Broadway thought it might be nice for me to share a little bit of history about this very special theater piece with the denizens of our favorite web site. The thought of writing a piece about the effect AIDS was having in the world came to Bill Russell when in 1987 he went to the first showing of the gigantic Names Project Quilt which was displayed in Washington, D.C. Bill was overwhelmed by the vastness of the quilt and the deep losses so many people, and Bill himself, had endured of many friends and theater co-workers. While thinking about a way to put this vast subject matter into a theatrical setting, Bill thought back to one of his personal favorite literary and theater pieces, Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, a series of poems about the townspeople of the fictional town of Spoon River who were all buried in the local cemetery. In 1963

ABT: A Dashing Mix of Old and New
by John Ardoin The concept behind the founding of American Ballet Theatre was not simply the creation of a truly American company, but one that combined the best ballets from the past with works by gifted new choreographers. In fulfilling this mission, the company hoped to reaffirm the past and contribute to the future of dance. That goal was admirably achieved by the company's founding directors Lucia Chase, Richard Pleasant, and Oliver Smith during even the first year of its existence.
Vladimir Malakhov, Parrish Maynard, and Keith Roberts in "Remanso." Among the works seen during ABT's first season in New York were Fokine's "Les Sylphides" and "Le Carnaval," prepared under his direction; "Giselle" and act two of "Swan Lake" in versions by Anton Dolin; Bronislava Nijinska's setting of "La Fille Mal Gardée"; "The Great American Goof," a new work by Eugene Loring to a libretto by William Saroyan; Mikhail Mordkin's "Voices of Spring"; and three works by Antony Tudor, who has been called "the artistic conscience of American Ballet Theatre" "Jardin aux Lilas," "Dark Elegies," and "Judgment of Paris." These works set a style that was old and new, lyrical and brash one that has remained a hallmark of ABT today. Through the years, few companies have been able to boast so wide a range of choreographic works. In a given season with ABT, one can see the great Russian classics such as "Swan Lake" or "Sleeping Beauty," modern classics like "Rodeo" and "Apollo," and new contemporary pieces such as "Airs," "Push Comes to Shove," and "Duets." The company has embraced dance works of Marius Petipa, Léonide Massine, George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Agnes de Mille, and Twyla Tharp, to skim only the cream off the top of the choreographers who have played a major role in ABT's history. There have been a parade of great dancers such as Alicia Alonso, Mikhail Baryshnikov (who also served as the company's artistic director from 1980 to 1990), Carla Fracci, Erik Bruhn, Natalia Makarova, Rudolf Nureyev, and Alicia Markova. For all of these legends, at one time or another, ABT was their artistic home.

The Hat, the Kilt and the Wardrobe John Laurie is the wardrobe supervisor on Monarch of the Glen, and he came to the set of Glenbogle in the Scottish highlands via ancient Rome and a Spice Girl-filled Turkey! He spends his days in amongst Molly's shoes, Archie's jeans and Duncan's t-shirts, having the responsibility of making sure that all the characters' clothes are present, correct and ready to wear for fliming. John's job is to ensure that the actors are clothed consistently, and that there are no errors in continuity when scenes are filmed on different days. We asked John about how he finds his job dressing the stars of the show, and also had a nosy at the wardrobe to look at key fashion items from Monarch's history. WHEREFORE ART THOU: “The Balcony” cast performs a puppeteer exercise. As if general auditions were not challenging enough, three dozen hopefuls for Nomadic Theatre’s “The Balcony” returned on Saturday morning for another grueling day in front of director Karen Berman. Some of them started as early as 10 a.m. and, instead of reading monologues and acting like rock stars, they were asked to perform actual lines from the play. “It was probably the longest callback I’d ever been to,” says Christina Ciocca (COL ’05), “but one of the most interesting and exciting, too.” Ciocca was cast as Irma, leader of the brothel and main character of the show. A demanding role from the start, she and male lead Michael Benz (COL’ 04), didn’t leave until 6:45 p.m., performing with all of the other characters to test their chemistry together. For Berman, the differences in chemistry were often negligible.

You may want to give your students some background on the roles involved in creating a theatre production. Feel free to print or copy the information below.
The magic of theatre involves the playwright, actors, designers, a director, the audience and many other people. They all work to make the audience believe that what happens on the stage is real. Following are some of those people and their roles in making theatre come alive.
Playwright
Director
  • Stage Managers
Stage Crews are responsible for putting the sets in place, moving or changing sets and props. Dressers help the actors put on their costumes, especially when an actor comes back stage and quickly has to change into another costume for the next scene.
A theatre before a play is performed is like an empty black box. Once a play is selected for production, designers read the play script and work to create the look and feel of the play. Everything you see and hear on the stage brings a play to life and has been purposely selected by the designers for just the right effect.
  • Set Designers Set Designers can make the audience believe that the stage is a ship, a prison, or the moon. Pieces of painted canvas and wood that help create this sense of place on the stage are called sets. A play can have one or many sets. Smaller objects on the stage, also used to create a sense of place, are called properties, or props for short. A prop might be a worn-out sofa, an old-fashioned telephone, or a suitcase carried by an actor. All sets are drawn out ahead of time in a set design.

BODY Behind the Scenes: Florida Film Festival
Every medium has the potential to impact an audience, but none has fulfilled that potential more than the film industry. Generations have been mesmerized by motion pictures since the opening of the first cinema. Within a single frame, a film can test our emotions, help us conquer fears of murderous dolls, alter our perceptions on important issues, or bring us infinite laughter.
Films have proven to be such effective communication tools that many people are making their own. Whether they're shooting home movies or penning the great American screenplay, it seems everyone is itching to get into the movie business. But film festivals separate the true artists from the hacks. Once a year, Orlando's Florida Film Festival provides a home for those artists.
The Florida Film Festival (FFF) was founded in 1992 by Enzian Theater owners Philip and Sigrid Tiedtke (pronounced “tiki”). Located in Maitland, The Enzian is the local art house cinema dedicated to showcasing independent and alternative films. FFF is an extension of the venue's mission, but it has grown into much more. In its eleven years, FFF has evolved into one of Central Florida's more popular events and was ranked as the #8 film festival in the world by the Ultimate Film Fest Survival Guide, which is considered the Bible of film festivals by most in the industry. Unlike some of the bigger fests, FFF maintains a cozy, low-key atmosphere that many find refreshing.
What makes the festival so cozy? Attribute it to the people behind the scenes who devote themselves to all facets of the festival. The Enzian staff works hard year-round in order to provide two weeks of film fun. Several of them travel around to other festivals, checking out the new trends and scouting possible spotlight films; others stick to home-based duties such as writing grants, taking ticket reservations, and getting corporate sponsors. In addition to the regular staff, FFF manages to pull in about 160 volunteers each year. "Our volunteers are the heart and soul of the festival," says festival director Sigrid Tiedtke. "Some of them live in other parts of the country but schedule their vacation time around the festival so they can help out."
