Behind the Scenes: "The Italian Job"
Star-studded cast makes a run for the money with Mini Coopers
By Brandy Schaffels Motor Trend, May 2003 In the upcoming remake of the classic film, "The Italian Job" opening May 30, the beloved Mini Cooper stars as an accomplice in a multi-million dollar gold heist that's not so much about getting the money as it is about getting even. advertisement The nimble hot hatch plays among an all-star cast that includes Mark Wahlberg as mastermind thief Charlie Croker; Charlize Theron as Stella, the beautiful nerves-of-steel safecracker; Seth Green as computer genius Lyle; Jason Statham as Handsome Rob, the wheelman; and Edward Norton as Steve, the not-so-creative inside guy. A team of Minis take on the role of armored cars/getaway vehicles; while the little cars might not seem the most obvious choice for carting off 1800 pounds of gold, these thieves saw them as the perfect escape cars, especially when plans lead to tapping into Los Angeles' traffic control system, manipulating signals, and creating one of the biggest traffic jams in L.A. history.

Behind The Scenes Long before rehearsals start, the Stage Manager appointed for the particular show meets the producer to discuss his/her ideas. Some staging can be done in a very simple manner - 'Chicago' at the Brentwood Theatre, for example, used scaffold poles and a few benches, relying on lighting for the main effects - whereas major musicals at the Queen’s Theatre have before now needed an articulated lorry-load of scenery to be delivered. Budgets are discussed and set once the main ideas are in place, and have to be applied rigidly to all aspects of the production; this often involves a re-think of ideas to reduce costs whilst never compromising on the quality of the show. The Stage Manager then designs scaled plans to fit the theatre, and co-ordinates the building of scenery where this has been decided upon. These plans are then used for rehearsals, so that the cast become accustomed to entry and exit points, changes in levels, positions of scenery, balconies, tables and as far as possible the amount of space available. Just before rehearsals start, a Production Meeting takes place involving Stage Crew, Producer, Musical Director, Electrics, Sound, Props (hand-held properties) and Wardrobe to discuss the requirements for each department. Those involved backstage, in Electrics, Sound and Props attend many of the rehearsals to learn the show, work out the sequence of scene changes, lighting and identify problem areas until finally the technical crew arrive at the theatre the weekend prior to a week’s run or very early in the morning for a one-day concert. In the case of ‘The Magnificent 7’, our 1999 concert, the entire stage was built by BOS members in an otherwise totally empty sports hall only to be dismantled again after the two shows.

ylea was a crazy place. A lot of interesting things happened in the season ending, three-episode arc back in May of 2001, the most important being the introduction of an odd girl dressed in a burlap sack. Labeling her as insane seemed logical at the time; considering how she lured a wild beast-like Angel back to her cave dwelling with a blood soaked hand. And then there was her peculiar, barely coherent, rapid fire speech. Yes, that was the introduction of Winifred Burkle, the brainy beauty Angel fans would come to love and respect as one of the gang. Amy Acker , the woman behind the character, does share a few of Fred’s characteristics, namely her charm and carefree laughter. Having made her mark on Angel for two full seasons now, she has undoubtedly established her talent and presence. Recently, CoA got the opportunity to chat it up with Amy on a relaxing Thursday morning and become the happy victim of that wonderfully infectious giggle.

The vampire Penn came across very much like an actual serial killer; he had issues with his past, would covet his work, and had no regrets. However nothing, not even playing Penn, could prepare Jeremy for his role as Jeffrey Dahmer in David Jacobson's independent film, "A Mind is a Place of Its Own." He noted that playing Dahmer was, "a whole other ball game. Comparatively, Penn is much more aggressive and charming. Dahmer is much more passive and docile and flaccid and did much crueler and nasty things. I don't think it helped at all but maybe it was an easier transition from that than like playing some stoner in "Senior Trip". It's a little closer but I don't think it really helped me any. Just being twisted in the head has really helped me because I'm a twisted bastard," he remarked slyly. Jeremy as Jeffrey Dahmer in " A Mind is a Place of Its Own " "Just being twisted in the head has really helped me because I'm a twisted bastard" "A Mind is a Place of Its Own" is in the final editing stages and will hopefully be appearing at film festivals very soon. All Jeremy could say about the post-production was that, "I know there is a lot of good things happening with it but I can't say too much about it right now because it's like bidding wars and all that kind of stuff. But I know good stuff should happen with it."

Birthing the Baby - A behind-the-scenes look at the making of the new musical BABY CASE Philadelphia City Paper: June 29, 2000
By Steve Cohen Monday, June 12. On this hot and humid morning 17 singer-actors gather around a long table in the cavernous, third-floor rehearsal studio at the Arden Theatre Company. They are assembling for a workshop - a private tryout - of a new musical, Baby Case, about the media hype that surrounded the trial of Bruno Hauptmann for the kidnap and murder of the Lindbergh baby in 1932. Most are in T-shirts, shorts and sandals. There are two noticeable exceptions. Vince DiMura wears a long-sleeve purple shirt, psychedelic vest, black pants and shoes, his long, dark brown hair pulled into a braid. "You can always tell the musician," says Terrence Nolen, producing artistic director of the Arden. Nolen himself looks more yuppie than theater, with his buttoned, long-sleeved striped shirt hanging loose over khaki pants.

March 31, 2004 Industry professionals recently learned the strategies and secrets behind one of the hottest television series filmed in New York.
On March 11, directors of HBO's Emmy award-winning series The Sopranos discussed the show's widespread appeal and critical acclaim, in an event sponsored by the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting (MOFTB) and the Director's Guild of America (DGA).
During the discussion, directors credited strong characters, a sense of mystery and superior writing for the show's success.
“The show is intensely character driven, not plot driven,” Director John Patterson said. “It weaves a complicated web between the characters' fears, hopes, and paranoias, with lots of layers.”
They said The Sopranos focuses on storytelling, with subtle directing. “One of the main things that's different about this show is it is one thirteen hour movie that you see a part of each week,” Actor/ Director Peter Bogdanovich said. “It's not thirteen different episodes. It's all connected, somehow.”
Director Henry Bronchtein spoke about “that mood, that mystery” that defines the show. “That's a character,” he said.

It's hard to look at the list of events for this weekend's Behind the Scenes festival, presented by the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia (TAGP), and not let out a "wow." Each company is presenting a different activity, most relating in some way to the company's current production. You can check out the set and lighting schemes for the Wilma's Indian Ink or take a Japanese Noh workshop with Greg Giovanni, who's currently directing Azuka Theatre Collective's Friends . You can tawk with the folks at Philadelphia Theatre Co. and see an excerpt from their upcoming show Barbra's Wedding . (It'll be like buttah, I'm sure.) Newsworld used five cameras in the Theatre for the ceremony, including one remote controlled version mounted on a boom that swung remarkably close to the heads of some audience members
After the ceremony, Mr. Mandela and Ms Machel met the artists who performed for them. All performers, that is, except signer Molly Johnson, who had to take her one-year-old son, Henry, home for a nap
"I like your moves," Mr. Mandela said to one of The Nylons
Raffi was supposed to debut the song he wrote for Nelson Mandela, Turn This World Around, at the UN Special Session on Children, but the conference was cancelled because of Sept. 11
Security personnel from South Africa and the RCMP were in attendance but remained in the background for the most part. More than a dozen plainclothes RCMP were seated in the Theatre, another six or eight were backstage
United Press International's Washington bureau made Ryerson photographer Dario Ruberto's pictures of the event available to their member papers across the U.S. Prior to coming to Toronto Nelson Mandela met U.S. President George Bush and went to ground zero in New York City

The Talent Behind The Talent
Behind the scenes at The Rocky Horror Show
by Darrell Hookey, Whitehorse, Yukon Territory Mary Sloan sits in a chair, facing a wall just one metre away. It's a glorious Sunday afternoon in late June. In a rehearsal room on the second floor of The Guild Hall, overlooking a graveyard of props from the recently played out Dads In Bondage, Sloan is staring at a list of characters taped to the wall. It is audition day for The Rocky Horror Show. Her body language screams out against the mental gymnastics necessary to either break hearts or break the play. "I hate this part," she flatly declares. "I hate calling someone to tell them they don't have the part they wanted." As the director, this unpleasant job belongs to her alone. It's just one price to pay to have the only "glamorous" behind-the-scenes job on a play. It will be her vision that will be seen by Whitehorse audiences beginning Oct. 19. And it is her pleasure to present one of the great "moments" in live theatre as Frank 'N' Furter makes his entrance, an entrance that made an impact on her 23 years ago when she first saw the play in London, England. As a veteran performer and director in Whitehorse, she has been drawn to plays "from the absurd to the more absurd". From Annie to Hamlet to, well, The Rocky Horror Show.
