Behind The Scenes THE WANG THEATRE
  • Did you know that The Wang Center for the Performing Arts is a not-for-profit organization and receives no city or federal funding? The Wang Theatre is a National Historic Landmark built in 1925. The Wang Center will host over 450 performances at The Wang and Shubert Theatres this year and expect over 1 million patrons to pass through our doors. Did you know there are over a thousand light bulbs in The Wang Theatre's Grand Lobby chandeliers? Did you know when the Theatre first opened in 1925 that musicians performed in the Grand Lobby, paintings by area artists hung on the walls, ping pong and billiards where set up in the Lower Lobby to amuse people while waiting to be seated? The initial developer of The Metropolitan was Max Shoolman and the cost was over $8 million. Originally the Theatre was going to be named The Capital Theatre, and attached to a hotel. Soon after construction the hotel became an office building and the theatre renamed The Metropolitan. The Wang Center employs over 1000 people.

Opera theatre gives a behind the scenes of radio
By Sara Porter Published: Monday, April 15, 2002 On April 11-13 UM-St. Louis Opera Workshop presented ‘1940’s Radio Hour’ in the University Conference Center. Before TV, radio served as the main form of entertainment. Besides playing music, it also presented shows such as "Abbot and Costello," "The Shadow" and "Mystery Theatre." Avid listeners no doubt wonder what happened behind the scenes while their favorite shows were being aired. Opera Theatre Workshop presents a hilarious, nostalgic, sweet show that presents an answer to that by gone question with the musical, "The 1940's Radio Hour." "Radio Hour" takes place during a Dec. 21, 1942, broadcast of the fictional "Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade." With the exceptions of a brief introduction and denouement the show is in effect the radio show. Songs are performed to an audience that serves as the studio audience (complete with an "applause" sign), while in the background the characters fight, have professional disagreements, get drunk and worry about the onset of WWII. "Radio Hour" is an unusual story since there are multiple subplots, but they aren't really displayed making the show the most important thing to see. This is a great play to watch the characters in the background as well as in the foreground, because this is where the true personalities lie. It's a little confusing at first if you, as I am, are used to the "soap opera" mentality of most ensemble pieces, where everyone gets their stories told loud and clear (the couple on the verge of divorce, the temptress). But Milton Zoth's direction makes perfect sense in showing a group of entertainers who must leave their personal lives at the door and always be "on" even when the microphone isn't pointed at them.

Behind the Scenes
This So-Called Disaster
Director: Michael Almereyda
Starring: Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Sam Shepard
Running Time: 90 min By Mark Labowskie
Columbia Daily Spectator April 23, 2004
Movies about the creative process are often exercises in futility: how do you capture something so intangible on screen? The most amazing thing about Michael Almereyda's fascinating new documentary, This So-Called Disaster , is that it makes an intimate human drama out of what could have been inchoate and mystical. The film follows the rehearsal process of a Sam Shepard play, The Late Henry Moss , in 2000 at San Francisco's Magic Theatre. It's the world premiere production, directed by Shepard and featuring a star-heavy cast. Sean Penn and Nick Nolte play a pair of feuding brothers reuniting after the death of their father, while Woody Harrelson and Cheech Marin have supporting comic roles. With so many seething artistic temperamentsnot to mention egosthrown together in one small regional theatre, you'd think that the film would be an account of backstage squabbling and infighting. Going into rehearsals, the situation seems loaded. It's established that this is Shepard's most personal play, the one that delves most nakedly into his own tormented relationship with his father. Nolte, looking grizzled and worn out, has just come back from his mother's deathbed. And Penn, though nursing no obvious psychological wounds, seems perpetually wired and edgy, ready to cuff the first person who questions his acting technique.

ETSU Division of Theatre offers hands-on experience behind the scenes
August 17, 2001
JOHNSON CITY – When the lights go down and the curtains open to reveal an upcoming performance, few in the audience realize what it takes to bring those intimate details to the stage, but the East Tennessee State University Division of Theatre knows it well. Everything from costumes and backdrops to props, lighting and sound are carefully prepared by a behind-the-scenes team before and during showtime. At ETSU, this team is made up of theatre instructors, their students and volunteers. “We try as much as possible to make sure students are running the show,” said Melissa Shafer, an assistant professor of communication who serves as Division of Theatre technical director and director of design. “We are there to troubleshoot in case there's a problem the students can't solve.” Students are largely responsible for everything from scene construction to make-up application, not to mention acting. Part of those responsibilities involve designing a set. An arduous process, set creation begins with a working drawing of how the set will look. From there, students literally build their way to the finished scene. After finalizing an outline and transferring it to a more permanent, wooden surface, students saw, sand, paint and hammer under Shafer's supervision. “Our shop is remote from the theatre, so finished work often has to be done on the set for everything to fit the stage and be easily taken down for storage,” said Shafer. The shop is located in the basement of Brooks Gym, and performances are held in Bud Frank Theatre in Gilbreath Hall on the main ETSU campus, as well as in the historic Memorial Theatre on the grounds of the adjacent Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home.

Behind the scenes of 'The Watched' original production Winter / Spring 2000
Charlotte Cridlan, gluing the hessian covering used on the marsh sections of the stage.
Sam Wilton burns the stage rostra tops to achieve the dark aged look of the set. Charlotte and Sam built the majority of the production's stage between them, with help being provided by the rest of the company during the evenings after rehearsals. During fine days, the entire set was transported outside and worked on in the sun. This was a rare luxury as the majority of February 2000 in Cornwall was wet and windy, which caused Charlotte and Sam many problems with both glueing and varnishing.
To achieve a darkened look to the hessian covering of the marsh sections of the stage, this too was burned.
Charlotte contemplates the merits of waxed canvas as a cover for the cart! The Rehearsals Rehearsals for 'The Watched' were held at Truro Town Hall (a disused magistrate's court belonging to Truro City Council) from 9.30 am to 5.00 pm on weekdays between 14th February and 14th March.
