Our Town
  • When Our Town was made into a film in 1940, the studio, United Artists, requested that the ending be changed and Emily be allowed to live. Thornton Wilder agreed to the change.
  • Paul Newman's first appearance in Our Town was in 1955, when he starred as George in a musical version for television, along with Eva Marie Saint as Emily and Frank Sinatra as the Stage Manager (warbling the song "Love and Marriage," later the theme song for the Married with Children television series).
  • Eric Stoltz starred as George in the 1989 version, produced at Lincoln Center, with Spalding Gray as the Stage Manager and Penelope Ann Miller as Emily. Helen Hunt appeared as Emily after Penelope Ann Miller left the production.
  • At the Williamstown (Massachusetts) Theatre Festival in 1976, Geraldine Fitzgerald became the first woman to play the Stage Manager.
  • The first time Williamstown presented the play, Thornton Wilder played the Stage Manager. He said that learning the lines he had written was one of the hardest things he'd ever had to do.
  • Thornton Wilder was a good friend of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. You can read their correspondence in

Behind the scenes - 75 years of Questors Theatre
THEATRE lovers are being given the chance to look behind the scenes at the famous Questors Theatre in Ealing, as a part of an exhibition celebrating 75 years of the well loved local resource. Questors was formed in 1929 and performed in venues in Hanwell and Acton until 1933, when the club found permanent premises, an old iron church in Mattock Lane. This was demolished in 1963 to make way for a brand new purpose built theatre, which has since been extended so that there are now two stages, the Playhouse and the Studio. Questors is now the largest amateur theatre club in Europe. Over the years, many high profile theatre professionals have been associated with Questors. Home-grown talents include Oliver Ford-Davies (who recently appeared with Nicole Kidman in The Blue Room), pioneer lighting designer Frederick Bentham and writer Peter Whelan. Dame Judi Dench is the current patron and other associates have included Amanda Redman and the late Sir Michael Redgrave. Questors has always been a breeding ground for new talent, in acting, designing and writing. The famous Tom Stoppard play, Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead' began life as a one-act play at a Questors New Plays reading.

Many people when they watch a show don't appreciate the amount of work involved in bringing a presentation to the stage. The months of planning, rehearsals and effort from the cast and production team who give up their time for your entertainment.
What even fewer people notice are the numerous volunteers who make sure that the theatre is ready for each show and that it runs smoothly. From the moment you enter the Concordia Theatre they are there, showing you to your seats, pouring your drinks, working the stage. These people spend much of their free time devoted to all aspects of the theatre to make sure that when you visit you don't notice them.

Behind the scenes at the Ancon Theatre
So you think theater is just a matter of artists going onstage and acting like themselves?
photos by Eric Jackson
Perhaps you have heard of "The Method," and thus know that a very common way of acting is to summon up emotions and experiences and play the role as if living them. But first of all, you'd be wrong to think that this is all there is to acting, and even you would be even more mistaken to believe that acting is all there is to a theatrical production.
Let me demonstrate, with photos taken with a cheapie throw-away camera on the opening night of the Theatre Guild of Ancon's production of "Boeing, Boeing."
Above we have Hillary Hughes, left, and Joanna De Ycaza, right, putting on makeup in one of the theater's little dressing rooms. Of course, on Broadway and in Hollywood they have professionals to do this for the actors. But this is a small-time institution of Panama's English-speaking community, so actresses like Hughes and De Ycaza have to do their own. (If you have a talent for makeup, you may want to volunteer to use it for Guild productions.)
Someone needs to mind the box office. For many years Gale Celluci was the chief organizer of the Theatre Guild, but she has passd on that torch and gone on to other projects. But still, she finds time to help out.

... The 10 Best Showbiz Movies
Read Advice Write an essay on this topic. Behind-the-Scenes: Film, Theatre, and Television
Aug 23 '03
The Bottom Line Often fascinating, backstage films run the gamut from muscial to melodrama, farce to weeper. Tbey have existed as long as the pictures have themselves.
The movies enjoy telling stories about themselves, the theatre world, and the land of television. Some of the most memorable Hollywood flicks have been about the backstage workings of these professions. Here are the ten best:
ALL ABOUT EVE-Bette Davis is stage star Margo Channing and Anne Baxter is the cutthroat Eve Harrington who will do anything to steal the spotlight from her in this classic flick.
THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL-Movie star Georgia Lorrison, talented director Fred Amiel, and screenwriter J. L. Bartlow reminsice on the effect producer Jonathan Sheilds had on their careers in this biting inside Hollywood drama.
THE GREAT ZIEGFELD-The 'true' story of theatrical impressario Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. won the 1936 Oscar for Best Picture. Its behind the scene glimpse of early Broadway is wonderful. Countless production numbers and over three-hundred showgirls, not to mention drop dead wonderful Luise Rainer as Anna Held in an Oscar-winning performance.
BOMBSHELL-Jean Harlow, in a role that is painfully close to her real life, plays a movie star whose life is controlled and manipulated by those around her. A brilliant comedy, possibly Harlow's finest hour in her short career, but poignant and sad if one looks beyond the surface.

Many people are involved in our productions and only the cast and the ushers are usually seen by the audience. On this page we would like to introduce just a few of our wonderful crew. Most of these pictures were taken during our "crazy day" - namely the Sunday before we open. After a couple of months of rehearsal and preparations at various offsite locations, this is the day that we are first able to enter the theatre and it all comes together. On this one day we erect and trim the set, arrange lighting and sound, finalize costumes and set dressing and, hopefully, have time for a run-through on stage. It's quite an exercise in teamwork!
