CrossSearch FEATURE Recovering Reverence by Juniata Wible I grew up in a little country church in Mississippi where all of the services were intergenerational. Occasionally one could hear a toddler's bottle klunk-klunking down the slanted floor as it rolled toward the front of the church with the baby crawling after it! We were one of the few "inter species" churches as well! One family's dog tagged along as they walked to church and then waited for them in the church's foyer. Every time a certain soprano sang a solo, that dog howled along from the back of the church. I enjoyed singing hymns loudly from memory until the time I was able to read the words from the hymnal. We often had covered dish dinners complete with homemade ice cream. I have many fond memories of that church. The best memory is it was there, at the age of 5, I asked Jesus into my heart... not in children's church (we didn't have one), but because the Lord spoke to my five-year-old heart through the sermon on a Sunday night.

Schools teach Thanksgiving spirit without religious aspects
    MICHAEL BARBER
    Herald Staff Writer

Manatee County's public schools celebrate the spirit and history of Thanksgiving but avoid any religious connection with the holiday. "We stay away from the religious aspect basically because there is the separation of church and state," said Roger Dearing, superintendent of Manatee County schools. "What we try to teach kids is that you do need to take time to reflect on those things you need to be thankful for." Dearing said that Thanksgiving doesn't have to carry a religious connotation. "You can be thankful for blessings you have without necessarily saying, 'Thanks be to God,' " Dearing said. "I'm a religious person, but I think the process is teaching people the humility and humbleness of being thankful for the blessings you do have, however you came across them."

How to Teach Children the Meaning of Thanksgiving
Many countries throughout the world have a harvest festival of some kind. In North America, Thanksgiving is the most common autumn celebration, but what does it really mean, and how should you explain it to your children? Steps: Explain the ancient origins of the harvest festival to your children. In ancient times, people of many cultures (including the ancient Greeks, Romans, Hebrews, Egyptians and Chinese) gave thanks to their god or gods for a successful harvest, and some of the traditions associated with modern Thanksgiving celebrations have their roots in these ancient festivals. Discuss the roots of the American Thanksgiving celebration. In 1621, near the end of the Plymouth colony's first year in America, the settlers gave thanks for a plentiful first harvest. The pilgrims and the natives celebrated together (they had arranged a peace treaty), and everyone feasted on geese, ducks, deer, corn, oysters, fish and berries. Discuss Native American issues surrounding Thanksgiving. Despite the harmonious relations that may have existed between natives and pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving feast, many subsequent American Thanksgivings involved settlers giving thanks for victories over the natives. Ask your children how they feel about this, and discuss the recent efforts that have been made by the American government and people to apologize for past discrimination and violence.

By Dr. Jean Spaulding Thanksgiving is a good time to talk with your children about the first Thanksgiving and the pilgrims. Eyewitness News parenting expert Dr. Jean Spaulding talks about the meaning of Thanksgiving and how to teach your children the values that are synonymous with the holiday. The nature of the celebration makes Thanksgiving the perfect time to teach your children about gratitude and thankfulness. You can begin with a discussion about the first Thanksgiving and the pilgrims. Talk about their long journey from England, the hard winter they survived and the Indians who shared the feast and taught them about the new world.

    Reading to Infants and Children
Read to your child. Read to your baby! This is the advice I give to any caring, loving adult in any baby's or child's life. I am often confounded with the reaction I receive from this advice. I usually hear this, " No, really, what can we do to help our child?" Again, I say, "read aloud." Start this practice after the child's birth. There are even those who believe that it's never too early to start and encourage reading aloud while the baby is still in the womb. This may be a little over the top for some, but the thought of reading aloud to your child weeks after birth shouldn't be. Think of it! Studies have shown that the stimulation provided by reading aloud to babies helps build permanent brain mass. Recent brain research has made positive indications that reading to babies promotes emotional and social development in addition to boosting vocabulary and later educational success since brain circuitry is being formed. It makes sense. Begin! No excuses! This is a suggestion that can be implemented by families of any income level and literacy skills. So your baby is five years old or seven years old and not measured in months anymore. It truly is never too late or early.

This mini-book is quite simple with images that should appeal to young children and simple words that children in PreK thru Kindergarten should be able to read themselves (in context with the pictures). Feel free to make as many copies as you need (just don't sell them as they're meant to be free for all to use. *grin*). There are lots of crafts, coloring pages and other printables in the Thanksgiving section to compliment this book.

Fold each page along the center dotted line so the images are on the OUTSIDE and the blank sides of the paper are on the inside (imagine you're making a greeting card).

    Teach gratitude through Thanksgiving books
    BY FRAN HAWK
    Books for Children
Belief in entitlement is the cultural kudzu of our generation. From benign, perhaps legitimate beginnings, it's spreading over traditional mores and suffocating them. Gratitude is so close to being eradicated that it should be added to the endangered species list. From my observations in schools, entitlement and ingratitude are endemic regardless of socioeconomic status. The prevailing attitude is often, "Why should I be grateful? I'm entitled." "Why should I say 'thank you' to people who're just doing their job?" "I deserve brand-name clothing and everything must be new." I used to think that this entitlement attitude so rampant among children could be addressed by sending them off for a stint in a Third World country. For some kids, even a mission trip to Haiti makes no impression. One girl came back complaining that she couldn't plug in her hair dryer. Even though we may not have the resources to eradicate entitlement kudzu from the entire countryside, we can hack away at the incursions on our own turf. Thanksgiving is a perfect time and place to start conversations about gratitude. Books can help.

I gave him 6 blank pieces of paper and told him to draw a different picture on each one. When he was finished, I asked him what each picture was. Then I put together the pictures and wrote a story based on them. Arien REALLY loves his book because it is about his father and he is very proud that it has all of his drawing in it. I enjoyed trying to tie all of the pictures into one story (and the free time I got while he was drawing)."

    The Pilgrims of Plymouth
Email this page to a friend with a personal message The Pilgrims were Separatists who broke away from the Church of England to continue the work of the Reformation. One of the English Separatist congregations emigrated to Amsterdam in 1608 to escape religious persecution. The next year they moved to Leiden, where, enjoying full religious freedom, they remained for almost twelve years. Discouraged by economic conditions in 1617, the congregation voted to emigrate to America. A small ship, the Speedwell, carried them to Southampton, England, where they joined another group of Separatists and were to pick up a second ship. After some delays and disputes, the voyagers regrouped at Plymouth, England aboard the Mayflower.
