Magazine apologizes to Thailand
Journalists Rodney Tasker (left) and Shawn Crispin BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) The Far Eastern Economic Review magazine has apologized to Thailand for an article that provoked police to order the expulsion of two of its reporters. The apology is expected to help end a dispute that had seen Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's government sharply criticized at home and abroad for attempting to curtail press freedom in one of Asia's most liberal democracies. A lawyer for the Hong Kong-based magazine delivered a letter addressed to National Assembly president Uthai Pimchaichon apologizing for any offense caused by an article, which alleged tension between King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Thaksin. "It was never the intention of the Far Eastern Economic Review to write or generate any adverse commentary concerning Thailand's highest institution and if our issue of January 10 has been so interpreted, we most sincerely apologize for it," said the letter.

Cambodians storm Thai embassy

BANGKOK, Thailand Described as the "first step to normalizing bilateral ties," Thailand will send a delegation to Cambodia to assess the damage caused by recent anti-Thai riots that devastated relations between the two countries. The officials are set to leave Bangkok on Tuesday and will inspect the destruction caused by rioting mobs that stormed and torched the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, on Wednesday. The rioters also torched or vandalized hotels and other Thai-owned business. The rampage forced Thailand to evacuate more than 700 citizens by military plane and plunged Cambodia into a diplomatic crisis with Thailand, with Bangkok closing its border with its eastern neighbor, downgrading ties and suspending economic cooperation. Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has criticized his Cambodian counterpart for not doing enough to control the riots.

16 November 2002 Dear Friends and Family,
You've heard stories about how bad traffic can be is this big city, and there's plenty of truth to them. Early Sunday mornings are relatively quiet, however, and that's our chosen time to head for the countryside. We'll be going north a bit, then mostly east, passing close to the Cambodian border. We plan to stop and see some old Khmer temples along the way. Nearly two decades have passed since my last bicycle ride in Thailand or SE Asia, when I rode old Bessie from Malaysia to Bangkok in 1983. All the cycling since has been in the American Southwest, South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. So I'm overdue for another ride here. Lonely Planet recently came out with a new guide on cycling in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia; I'll be taking a copy along. All the Best,

Images Video Audio/MP3 Introduction Coming Soon: A section on the Thai language will be added in the near future. If you would like to learn Thai there's good news and there's bad news. The good news is there's very little grammar - no irregular verbs, no tenses. The bad news is its a tone language and the writing system is like hyroglyphics. Features: B elieve it or not you can live in Thailand for 20 years on a tourist visa. Don't believe it? Read the Visas section. Think you can adjust to the Thai way of life? Well, if you're in a hurry to get things done, Thailand is not the place for you. In Spain they're famous for saying - oh we can do it tommorrow. In Thailand, its more like next week, or maybe next year, or - oh what the heck, let's have a party instead. Try the Culture Shock section to see if Thailand fits in with your lifestyle. And what about the price of beer? Read Food and Drink. Looking for a wife? Read the Love and Romance feature.

Why Thailand?
Thailand remains one of the easiest and most comfortable locations in Asia for manufacturing and other investment. Banking reform and efforts to privatize more government functions by the current government should lead to more competition and even more supportive treatment of new investment projects.
