The Thais, most historians believe, began migrating from southern China in the early part of the Christian era. At first they formed a number of city-states in the northern part of what is present-day Thailand, in places like Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, but these were never strong enough to exert much influence outside the immediate region. Gradually the Thais migrated further south to the broad and fertile central plains, and expanded their dominance over nearly the entire Indochina Peninsula. Contradictory as it may seem, however, recent archaeological discoveries around the northeast hamlet of Ban Chiang suggest that the world’s oldest Bronze Age civilization was flourishing in Thailand some 5,000 years ago.
Sukhothai Period(1238-1438)
Sukhothai was the first Thai kingdom. It was founded in 1238 by two Thai governors, Khun Bang Klang Thao (Sri Inthrathit) and Khun Pha Muang who rebelled against the Khmers; and gave independence to the region. Sukhothai period was the most flourishing period of Thailand. It gained independence in 1238 and quickly expanded its boundary of influence. Sukhothai period was considered to be a golden age of Thai culture.

Thailand was known for centuries as Siam and is the only country in Southeast Asia that was never colonized. It has been a constitutional monarchy ever since 1932 and has a parliamentarian form of government. Before 1932, Thailand's history can be divided into three kingdoms. Under the Sukhothai Kingdom ( , the King had absolute power over his subjects and paid close attention to their well-being, this was known as the paternalistic system of government. Following the Sukhothai Kingdom was the Ayutthaya Kingdom, which inherited extensive Khmer traditions and customs. Their system of government was based on the concept of divine rights. During this period, a clear division was seen between the civil and military administration and a strong centralized government. In 1767, with the establishment of the Rattanakosin Kingdom, the Ayutthaya system of government was adapted. During the late 19th century, the basis of the present system was formed by King Rama V when he carried out a a major reorganization of the central regional and local administrations. Back to Top...

History of Thai Massage The instinctive act to touch, rub, or knead different parts of the body when there is pain or discomfort can probably be traced back to the beginning of human evolution. Many different kinds of mammals will rub themselves with their paws or lick wounds that hurt them.
With our superior intelligence, we learned to memorize, differentiate, and systematize our ways of touching and their effects on the body.
Hence, various systems of massage developed.
The earliest historical records of massage appear to be from China over 5,000 years ago during the reign of the Yellow Emperor, Huang Ti. Recommendations for massage as a means of helping the body to heal itself also appeared in the Indian book of Ayur Veda around 1,800 B.C. There are also numerous references to the benefits and uses of massage in the medical literature of many other cultures around the world. Even in the Bible there are many references to the "Laying-on-of-hands" as a method of curing sickness.
Until recently, not only in the west but in Thailand also, the popularity of massage has been marred by the general population's puritanical attitude towards the body. Massage is now once more regarded as a legitimate method of health care because of the surge of interest in the many alternative approaches to conventional medicine, particularly in the types of body-oriented therapy.

  • Thailand means "land of the free" , and throughout its 800-year history, Thailand can boast the distinction of being the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized. Its history is divided into five major periods Nanchao Period (650-1250 A.D.) The Thai people founded their kingdom in the southern part of China, which is Yunnan, Kwangsi and Canton today. A great number of people migrated south as far as the Chao Phraya Basin and settled down over the Central Plain under the sovereignty of the Khmer Empire, whose culture they probably accepted. The Thai people founded their independent state of Sukhothai around 1238 A.D., which marks the beginning of the Sukhothai Period Sukhothai Period (1238-1378 A.D.)

    History
The earliest civilisation in Thailand is believed to have been that of the Mons in central Thailand, who brought a Buddhist culture from the Indian subcontinent. In the 12th century, this met a Khmer culture moving from the east and the maritime Srivijaya culture moving north. Around the same period citizens of the Thai state of Nan Chao, in what is now southern China, migrated south. The Thai Nation as we know it today has its origins in the federation of this main ethnic groups. Thai Princes created the first Siamese capital in Sukhothai, later centres in Chiang Mai and, notably, Ayuthaya.
Burmese invaded Siam in both the 16th and 18th centuries, capturing Chiang Mai and destroying Ayuthaya.Thais expelled Burmese and moved their capital to Thonburi. In 1782, the current Chakri dynasty was founded by King Rama I and the capital was moved across the river to Bangkok.
In the 19th century, Siam remained independent by playing off one European power against another. In 1932, a peaceful coup converted the country into a constitutional monarchy, and in 1939 Siam became Thailand. During WW II, the Thai government allowed Japanese troops to occupy Thailand. After the war, Thailand was dominated by the military and experienced more than twenty coups and countercoups interspersed with short-lived experiments with democracy. Democratic elections in 1979 were followed by a long period of stability and prosperity as power shifted from the military to the business elite.

    Golden Thailand
In English, Thailand means land of the free. Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia to have not been colonized. This page will take you through the different eras or periods that Thailand has transitioned through.
Thailand has an 800 year period of history. Within this history, it has been the only Southeast Asian nation never colonized by a foreign power. Their are five periods in which this history can be divided.
Nanchao (650 to 1250) The people of Thailand founded a kingdom in southern China. This is, at the present Yunnan, Kwangsi and Canton. People migrated to as far as the Chao Phraya Basin. The people would settle here under the Khmer Empire’s sovereignty. The independent state of Sukhothai was founded around 1238 A.D. This gives birth to the period of Sukhothai.
Sukhothai (1238 to 1378) Thai people begin to become a dominant force in this region in the 13th century. Eventually, the Thais begin asserting independence from the then present Khmer and Mon kingdoms. This is called “the dawn of hapiness” or thought of as the golden era of Thailand’s long history. In 1350 the state of Ayutthaya placed its influence over the state of Sukhothai.
Ayutthaya (1350 to 1767) Khmer culture was adopted by Ayutthaya kings, such as Ayutthaya culture was placed over Sukhothai. Ayutthaya sovereign rulers were not the same type as Sukhothai’s paternal and accessible. Ayutthaya’s sovereigns were absolute monarchists that took the title of devaraja or god king. The earlier part of Ayutthaya, extension was made by placing its sovereignty over neigboring Thai principalities which led it into conflict with its neighbors. During the 17th century, Siam started to gain diplomatic and commercial relations with the west. In 1767 an invasion by Burmese was a success, the result was the capture of Ayutthaya. Despite this victory, the Burmese did not have control for long. A young general named Phya Taksin and his followers broke through the Burmese encirclement and escaped to Chantaburi. Seven months after the fall of Ayutthaya, he and his forces sailed back to the capital and expelled the Burmese occupation garrison.

    A brief history
    Peter Benenson
(Real Video Clip) In 1961, London lawyer Peter Benenson read about a group of students in Portugal who were arrested and jailed for raising a toast to "freedom" in a public restaurant. This incident prompted him to launch a one-year campaign called " Appeal for Amnesty 1961 " in the London Observer, a local newspaper. The "Appeal for Amnesty" called for the release of all people imprisoned because of peaceful expression of their beliefs, politics, race, religion, color, or national origin. Benenson called these people, "prisoners of conscience." His plan was to encourage people to write letters to government officials in countries which had prisoners of conscience, calling for their release. The campaign grew enormously, spread to other countries, and by the end of 1961 the organization, Amnesty International, had been formed. Amnesty was founded on the principle that people have fundamental rights that transcend national, cultural, religious, and ideological boundaries. It worked to obtain prompt and fair trials for all prisoners, to end torture and executions, and to secure the release of prisoners of conscience. (Prisoners of conscience, as Amnesty International defines them, are people imprisoned solely because of their political or religious beliefs, gender, or their racial or ethnic origin, who have neither used nor advocated violence.) In early historical times, a succession of tribal groups controlled what is now Thailand. The Mon and Khmer peoples established powerful kingdoms that included large areas of the country. They absorbed from contact with South Asian peoples religious, social, political, and cultural ideas and institutions that later influenced the development of Thailand's culture and national identity. The Tai, a people who originally lived in southwestern China, migrated into mainland Southeast Asia over a period of many centuries. The first mention of their existence in the region is a twelfth-century A.D. inscription at the Khmer temple complex of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which refers to syam , or "dark brown" people (the origin of the term

    Something "Different"
Crazy Ride On a Local Bus
Getting there from by road is not easy the local bus we boarded from Hat Yai to Nakhon Si Thammarat is an excellent experience in "rough travel" imagine getting squashed three person to a seat meant for two, with people standing for the entire four-hour ride, some hanging onto the bus doors for their dear lives. Now I can understand why the bus drive prayed for so long at the small shrine placed on the dashboard before the trip! He really needed divine interference to ensure the safety of all the passengers and himself. But after that four-hour ride, I learnt something about human kindness.
As we could not speak Thai, the conductor asked around the bus for someone who could speak English to find out where to drop us off. Then, we were dropped off right in front of the tourist office situated in the City Hall building. A slightly less adventurous way to travel from Hat Yai to Nakhon would be by shared taxis, where four passengers are squashed into the back seats of a 1960s Mercedes (with no air-condition!), and two passengers sharing the front seat. A more luxurious way is to hire an entire (air-conditioned!) taxi at around US 50 from Hat Yai to Nakhon Si Thammarat.

    HISTORY OF RICE
    GENERAL INFORMATION SOURCES

    A Brief History of Rice

    * From the publication Rice: Then and Now by R.E. Huke and E.H. Huke, International Rice Research Institute, 1990.
    Introduction
Rice is intimately involved in the culture as well as the food ways and economy of many societies. For example, folklore tells us that when the Kachins of northern Myanmar (Burma) were sent forth from the center of the Earth, they were given the seeds of rice and were directed to a wondrous country where everything was perfect and where rice grew well. Rice is an integral part of their creation myth and remains today as their leading crop and most preferred food. In Bali, it is believed that the Lord Vishnu caused the Earth to give birth to rice, and the God Indra taught the people how to raise it. In both tales, rice is considered a gift of the gods, and even today in both places, rice is treated with reverence, and its cultivation is tied to elaborate rituals.
Chinese myth, by contrast, tells of rice being a gift of animals rather than of gods. China had been visited by an especially severe period of floods. When the land had finally drained, people came down from the hills where they had taken refuge, only to discover that all the plants had been destroyed and there was little to eat. They survived through hunting, but it was very difficult, because animals were scarce. One day the people saw a dog coming across a field, and hanging on the dog's tail were bunches of long, yellow seeds. The people planted these seeds, rice grew, and hunger disappeared. Throughout China today, tradition holds that "the precious things are not pearls and jade but the five grains", of which rice is first.

In 1957, a representative of the International Youth Hostels Federation called upon Lady Dusdi Malakul, the President of the Thai Women's Volunteer Association, and asked her to start a youth hostel project in Thailand.
The association reported the matter to the Ministry of Education and had their approval to start a youth hostel project under the auspices of the Women Volunteers Association. Under this project, two youth hostels were opened on January 2, 1960; one at Cholburi and another at Nakorn Nayok. In July of 1960, the Department of Highways allowed the youth hostel project to use two buildings on a hill near the Phra Buddha-Chaya Temple at Saraburi as the 3rd youth hostel in Thailand.
On June the 7th, 1961, the Youth Hostels Association of Thailand was registered as an independent body and the Ministry of Education agreed that the Children's Sala in Sanam Suapa be used as its headquarters. The name of the association is now the "Thai Youth Hostels Association".

    Thailand and Its People
Thailand, also known as Siam, emerged in the 1200s when two Thai chieftains rebelled against the Khmer ruler and established the Thai kingdom in Sukhothai. However, it declined during the 1300s and became a vassal state of Ayutthaya. Ayutthaya became the centre of the kingdom for about 350 years. In 1767, Ayutthaya was destroyed by Burmese invaders. In 1782, King Rama I established his new capital in Bangkok. Since 1932, Thailand has had a constitutional monarchy. At present, H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the 9th King of the Chakri dynasty, who is loved and greatly respected, rules the country. Buddhism is the predominant religion, and Thai is the national language. The rich blend and ethnic diversity of Thai, Chinese, Malay, Mon, Lao and various hill tribes create the unique character of the Thai people. In 1994, the population of Thailand was about 60 millions.

The Khmer were driven to the South, and Sukhothai expanded its power by a combination of conquest and alliances by marriage with other Thai states.
