Across this landscape live Thailand's population of abo ut 60 million people. Along with the ethnic Thais, who make up around 80 percent of the population, there are significant groups of Chinese (about 10 percent), Malays (about 4 percent), Lao, Mons, Khmers, Indians and Burmese - reflecting this country's long history at the crossroads of Southeast Asia. Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia and as a gateway to Indochina. Thailandborders Lao PDR in the norht and northeast; the Union of Myanmar in the north and west; Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand in the east and Malaysia in the south. Thailand covers a land area of 513,115 square kilometres, roughly the size of France and extends about 1,620 kilometres from north to south and 775 kilometres from east to west. Geographical Regions Thailand can be split up into four distinct geographical regions: Northern Region: Mountains, forests and fertile valleys. Bordered by Myanmar and Laos, characterised by forested mountains - lower extremities of Himalayan foothills - and fertile river valleys, northern Thailand encompasses part of the fabled Golden Triangle. Diverse elements, including crisp mountain scenary, exotic hill tribes, forests worked by elephants, colourful festivals, invigorating cool season weather, ancient cities, exquisite northern Thai and Burmese-style temples, and friendly people contribute to northern Thailand's enduring charm. Overview Thailand covers an area of 514,000 square kilometres in the centre of the South-East Asian peninsula. It is bordered by Myanmar (Burma), Lao People's Democratic Republic, Cambodia and Malaysia, and has 2,420 kilometres of coast line on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman sea. Thailand stretches 1,650 kilometres from north to south, and from east to west 780 kilometres at its widest point.
For economic, social and ecological reasons, Thailand is usually classified into four geographical regions. They are: the central region (including Bangkok Metropolitan Region) comprising the basin of the Chao Phrya River which runs from north to south and after crossing Bangkok flows to the Gulf of Thailand. The central region is often called the "rice bowl" of Thailand being the most fertile area of the country. After the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, it enjoys the highest per capita income in the country.
The northern region is mountainous and was traditionally the most heavily forested area of the country. In the recent years, however, overcutting has considerably reduced its forest resources. The main centres of population are in the narrow alluvial valleys along the four north-south flowing rivers which unite in the northern central plain to form the Chao Phraya.

THAILAND GEOGRAPHY The Kingdom of Thailand, covering an area of 514,000 square kilometres, lies in the heart of Southeast Asia, roughly equidistant between India and China. It shares borders with Myanmar to the west and north, Lao P.D.R. to the north and northeast, Cambodia to the east and Malaysia to the south. CLIMATE Central Thailand, the north, northeast and east have three seasons: hot (February / March to June), rainy (June to September / October) and cool (October to January / February). Countrywide, humidity is high almost all year. Temperatures in Bangkok are mostly hot, with highs of around 35 ° C in April, dropping to roughly 30 ° C in December. This is the best time to visit, when cool breezes make sightseeing much more pleasant. The monsoon rains usually come in brief but heavy downpours - sometimes producing flash floods - followed by sunshine. The north (especially Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son) and the northeast can become chilly around New Year, with night-time lows of 11-13 ° C . Bring warm clothing. However, daytime temperatures are in the high 20s , reaching the mid-to-high 30s in April. Rainfall, although not as heavy as in Bangkok, may make trekking a challenge from July through September, but this is when the north is at its greenest. October to January is probably the most comfortable period for trekking.

Geography
Thailand is a Southeast Asian, predominantly Buddhist kingdom almost equidistant between India and China. For centuries known by outsiders as Siam, Thailand has been something of a Southeast Asian migratory, cultural and religious crossroads. Thailand has an area of 517 000 sq km, making it slightly smaller than the state of Texas in the USA, or about the size of France. Its shape on the map has been compared to the head of an elephant, with its trunk extending down the Malay peninsula. The centre of Thailand, Bangkok, is at about 14 degrees north latitude, putting it on a level with Madras, Manila, Guatemala and Khartoum. The country's longest north-south distance is about 1860km, but its shape makes distances in any other direction 1000km or less. Because the north-south reach spans roughly 16 latitudinal degrees, Thailand has perhaps the most diverse climate in South East Asia. The topography varies from high mountains in the North (the southermost extreme of a series of ranges that extend across northern Myanmar and south-west China to the south-eastern edges of the Tibet Plateau) to limestone-encrusted tropical islands in the South that are part of the Malay Archipelago.

Overview
Bangkok, capital city of Thailand, lies close to the mouth of the Chao Phraya River at the center of a fertile alluvial plain. With an area of 1,565.2 sq km, Bangkok ranks 68th in size out of the country's 76 provinces, but has the greatest population and population density of any province. It is surrounded by Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakan to the south, Nakhon Pathom to the west, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Nakhon Nayok to the north, and Chachoengsao to the east. Bangkok also has a 4.4 km stretch of coastline. Parts of the surrounding provinces have been swallowed up by Bangkok's sprawling metropolitan area. Formerly known as 'Venice of the East', Bangkok is criss-crossed by a network of natural and man-made canals called 'klongs' all of which link to the Chao Phraya. The canals were the only means of transport in former times. Today, they help drain the pancake-flat city during the rainy season.

Fossil Jaw Grows Orangutan Family Tree, Scientists Say Stefan Lovgren
for National Geographic News
January 28, 2004 Researchers believe a jawbone found in Khorat, Thailand, and dating to the Late Miocene era between seven and nine million years ago belongs to a newly discovered relative of orangutans. The jawbone from the new hominoid, named Khoratpithecus piriyai, is similar to the lower jaw, or mandible, of modern orangutans. And like today's orangutans, the ancient jawbone shows no evidence of anterior digastric muscles, the tell-tale muscles used to lower the jaw in most other primates. Read the full An orangutan mother and her one-year-old infant hurtle through the forest canopy in Gunung Palung National Park, Borneo. Researchers believe an ancient jawbone found in Thailand comes from an orangutan ancestor previously unknown to science. Scientists say clues on the fossil suggest the new hominoid species, Khoratpithecus piriyai

March 25, 2004 See a Photo Gallery of Thai Kickboxer Nong Tum Laura Greene, host of National Geographic On Assignment, Here Greene describes her time with Tum, and his transformation from a masculine boxer to a petit, pretty young woman. Tum's story is now the subject of the new movie Beautiful Boxer. I'm on my way to meet a celebrity who is a gender-bending knockout. Here in Thailand, Nong Tum is a household name. Meeting a star is a little nerve wracking at the best of times. But today I have extra reason to worry.
