Thailand Geography of Thailand Across this landscape live Thailand's population of about 60 million people. Along with the ethnic Thais, who make up around 80 percent of the population, there are significant groups of Chinese (about 10 percent), Malays (about 4 percent), Lao, Mons, Khmers, Indians and Burmese - reflecting this country's long history at the crossroads of Southeast Asia. Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia and as a gateway to Indochina. Thailandborders Lao PDR in the norht and northeast; the Union of Myanmar in the north and west; Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand in the east and Malaysia in the south. Thailand covers a land area of 513,115 square kilometres, roughly the size of France and extends about 1,620 kilometres from north to south and 775 kilometres from east to west. Geographical Regions Thailand can be split up into four distinct geographical regions: Northern Region: Mountains, forests and fertile valleys. Bordered by Myanmar and Laos, characterised by forested mountains - lower extremities of Himalayan foothills - and fertile river valleys, northern Thailand encompasses part of the fabled Golden Triangle. Diverse elements, including crisp mountain scenary, exotic hill tribes, forests worked by elephants, colourful festivals, invigorating cool season weather, ancient cities, exquisite northern Thai and Burmese-style temples, and friendly people contribute to northern Thailand's enduring charm.

Trang lies along the western coastline bordering the Indian Ocean for about 119 kilometers, consisting of an archipelago in the Andaman Sea with over 46 islands. The topography varies from the plateau region at the foot of Bantad Mounatain Range and dipping the elevation down to the flat plain at the edge of the Andaman Sea. The terrains are characterized by hillocks scattering around the region. The province is nourished by two main rivers; one is Trang River, having the provenance from the Luang Mountain Range, and the other is Palian River, coming from the Bantad Mountain Range. Trang is situated about 828 kilometers from Bangkok and occupies about 4,917 square kilometers. It is administratively divided into 9 districts (Amphoe) and one sub-district (King Amphoe), namely, Amphoe Kantang, Huay Yot, Yan Ta Khao, Palian, Sikao, Wang Wiset, Na Yong, Ratsada, and King Amphoe Hat Samran.

Situated in the heart of the Southeast Asian mainland, Thailand covers an area of 514,000 square kilometers. It is bordered by Laos to the Northeast, Myanmar to the North and West, Cambodia to the East, and Malaysia to the South.
Thailand is naturally divided into four topographic regions: 1) the North, 2) the Central Plain,or Chao Phraya River Basin, 3) the Northeast, or the Korat Plateau, and 4) the South, or Southern Isthmus. The North is a mountainous region characterized by natural forests, ridges and deep, narrow, alluvial valleys. Central Thailand, the basin of the Chao Phraya River, is a lush, fertile valley. It is the richest and most extensive rice-producing area in the country and has often been called the “Rice Bowl of Asia.” Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is located in this region. The Northeastern region, or Korat Plateau, is an arid region characterized by a rolling surface and undulating hills. Harsh climatic conditions often result in this region being subjected to floods and droughts. The Southern region is hilly to mountainous, with thick virgin forests and rich deposits of minerals and ores. This region is the center for the production of rubber and the cultivation of other tropical crops.

Thailand Hotel Guide The area between the 6th and the 20th line of latitude (see Full Map of Thailand ) that is now known as Thailand has since ancient times been the home of highly developed civilizations, long before it was "discovered" in the 16th century by Europeans (as a matter of fact, even before the Thai themselves arrived there). The earliest evidence of settlement is the Ban Chiang culture that existed in the 5th century B.C. in the Northeast of Thailand (many remains have been found in a small village near Udon Thani). The Ban Chiang people (their exact identity has not yet been determined) knew bronze, iron, ceramics, and ceremonial burials. They cultivated rice and kept domesticated animals. In the 3rd century A.D. they disappeared, for reasons still unknown today. Ancient Thailand (Mural at Wat Phra Kaew, Bangkok) 9 centuries later, from the 6th century A.D. on, the Mon culture flourished in Thailand. The Mon settled in the Menam Delta in the Central Plains and in the North (Haripunchai, now called Lamphun, was the capital of one of their most important kingdoms in the North) and brought Buddhism, Sanskrit, and many other Indian influences to Thailand. Thailand - Geography
    Size: Approximately 514,000 square kilometers.
Topography: Chief topographic features include central plain dominated by Mae Nam (river) Chao Phraya and its tributaries. To northeast rises dry, undulating Khorat Plateau bordered on east by Mekong River. Mountains along northern and western borders with Burma extend south into narrow, largely rain-forested Malay Peninsula. Network of rivers and canals associated with northern mountains and central plain drain, via Chao Phraya, into Gulf of Thailand. Mae Nam Mun and other northeastern streams drain via Mekong into South China Sea. Soils vary. Topography and drainage define four regions: North, Northeast, Center, and South. Climate: Tropical monsoon climate. Southwest monsoons arriving between May and July signal start of rainy season lasting until October. Cycle reverses with northeast monsoon in November and December, ushering in dry season. Cooler temperatures give way to extremely hot, dry weather March through May. In general, rainfall heaviest in South, lightest in Northeast.

Thailand means 'land of the free' and for over 800 years the Thai people have bragged about being the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized. Thai people originally came from Southern China to what was then Siam but when some of them didn't want to become part of the Chinese mainstream they moved to what is now Thailand. After Thailand settled down, the Sukhothai period began. Under the King's ruling the Sukhothai land was successful - there were fish in the water and rice in the fields. In 1350 a new King
