GEOGRAPHY Return to Index of Thailand Information Return to Main Page Thailand is a Southeast Asian, predominantly Buddhist kingdom almost equidistant between India and China. For centuries known by outsiders as Siam, Thailand has been something of a Southeast Asian migratory, cultural and religious crossroads. Thailand has an area of 517 000 sq km, making it slightly smaller than the state of Texas in the USA, or about the size of France. Its shape on the map has been compared to the head of an elephant, with its trunk extending down the Malay peninsula. The centre of Thailand, Bangkok, is at about 14 degrees north latitude, putting it on a level with Madras, Manila, Guatemala and Khartoum. The country's longest north-south distance is about 1860km, but its shape makes distances in any other direction 1000km or less. Because the north-south reach spans roughly 16 latitudinal degrees, Thailand has perhaps the most diverse climate in SouthEast Asia. The topography varies from high mountains in the North (the southermost extreme of a series of ranges that extend across northern Myanmar and south-west China to the south-eastern edges of the Tibet Plateau) to limestone-encrusted tropical islands in the South that are part of the Malay Archipelago.

Thailand's Geography and Culture Thailand's Physical Geography Thailand is located in Southeast Asia, and it borders Cambodia, Laos, and Burma. There are many landforms located in the country of Thailand, including the Khorat Plateau and the Indochina Peninsula. The Himalaya Mountains also occupy a portion of Thailand toward the north. This part of the country is covered with rugged forests. It also has two major rivers near the area, which are the Chao Phraya and the Meking. Thailand's Economic Geography Thailand's economy has grown greatly with the help of foreign investment, mainly from Japan, Thailand's major trade partner. The automobile, textiles, electronics, and tourism industries have increased the most of any in the past few years. Thailand is the leading country for exporting rice, and is also a primary fish exporter. Among rice and fish, Thailand exports sugarcane, corn, and rubber. Thailand's natural resources provide it with much needed revenue. These natural resources include forests for hardwoods and minerals such as: tin, tungsten, and lead. Thailand's Culture In Thailand, families are very close, and people hold respect to their elder family members. If given advice from elders, people in Thailand are expected to abide by it. A common work-week is anywhere from 35 to 48 hours a week. Rice is a common dish, often added to spicy meats or vegetables. Common sports or recreational activities in Thailand include: soccer, table tennis, badminton, and volleyball.

Geography of Thailand
Thailand has a total land area of 513,115 square kilometers. The country is bounded by Myanmar, Lao, Cambodia and Malaysia During the early 1960s, more than 50 percent of the country is covered by forest, however, in 1997 this declined to only 20 percent The country has 25 major river systems (Table 1). Over the last two decades, the watersheds of these river systems play a very
crucial role specifically in boosting agricultural production of the country. Thailand has different geological varieties in four regions. North and West are mountainous, alternating with plains along narrow valleys. Several rise to over 1,500 meters, the highest mountain in Thailand is Doi Inthanon (2,565 m. or 8,417 ft.) on the Thanon Thongchai range in the province of Chiang Mai. Central Region is a vast plain made up of Chao Phraya River basin and the tall-ends of the Ping, Wang, Yom, Nan and Pa Sak rivers, touching on the basins of the Mae Klong and Bang Pakong rivers. The Central Plain area is made up of sedimentary deposits from the Tertiary and Quaternary periods and therefore relatively late in geological term. Subsequently, the land was elevated only a little higher than mean sea level. As it has fertile soil and water, the Central Plain attracted large groups of settlers and eventually became the economic and political center of the country today.

THAILAND There is more visible historical evidence of past eras in Thailand than in any other South-East Asian country, so if you're interested in ruins, temples and deserted cities, this is the place to go. For pure holiday-making magic, Thailand's islands and beaches are working definitions of heaven (once you get out of the shadows of the evil multinational hotels). And as for urban delights, the huge metropolis of Bangkok, although it can alarm with its chaos and its scale, tends to so charm visitors with its energy and cultural treasures that the steamy soupy diesel mixture that passes for air in this city is more than forgiven.
Thailand is an easy country to travel in, with efficient transport, cheap accommodation and a delicious national cuisine. The Thais are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality to strangers. Although they're often depicted as fun-loving, happy-go-lucky folk (which they often are), they are also very strong-minded and have struggled for centuries to preserve their spirit of independence.

Thailand's 514,000 square kilometers lie in the middle of mainland Southeast Asia. The nation's axial position influenced many aspects of Thailand's society and culture. The earliest speakers of the Tai language migrated from what is now China, following rivers into northern Thailand and southward to the Mae Nam (river) Chao Phraya Valley. Boundaries
Thailand in the late 1980s shared boundaries with Burma, Malaysia, Laos, and Cambodia. Although neither China nor Vietnam bordered Thailand, the territory of both countries came within 100 kilometers of Thai territory. Many parts of Thailand's boundaries followed natural features, such as the Mekong River. Most borders had been stabilized and demarcated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in accordance with treaties forced on Thailand and its neighbors by Britain and France. In some areas, however, exact boundaries, especially along Thailand's eastern borders with Laos and Cambodia, were still in dispute in the late 1980s. Topography and Drainage

Thailand and the Thais Geography and climate Thailand covers an area of nearly 514,000 square kilometers and is bounded by other South-East Asian countries : Malaysia, Burma, Laos and Cambodia. To the west lies the Indian Ocean and to the east are the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. The climate is usually hot and humid but not unbearable and so the Westerner soon becomes used to it. Temperatures vary between 62 degrees in December and 96 degrees Fahrenheit in March, with an average humidity of 82%. The rainy season, or monsoon weather, lasts from May to early November; while during November, December and January the weather is delightfully cool. The hot months are February, March and April. Bangkok, the capital since 1782, is today one of the largest cities in South-East Asia, with a population of ten million which is increasing rapidly. The city lies within a bend of the Chao Phya River approximately 50 miles from the coast, and is only 3 feet above sea level. Surrounding the city is the vast central plain often referred to as the rice bowl of Thailand.

http://www.masterworksunlimited.com/Thailand/geograph.htm
GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT One of Asia's most rapidly developing countries, Thailand lies at the heart of southeast Asia, within the Indochinese Peninsula, except for the southern extremity, which occupies a portion of the Malay Peninsula. For size comparison, Thailand's total land area of 514,000 sq km (198,456 sq. mi.) is about 20% larger than the area of the U.S. state of California. It's bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia, and Cambodia. The country's extreme dimensions are about 1770 km (about 1100 miles) from north to south and about 805 km (about 500 miles) from east to west. The Thai people describe the shape of their land as an elephant's head, with the trunk down the Malay Peninsula and the ear in the northeast. The physiography is highly diversified, but the mountain systems are the predominant feature of the terrain. Thailand is rich in natural resources. Among the known mineral deposits are coal, gold, lead, tin, tungsten, manganese, zinc, and precious stones. In addition, the country has many large forests that produce teak for export. The rich alluvial soil along the Chao Phraya and other rivers constitutes another important resource. Jungles and swamps, scattered through the coastal areas of Thailand, have extensive stands of tropical trees, including mangrove, rattan, ironwood, sappanwood, ebony, and rosewood. The upland areas are also heavily wooded, the most valuable species being teak, agalloch, and oak. In addition, a wide variety of tropical plants and fruit trees, including orchid, gardenia, hibiscus, banana, mango, and coconut, occur in Thailand. Many species of animal inhabit the jungles and forests. Elephants, widely used as beasts of burden, are abundant. Other large quadrupeds include the rhinoceros, tiger, leopard, gaur, water buffalo, and gibbon. The Siamese cat is, as its name implies, indigenous to Thailand. Thailand has more than 50 species of snakes, including several poisonous varieties. Crocodiles are numerous, as are various species of fishes and birds.
