Geography
The topography varies and can be divided into four main regions: the fertile centre region, dominated by the Chao Phraya river network; the north-east plateau, the kingdom's poorest region (thanks to 'thin' soil plus occasional droughts and floods), rising some 300 metres above the central plain; northern Thailand, a region of mountains and fertile valleys; and the southern peninsular region, which extends to the Malaysian frontier and is predominantly rainforests. The southern region receives the most annual rainfall and the northeast the least, although the north has less general humidity. Thailand's climate is ruled by monsoons, resulting in three seasons: rainy (June to October); cool and dry (November to February); and hot (March to May). See our climate page for more information on climate. For administrative purposes, Thailand is divided into 74 changwat or provinces. Each province is subdivided into a number of amphur or districts, which are further subdivided into tambon (precincts), and

    Thailand - Geography Climate
The climate of Thailand can vary dramatically; the northern landscape rises into some impressive mountain ranges, with Doi Inthanon the country's highest peak at 2,595 metres.
Here winter temperatures can plunge to a surprising zero degrees. In general, though, Thailand has clearly defined seasons; from June to October in the north and the west of the peninsula it rains almost every day (though rarely all day), after which the air cools.
The most popular months for visitors are November to February, after which heat and humidity increases until the next rainy season. By a happy fluke of nature while it is the rainy season in the west peninsula, for example in Phuket, Koh Samui on the east is dry, and vice versa.
    The Mekong River
One of the 12 greatest rivers in the world, running 4500 km from the Tibetan Plateau (the actual source was discovered in 1995) through China to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam - where it pours out into the South China Sea.
