John's Life in Thailand
Updated May 27, 2004
Hello, and welcome to my special life in exile.  I chose this life for myself because I felt the materialistic life I led in America was not satisfying for me, and I yearned for something simpler, yet more challenging and more adventurous.  Living in Thailand became that adventure, and you can join me if you like, without even leaving the comfort of your living room.  Just read on.
What Is John's Life in Thailand, Anyway?
John's Life in Thailand is a series of short articles about my experience, thoughts, and feelings living in a foreign country.  It offers both a factual account of Thailand in the 1990s and my own personal perspective on living here.  You may see a few photos, but most of the pictures I will try to paint for you with my words.
Want a break from the routine?  John's Life in Thailand is your chance to get away from your job, your town, your life in general for a few hours, and have exotic adventure.  Only you don't have to take the risks, because I do it for you.  Think of me as your medium.  I travel for you, I see for you, I deal with customs for you, I throw up for you.  Then I write about it, and sometimes take pictures (but not of the barf).  It's all in a day's work. View my guestbook.

Country Info Thailand Introduction Thailand General Data Thailand Maps Thailand Culture ... Thailand Time and Date Thailand Culture Back to Top Neither a static nor a revolutionary society, Thailand has always been able to harness the talents of its people, make effective use of its natural environment, and progress at an evolutionary pace. The tendency of the Central Thaifor centuries the controlling group in Thai societyto eliminate or suppress ethnic or religious differences was tempered by the Chakkri Dynasty, which had, for the most part, fostered toleration since assuming the monarchy in 1782. Although Thai society appeared homogeneous, it actually represented a compromise among various groups, which, in order to preserve their own identity, accepted certain aspects of general Thai identity, or Ekkalak Thai. As in the past, in modern Thailand the basic social and communal structure was controlled by a power elite system comprising the monarchy, the military, and upper level bureaucrats. These groups had a symbiotic relationship with the economic and business community that strongly influenced decision making. As a result of modern education and international influences, however, the composition of all parts of the elite system was changing in the late 1980s. As Thailand became more active in world trade and the international community in general, the traditional practice of measuring status by the extent of landholdings became less meaningful. Although the Buddhist sangha (monastic community) and the royal family remained the largest landholders, they were no longer the richest elements in society. Their wealth was often surpassed by that of members of the business community and the bureaucracy (including the military), who derived their growing affluence from diverse sources.

City of Chiang Rai The narrative which appears on this page is edited from several letters, written over several months by David Nicolson Freidberg, SMA class of '68, the first of which was on May 19, 1997, and sent to myself among a group of other fellow Staunton Military Academy alumni. His story, which I have edited from those several letters, is published here with his permission and will hopefully be updated from time to time. It will acquaint the reader with the reality of life in northern Thailand , as best as it may be discerned by an informed "outsider." In contrast, the links which I have provided will relay the commercial, educational and travel-agency information, which will combine to trace a picture of what likely awaits the pre-planned tourist or business traveler. It has indeed been a long, strange trip from "The Hill" [shorthand for Staunton Military Academy - SMA] to the mountains and hill tribes of northern Thailand. My move here, two years ago, was the result of my second midlife crisis. The first one led me back to university when I was thirty-seven. But that is getting ahead in the story.

Whether Thailand's inhabitants originated in Thailand or migrated from China or Burma, their ethnic blood has been richly infused by Vietnamese, Cambodian, Lao, Mon Burmese, Malay, Indian, and even Persian strains. The most prominent minority group is the Chinese who, while retaining much of the culture of the Middle Kingdom, have been absorbed into the Thai fabric without the conflict with the indigenous majority as has often occurred in Southeast Asia. Northern Thailand is Burmese and Laotian influenced while Northeastern culture betrays strong Lao ancestry. The South has been richly endowed by its proximity to the Muslim culture of Malaysia. Both the North and the South hold tribal peoples of surprising diversity. Each of the six principal groupingsHmong (Meo), Lisu, Akha, Lahu (Musur), Mien (Yao) and Karenin the North have ancient origins in China, arriving in Thailand's northern hills in recent centuries. Each has a distinct language incomprehensible to the others, yet despite their differences, there is little conflict among them. The South has its Chao Lay Sea Gypsies, an animist seafaring people with their own language and customs. Thai values
    Etiquette

Buddhist, Chinese, and Muslim shrines are open to foreigners but you should dress appropriately when visiting. Shorts and sleeveless shirts are discouraged and you should remove your shoes before entering. You may photograph monks (but women may not touch them), "wats" (temples), images (except the Emerald Buddha) and all Buddhist ceremonies. A non-Muslim cannot enter a mosque during prayer time and some areas are off-limits to women. Ask first. Hilltribe houses have special spirit rooms which are closed to outsiders; entering them will violate their sanctity.

http://www.boi.go.th/english/thailand/culture.html
The origins of the Thais is a much debated topic among academics. Three decades ago it could be said with presumed certainty that the Thais originated in northwestern Szechuan in China about 4,500 years ago and later migrated south to their present homeland. However, this theory has been altered by the discovery of remarkable prehistoric artefacts in the village of Ban Chiang in the Nong Han District of Udon Thani Province in the Northeast of Thailand. These include evidence of bronze metallurgy dating back 3,500 years, as well as other indications of a culture far more sophisticated than previously believed by archaeologists. It now appears that Thais might have originated here in Thailand and later scattered to various parts of Asia, including some parts of China. "Siam" is the name by which the country was known to the world until 1939 and again between 1945 and 1949. On May 11, 1949, an official proclamation declared that the country would henceforth be known as "Thailand."

    History of Thailand's culture
Now for a bit of history to complete the bird's eye view of Thailand's culture. A thousand or more years ago, most of Thailand apart from the southern area in the Malay Peninsula, was under the domination of the hinduiz ed Mon-speaking people of Dvaravati (457-657 A.D.) and the Khmer or Cambodian Empires (957-1257 AD); while the Malay Peninsula was under the suzerainty of Srivijaya, the hinduized Sumatran Empire (657-1157 A.D.). During these times the Thai, as a race, emigrated gradually from their home in Southern China into the Indo-Chinese Peninsula. During these times many off-shoots of the Thai tribes Siam or Palized into Samadesa. There is no doubt that the Thai had been befor e that time already in the land of the Mon and The Khmer Empire but they were only a minority and formed themselves into semi-independent states under the suzerainty of these empires. Traditionally these Thai who settled in Central Thailand or Siam were called Thai Noi or Lesser Thai in contrast to Thai Yai or Major Thai who are the Shans of Burma. Traditionally the Thai Noi or Lesser Thai came from the north of Thailand. It was therefore presumed that they were the Northern Thai of
