History of Thailand - culture and background country
Thailand means "land of the free", and throughout its 800-year history, Thailand can boast the distinction of being the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized. Its history is divided into five major periods :
Nanchao Period (650-1250 A.D.)
The Thai people founded their kingdom in the southern part of China, which is Yunnan, Kwangsi and Canton today. A great number of people migrated south as far as the Chao Phraya Basin and settled down over the Central Plain under the sovereignty of the Khmer Empire, whose culture they probably accepted. The Thai people founded their independent state of Sukhothai around 1238 A.D., which marks the beginning of the Sukhothai Period. Sukhothai Period (1238-1378 A.D.)

Thailand is a country of scenic diversity and ancient traditions, of tranquil temples and modern urban excitement. With and independent history going back more than seven centuries, it has managed to absorb a variety of cultural influences and blend them into something uniquely and memorably Thai.
CENTRAL REGION
The fertile Central Plains region, watered by the winding Chao Phraya River, has long been Thailand's cultural and economic heart. "Kin khao", the Thai expression for "to eat", translates literally as "to eat rice" ; and the vast checkerboard of paddy fields on either side of the river has traditionally provided the kingdom with its staple grain. When the annual monsoon rains sweep across the plains, the fields are transformed into a sea of vivid green dotted here and there with farming villages and the occasional gleaming spire of a Buddhist temple.

Fodor's Thailand Travel Guide Phi Phi Island Patong Phi Phi Island Patong ... Thailand The People of Phuket Official Phuket records reflect a local population of around 200,000 inhabitants. The two main population centers are on opposite sides of the island. On the east coast is Phuket Town, the capital and on the west coast is Patong Beach, Phuket's center of tourism. The residents of Phuket are Thais and Chinese who migrated from the mainland to work in tin mines, Malaysian Muslims who came to work in the rubber plantations and the Chao Ley or sea gypsies, one of the earliest groups to inhabit Phuket. The Chinese make up around 35% of the island's population. They are different from the people who settled in Bangkok and other regions of Thailand, as they arrived mainly from the Hokkien region of China the same as the people now living in Singapore and Malaysia. As elsewhere in Asia, many of the Chinese have now become fully integrated into Thai society and many of them own businesses both large and small. They are responsible for a large part of the trade volume on Phuket and their influence is visible in many places such as the Chinese temples on Phuket or the annual Chinese Vegetarian Festival in October, a major tourist attraction of Phuket.

    Cultural Tips for Thailand
Thais are very easy going and would rarely tell you if you are doing something that offends them. However, here are few things to think about before you arrive:
    • Heads: Never touch an adult on the head. Thais consider the head to be the highest part of the body (spiritually) and would feel incredibly uncomfortable if you were to do so. Children under the age of 10 can be touched on the head in a playful manner, but the best rule of thumb is just to not do so.
    • Feet: On the opposite side of things, Thais consider the feet to be the lowest part of the body (spiritually) Therefore, it is extremely rude to do almost anything but walk with them. Do not put them up on chairs, ledges, etc to relax. Do not gain someone’s attention by tapping him or her with your foot. Do not open or hold open doors with your foot. This might seem a bit extreme and strange, but it will quickly become second nature.
    • Noses: Try not to blow your nose while eating. If you need to refresh your nostrils, it is best to get up and step away from the table.
