Culture
Thai art, principally sculpture and architecture, is divided into a number of historical styles beginning with Mon (6th-13thC), Khmer (7th-13th C), Peninsular (until 14th C), Lan Na (13th-14th C), Sukhothai (13th-15th C), Lopburi (10th-13th C), Suphanburi-Sangkhlaburi (13th-15th C), Ayuthaya A (1350-1488), Ayuthaya B (1488-1630), Ayuthaya C (1630-1767) and Ratanakosin (19th C to present). Classical Thai music has similarities to Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Indonesian music. The traditional Thai orchestra is composed of woodwind, string and percussion instruments. The most significant is a double-handed drum; before a performance, the players make offerings of flowers and incense to the drum, which is considered to be the 'conductor' of the music's spiritual content. There are several forms of classical dance in Thailand. Most are intimately connected to drama, particularly the epic journey tale of Prince Rama's search for his beloved Princess Sita, who has been abducted by the evil demon Ravana. These dance performances feature elaborate costumes and masks. Thai cuisine is pungent and spicy, seasoned with heaps of garlic and chillies and a characteristic mix of lime juice, lemon grass and fresh coriander. Galanga root, basil, ground peanuts, tamarind juice, ginger and coconut milk are other common additions. Fish sauce or shrimp paste are mainstays of Thai dishes, and of course rice is eaten with most meals. Main dishes include hot and sour fish ragout, green and red curries, various soups and noodle dishes. Thai food is served with a variety of condiments and dipping sauces. Snacks and appetisers include fried peanuts, chicken, chopped ginger, peppers and slices of lime. There is an incredible variety of fruit available, either fresh or juiced. Sugar-cane juice and, for something stronger, rice whisky are favourite local tipples.

Comparing gay travel packages S Thailand does have a gay culture, but much of it has been created by westerners. As a visitor, looking for nightlife, for gay sex, or for gay friends, this is largely the culture you'll most readily find. Here you'll meet outgoing and friendly Asian men who are interested in meeting westerners. This can give the impression that most Thai men who we'd think of as gay are looking for westerners. That's not the case. But those you meet will often be interested in meeting Americans. Thai culture does not place a premium on youth in the way that western societies do. If you're over 35, you probably feel over the hill in the U.S. You can still be quite desirable in Thailand. This comes as a pleasant surprise to middle-aged and older gay Americans!

Thailand History
The first true Thai kingdom was established in AD 1238, though the country had been settled since 3,600 BC. The ensuing two centuries are known as the Sukhothai period, a kind of Golden Age when Thais made great contributions to writing and Theravada Buddhism and generally expanded their empire. The empire eventually fell into decline, and though it was occasionally dominated for periods by its Southeast Asian neighbors, Thailand (or Siam, as it was called then) was the only country in the region not colonized by Europeans. Perhaps because it was never a colony, the ruins of Sukhothai and other ancient Thai kingdoms are exceptionally well preserved today. The remains of these great cities date from vastly different time periods, so there are distinct differences between them, and it's possible to visit them all without being bored. Modern Thai history begins with the revolution of 1932, which shifted power from the king to a coalition of military and elected officials. In 1939, the country changed its name from Siam to Thailand. Despite its loss of power, the monarchy continues to exert enormous influence on Thai people. The current king, Rama IX, is the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history and is beloved by nearly everyone. Royal birthdays are treated as national holidays, and pictures of the king and queen can be found in most homes and many public places. The near-unanimous approval of the monarchy has lent a stability to Thailand not found in some other Southeast Asian countries. That stability has helped Thailand become one of the leading countries in the region.

Thailand Culture
The main religion in Thailand is Theravada Buddhism, but there are also Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, Christians and other religions in Thailand. Buddhist teachings have had a large effect on the culture and attitude of people in Thailand . There are stunning Buddhist temples which are very interesting to visit. Thai culture is also affected by the different ethnic groups living in Thailand , such as the different hill tribes from China , Tibet , Laos and Myanmar , and the sea gypsies in the south. Thailand is very interesting historically and has some very impressive ancient monuments. Click here to book your holiday now As it is a Buddhist country nudity or topless sun bathing is frowned upon. This may seem odd given the Thais' tolerance of prostitution but Thais are very modest. If washing in a public place, keep yourself covered with a sarong. Outside tourist resorts men should not wander round without a shirt on and women should not wear sleeveless tops or short skirts/shorts. Don't point your feet at anyone or any sacred image or object - the feet are the lowest part of the body and are considered the lowest part of the body spiritually as well. The Thais revere their monarch, so do not insult the King or be negative about monarchy. Stand when national anthem is played, for instance in the cinema at the start of a film, or at train stations at certain times of day.

Thailand is a country of scenic diversity and ancient traditions, of tranquil temples and modern urban excitement. With and independent history going back more than seven centuries, it has managed to absorb a variety of cultural influences and blend them into something uniquely and memorably Thai.
CENTRAL REGION
The fertile Central Plains region, watered by the winding Chao Phraya River, has long been Thailand's cultural and economic heart. "Kin khao", the Thai expression for "to eat", translates literally as "to eat rice" ; and the vast checkerboard of paddy fields on either side of the river has traditionally provided the kingdom with its staple grain. When the annual monsoon rains sweep across the plains, the fields are transformed into a sea of vivid green dotted here and there with farming villages and the occasional gleaming spire of a Buddhist temple.

Thai Culture
Of course, the vast majority (95%) of Thais are Buddhists. Although there are many Malay decent Muslims in the south, and even hill tribe (Karen) in the north and western Burmese border area. The traditional Thai greeting is the "wai" (like putting your hands together to pray, but higher and lowering your head). And all Thai's love their King and find any detrimental action or word against either him, or their religion particularly offensive, even provocative. So you should always pay utmost respect to both. This includes standing up straight and smart whenever you hear the national anthem. Plus always respecting religious leaders and priests. It may be "OK" to hold onto your seat in a bus crowded full with old and pregnant women. But if a priest enters, you had better give up your seat! Although most westerners find such things alien, even oppressive. The Thais do this out of respect, even love, not command. And you should be very careful to honor their undoubted grace by following suit.

Thailand - Culture Thai Kingdom
Thailand is very much a Kingdom, proud of its status and its monarch - every morning and evening the flag is honoured and the national anthem sung. Thais are extremely patriotic and the King is a real figurehead.
King Bhumipol Adulyadej, ninth of the Chakri dynasty is the longest-reigning monarch in the world, having been crowned in 1950. His popularity is well founded - during his long reign he has been seen as a symbol of hope and protector for this rapidly developing nation, setting up projects in far-flung provinces and personally intervening in 1992 to heal rifts caused by pro-democracy protests and shootings.
Famous kings in Thai history include: King Ramkamhaeng, Sukhothai 1280-1317; U-Thong, Ayutthaya Narai 1657-88 (many Europeans visited his court); Rama 1, Chakri dynasty (moved the capital to Bangkok Mongkut and made famous in the film 'The King and I', starring Yul Brynner); Rama V (Chulalongkorn) and Vl (instigated the process of modernisation and westernisation).

Shops open between 9 and 10 in the morning and close around 8 at night; the smaller ones are generally closed between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. Shopping centers and supermarkets are open later (until 9 or 10 at night) as well as during weekends. Alto Las Condes, considered the most modern shopping mall in South America, will make Europeans and North Americans feel right at home. At the other end of the spectrum, a visit to the Mercado central (central market) in Santiago or any other city is a worthwhile taste of popular culture.
