To understand of the amazing wealth and character of Thailand's cultural heritage, you must begin with the influence of ancient India. This first entered Southeast Asia perhaps 2,300 years ago. It continued for several centuries as Indian merchants and scholars settled in the region. Want the in Thailand Request direct to our partner hotels. It is easy to see how important this influence is to modern Thailand. Buddhist religion and popular myth are the most obvious examples. Much of Thailand's royal tradition is also rooted in Indian culture. The present dynasty, of which his Majesty King Bhumibol is the ninth monarch , is known formally as the House of Chakri. While this title comes directly from the name of the founding monarch before he became king, the word chakra actually means the discuss of Hindu mythology. It provides a clear link to Hindu beliefs.
According to ancient belief, his Majesty is the fount of everything. His representative still presides over the stately Ploughing Ceremony in May each year to foretell the state of the annual harvest. The precise date and time of the event are determined by court astrologers. Both the ceremony and the astrology come directly from India.

"For all the desolate, miserable, god-forsaken places on this earth, Sukhothai must surely be the worst." So wrote Reginald Campbell in Teak-Wallah, an account of his time as a forestry official in northern Thailand in the 1920s. Perhaps Sukhothai, 450 kilometres north of Bangkok, is not one of Thailand's most attractive towns, but just 12 kilometres away are the magnificent ruins of the Kingdom's first capital, from which the modern town takes its name. Mr Campbell may have had a blind spot for the history and culture of his host country, though his complete silence on the historical remains of Sukhothai (they should have at least provided some respite from the boredom of which he complained so bitterly) is indicative of the neglect the ancient site has suffered until comparatively recently. Lopburi Q The Lonely Planet guidebook says......? A The town of Lopburi, 154km north of Bangkok, has been inhabited since at least the Dvaravati period (6th to 11th centuries AD) when it was called Lavo. Nearly all traces of Lavo culture were erased by Khmer and Thai inhabitants following the 10th century, but the Lopburi National Museum has many Dvaravati artifacts. Ruyins and statuary in Lopburi span a remarkable 12 centuries.
King Narai fortified Lopburi in the mid-17th century to serve as a second capital when the kingdom of Ayuthaya was threatened by a Dutch naval blockade. His palace in Lopburi was built in 1665 and he died there in 1688.
For the visitor, Lopburi is of interest for its fine juxtaposition of ancient brick ruins and not-so-ancient shophouses, hotels and restaurants. It is one of the few cities in Thailand that actually feels as old as it is. The town also boasts a resident troop of monkeys that keeps things lively. Abstract
An archaeological site has been identified in northeastern Thailand using airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) . The site consist of a pair of concentric ancient moats or canals which one surrounded an ancient town called "Muang Ham Hork " Near Ban Rai, Tambol Ban Khwao,Aamphoe Ban Khwao, Changwat Chaiyaphum. The siteenclosed by the moat is approximately 1.6Kmin diameter. It is estimated that the site dates from the Dvaravati period (1,200-1,600 BP). Today, the site is covered by cultivated land , and now only a few earth wall and moats remain in the eastern part of the town. A part of a high wall or gates appears in the south ,where a red sandstone Buddhist altara with the size of 2 m . 0.60m .*0.30m .was found on the top of the remaining wall , and broken pottery was also found at the area of the site .
The SAR data was collected by the Canada Center for Remote Sensing Convair 580,as part of the joint Canada-Thailand Globe SAR Program .globe SAR is designed to develop SAR expertise in a number of countries around the world, prior to the launch of Canada's Radarsat in 1995. Due to the characteristics of radar, in particularity capability to distinguish between adjacent areas with slightly different levels of soil moisture, it is a most effective in identifying sites such as this one, in tropical or sub-tropicalenviornments. While archaeology was not the prime objective of the GlobeSAR program in this region , the unexpected results will add considerably to Thailand's archaeological inventory. It is planned to review the SAR data from all eight sites in Thailand to determine whether or not other sites or features can be identified.

The city of Korat is the main tourist base in this area. There are many attractions in the town. This is the major starting point for visitons interested in the ancient Khmer civilization. The border between Thailand and Laos is marked by the Mekong River to the east. The mountainous region to the south of the plateau contains the border with Cambodia. The city of Korat is one of Thailand's busiest regional centers. Goods are shipped from this area, especially Thai silk, by truck, train and airplane. Public transportation to Korat offers many choices, schedules and prices. The inhabitants of this area have a Laos background instead of Thai. This is the Isan area and even the language is more Lao than Thai and even native Thais from other parts of the kingdom have difficulty communicating here. The Old City The ancient town walls, painted white, and moat mark the original site. Parts of this wall are over 1,000 years old. The village has expanded to a larger town with this ancient boundary ignored at times. The influence of the centuries has shapped the architecture and culture of this whole settled region.

Instructional Format Using on-site visits to locations ranging from archaeological and historical sites, museums, to contemporary traditional indigenous as well as culturally "main-stream" communities, students become acquainted with the prehistory, history, and the rural to urban ethnographic spectrum of the people of Thailand. Students are confronted by a variety of alternative explanations and issue-oriented perspectives that deal specifically with Southeast Asian archaeological concerns. This course will provoke comparative archaeological and ethnohistorical information, theories and controversies related to the various cultures and civilizations that flourished in ancient Thailand: from the earliest human colonization during Pleistocene time, through early village, Khmer Empire, emergent and later dominant Thai culture and eventually through the present.
Course Evaluation and Grading Student evaluation will be based on active participation in class activities, a structured daily journal and a set of essays demonstrating competency in synthesizing assumptions and facts about anthropological questions relevant to cultural development in the region.

No one can deny, a good guidebook to a country is helpful, not only to guide you once you arrive but also to help you plan your trip before you ever start. For this very reason, Thai Airways International has published a 68-page guide called Discover Thailand that is now available for those who are interested in travelling to the Kingdom. The other good news is that you can pick up a copy at any THAI office in cities around the world where THAI flies, and it’s free of charge. In the introduction, Discover Thailand tells readers that Thailand, “The Land of Smiles,” has more to offer travellers than any other destination in the Asia/Pacific region, and for the rest of the booklet it tells why. And what reasons it gives! “Be welcomed by a friendly people.” “Be fascinated by an ancient civilization and colourful culture.” “Be enchanted by glittering temples and exotic open-air bazaars.” “Be rejuvenated with a stay in a luxurious health spa.” “Be warmed by tropical sunshine at a beach resort.” “Be tempted by delicious food.” With the reminder, “Whatever your tastes, reward them with a vacation in Thailand.” The booklet is the product of THAI’s Royal Orchid Holidays (ROH) which offers outstanding vacation tours throughout the Kingdom. ROH, as it is called, reminds us that some travellers wish to fill their itinerary with activity and adventure tours, while others are content with sightseeing or perhaps shopping, and there are those who prefer a totally relaxed vacation by the beach. The choice offered by ROH is dazzling.
