Thailand Hotel Guide The area between the 6th and the 20th line of latitude (see Full Map of Thailand ) that is now known as Thailand has since ancient times been the home of highly developed civilizations, long before it was "discovered" in the 16th century by Europeans (as a matter of fact, even before the Thai themselves arrived there). The earliest evidence of settlement is the Ban Chiang culture that existed in the 5th century B.C. in the Northeast of Thailand (many remains have been found in a small village near Udon Thani). The Ban Chiang people (their exact identity has not yet been determined) knew bronze, iron, ceramics, and ceremonial burials. They cultivated rice and kept domesticated animals. In the 3rd century A.D. they disappeared, for reasons still unknown today. Ancient Thailand (Mural at Wat Phra Kaew, Bangkok) 9 centuries later, from the 6th century A.D. on, the Mon culture flourished in Thailand. The Mon settled in the Menam Delta in the Central Plains and in the North (Haripunchai, now called Lamphun, was the capital of one of their most important kingdoms in the North) and brought Buddhism, Sanskrit, and many other Indian influences to Thailand. The so-called

    Protecting Thailand's National Treasures
Introduction by Willard Van De Bogart The Ayutthaya period carvings that have survived are well over 300 years old. As shown in the temple door at Wat Yai Suwannaram there is severe deterioration as a result of age and weathering. Chemical preservatives many times ruin the natural look of the original carvings as shown by the application to the wood on the upper temple carvings at Wat Yai Suwannaram. The legacy of these carvings not only comes from Thailand's history, but also from the ancient Khmer civilization which created Angkor Wat in the 12th century. When Thailand invaded Angkor Wat in 1431AD it took with them many of the artisans from that culture. All of the wooden temples in the classic Khmer period no longer exist. If Thailand does not pay more attention to its National Treasures it too will loose these magnificent works of art. The two photographs below show a completely weathered door from the Ayutthaya period that is currently being protected inside Wat Rakang, however, no kind of wood protection has been applied to it, and it will continue to deteriorate. The more recent carving to the right is the door currently at the Ayutthaya temple erected in Wat Rakang, and there are clear signs of the gold leaf being eroded as well as the wood.
The Ayutthaya Temple Door inside Wat Rakang
Photographs by Willard Van De Bogart These photographs clearly show signs of weathering. The concerns expressed in The Nation newspaper are very timely. The message is clear. Thailand must manage it's national treasures in such a way that they will be preserved for many years to come so all the world can appreciate their beauty.

The history of Thailand is tangled among and influenced by the histories and events of the cultures that surrounded it. Understanding one culture's past requires a glimpse into several others and how the actions of one affected the history of many.
Modern Thailand was once ancient Siam which was founded on a land once inhabited by cultures that have only been revealed in the past few decades.
Charles Kimball paints a fascinating, compelling and concise literary mural of Southeast Asia that begins with a Bronze age civilization that dates to 3,600 B.C.
A Concise History of Southeast Asia
    by Charles Kimball
    A Geographical Introduction
The landscape of Southeast Asia is complex. Most of the terrain is rugged hills and mountains covered by jungle, with swamps or an occasional savanna in the lowlands. To the south, shallow seas and far-flung archipelagoes make for relatively easy travel by water. The climate, however, is very predictable; torrential rains are brought in seasonally by the monsoon weather of the Indian Ocean, and the rest of the year is cooler and drier. The peoples of this region are as diverse as the geography itself. Dominant ethnic groups like the Vietnamese, Thais, etc., have always preferred to live in river valleys and other low-lying areas, which are the best places for growing rice. Usually the highlands are available for anybody who wants them, and they have been settled by various ethnic minorities. The result is that about 85% of the population is concentrated on 15% of the land, with the minority groups thinly spread over the rest. Even ministates like Brunei and Singapore have ethnic minorities living within their borders; there is no homogeneous society in this part of the world.

by Charles Kimball The original inhabitants of Southeast Asia were a short, hairy, black-skinned race related to the Australian Aborigines, commonly called Negritos. Today they are found only in the most remote areas, still living a stone age lifestyle, but once they roamed the entire region, hunting and practicing slash-and-burn agriculture as far north as the Yangtze River. At this early date the Khorat smiths were doing better work than their Mesopotamian counterparts; by 3000 B.C. they figured out that the strongest bronze alloy is made by mixing 1 part of tin with nine parts of copper. They were probably helped by a geographical advantage: Southeast Asia is the world's richest source of tin. Tin is uncommon in the West, and before the Mesopotamians discovered it, they made bronze by mixing copper and arsenic, with brittle and sometimes hazardous results. At the 1600 B.C. level, archeologists came across another important discovery: iron spearheads, knives and bracelets. Normally the Hittites of ancient Turkey are credited with being the first people to forge iron, but these objects are just as old as anything the Hittites produced. Around the same time, the people went from dry cultivation to the wet-cultivation of rice in flooded fields that is still practiced today; that greatly increased the total food supply. The

History Early History The Dvaravati (Mon) Period The Srivijaya Empire The Khmers ... The Rise of Bangkok: The Chakri Dynasty From the 6th century, Southeast Asia underwent a gradual period of Indianization. Merchants and missionaries from India introduced Brahmanism and Buddhism to the region, as well as Indian political and social values, and art and architectural preferences. Many Tai groups adopted Buddhism, combining its doctrine with their own animistic beliefs. But the true significance of India's impact can be seen in the rise of two of the greatest Southeast Asian civilizations, the Mon and Khmer. Historians have very little information about the Mon civilization.
