Asian American Heritage Month? Get Real
Date:

Topic: Society

February 14, 2003 Imagine a Black History Month observed primarily by fried chicken, watermelon, and tap dancing festivals, with barely a mention of slavery, Jim Crow, the civil rights movement, Brown v. Board of Education , Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., Paul Robeson, Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X. The way most Asian American organizations celebrate Asian American Heritage Month (see below) is just as pointless. Americans who patronize and appropriate the most palatable aspects of Asian culture on a year-round basis without giving a single thought to Asian American empowerment issues do not deserve a special month when it is all served up to them on a convenient combination platter.
This May, instead of coast-to-coast dumpling parties and dragon dances, wouldn't it be more productive to use this brief and precious time in the spotlight to raise the nation's awareness about the historical and continuing relevance of race to the Asian American experience? Real Asian American heritage (to paraphrase Mari Matsuda ) subsists in our memory of the people who went to bed hungry, who lost land to the tax collector, who worked to exhaustion and ill-health, who faced pain and relocation, who blasted the tunnels for the railroad, who stooped over the short-handled hoe, and who fought for a democracy that didn't include them.

Years ago, Asian American literature may have conjured images of haikus and little else. Until the mid-1900s, most Americans' knowledge of it was limited to works set in Asia written by American authors, such as "The Good Earth" and other books by Pearl S. Buck. However, Asian American authors have gradually won over more and more readers. The phenomenal popularity of Amy Tan's works is testament to the genre's success.
Asian American literature encompasses a diverse array of cultures, from Chinese and Japanese to Indian, Korean and Filipino. Explore the following sites to sample a taste of Asian American literature.

Renee Tajima-Peña and Quynh Thai Genre/Year/Length
Documentary, 1997, 85 minutes Description
"Hilarious, insightful and highly original..."
San Francisco Examiner Part road movie, part memoir, Tajima-Peña recalls her childhood travels in the 1960s and '70s - back in the days when you could cross five states without ever catching a glimpse of another Asian face. Tajima-Peña comments, "Ross Perot once said, 'These immigrants aren't going anywhere, so you might as well get used to them. ' When I was growing up, assimilation meant being one homogenous society . I want to show that today the question is not how people become so-called 'real Americans' but how America has become its people." Between 1970 and 1990 alone, the Asian American population multiplied seven times over. Now the fastest growing ethnic group in the US, Asian Americans represent more than 50 nationalities and range from impoverished refugees to multi-millionaire entrepreneurs. Tajima-Peña embarks on a rollicking ride across this terrain - where battles over immigration, race, and multiculturalism rage on, and a new American identity is developing.
