By Tom Lee Because gay Asian Americans share these unique experiences of identity, it is important for support groups such as GAPA to exist, insists Duazo. These groups create a supportive network and in turn form into their own communities tailored to the specific needs of the Asian American community. Involvement in these organizations also increases awareness and provides a voice for gay Asian Americans who otherwise would not have one, he says. As if to reflect the growing presence of gay Asian Americans, more and more gay ethnic and inter-ethnic groups have been established, such as Malaysian Gays and Lesbians Club, Pacific Friends, Lavender Dragon Society, and Trikone. As the population of Asian American grows, more and more young people will struggle with their cultural and sexual identities. Gay Asian support organizations may be the answer to empower these individuals, says Duazo.

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Asian-Americans constitute a significant minority in the U.S. and are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in this country, yet little is known about their particular educational needs, especially at the early childhood and elementary levels. This digest provides information to help teachers gain a better understanding of Asian-American children, particularly those from East and Southeast Asian cultures, and identify culturally appropriate educational practices to use with those children.
ASIAN-AMERICAN CHILDREN: WHO ARE THEY?
The term Asian-American covers a variety of national, cultural, and religious heritages. Indeed, Asian-Americans represent more than 29 distinct subgroups who differ in language, religion, and customs. The four major groups of Asian-Americans are East Asian, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean; Pacific Islander; Southeast Asian, such as Thai and Vietnamese; and South Asian, such as Indian and Pakistani (Pang, 1990). Although there are similarities among the various subgroups, they have different origins, ecological adaptations, and histories.

A universal lesson rooted in the particular Without being preachy, Tony Johnston reminds us that sometimes it takes a shift in perspective to recognize our treasures. Uri Shulevitz did this with THE TREASURE, another book of great loveliness. Children may respond even more to this universal lesson through reading Johnston's book, which is rooted in the life of one young Japanese American boy learning to love and appreciate his grandfather. The details in this book are so lovingly, tenderly included, and Barry Root's watercolor/gouache illustrations complement Johnston's spare, lyrical prose beautifully. This exquisite book goes beyond the 4 to 8 crowd. It touched the hearts of all my family - teenager included. I've yet to read it without feeling tears or wanting to kick off my shoes. You'll have to read FISHING SUNDAY to find out what that means Flowers from Mariko Authors: Rick Noguchi, Michelle Reiko Kumata, and Deneen Jenks

Angkat : The Cambodian Cinderella by Jewell Reinhart Coburn, Edmund Flotte (Illustrator). Reading level: Ages 4-8. Hardcover - 32 pages 1st edition (June 1998) Shen's Books. "In the first English language retelling of this ancient Cambodian tale, our heroine goes further, survives more, and has to conquer even her own mortality to regain her rightful place. Cambodia's Cinderella, Angkat-child of ashes-endures gret wrongs as she seeks to rise above distresses caused by her own family. Angkat appeared in an 18th century French essay which was found by Dr. Coburn deep in some dusty archives while researching Khmer culture and folklore. She was drawn to the story immediately, and the rest is now history. Flotte, an internationally-known watercolorist, places the reader in the scene of the story. He broadens the storytelling by effectively employing expressions, gestures, lighting, and ambiance in each illustration. ."

On this page: Diabetes mellitus poses a rapidly growing health challenge to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in the United States. In 1997, the Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) population was estimated to be about 10 million, almost a 50 percent increase since the 1990 Census and representing about 3.8 percent of the total U.S. population. This group includes people whose origins are in the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Pacific Islands. Results of the 1990 census showed that the APIA population had the greatest increase of any major ethnic group, doubling in size since the 1980 census. The Immigration Act of 1965 and the arrival of many Southeast Asian refugees under the Refugee Resettlement Program after 1975 contributed to the increase in population observed in the past two decades.

Asian American
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An Asian American is a person of Asian ancestry or origin who was born in or is an immigrant to the United States The term "Asian American" is credited to the historian Yuji Ichioka who, in the late 1960s, used it to describe members of a new pan-ethnic radical political identity who shared common histories, experiences, and goals. This term has largely replaced the politically loaded term "oriental" (that referred to Western notions of a subjugated colonial "other", fr. orientalism ), which was popularly used before the 1990s to describe East Asian peoples regardless of nationality, upbringing, or origin. Although immigrants from the " Middle East " (Western and Central Asia) are geographically Asian, they have generally neither been sufficiently visibly distinct as a group in America nor have they historically arrived in such large numbers to warrant attention as a major American racial or ethnic group until very recently (see ). As a result, they are not considered by most Americans to be typical Asians or Asian Americans, but identified by other means, such as " Arab Americans ". For these same reasons, northern Asians such as Siberians and peoples from former

The largest Asian groups in the United States today are Chinese, Filipinos, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese. All of whom are past the one million mark. But there is a group not nearly as large but no less significant in their contributions to American society. In the year 2000, the US Census documented a little more than 150,000 Thai and Thai Americans living in this country. Many are first generation immigrants but a growing number are the second generation of American born Thais. And they are now making their presence known. In 1998, a few members of this highly educated demographic group felt the need to form an organization separate from the Thai Cultural Organizations that their parents belonged to. "There was no organization that served Thai American young professionals." said Joe Wana. Wana along with friends Paul Ark, Tammy Chiemmongkoltip and Allan Rangsithienchai were ready to build a community that catered to both their Thai heritage and their American upbringing. And so in December of that year, they founded the Thai American Young Professionals Association (TAYPA). And if growth is any indication of need, then there definitely is a growing population of young Thai Americans who are in need of a sense of belonging. In only 3 years, TAYPA has grown from a handful of dedicated volunteers to several hundred members with chapters in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Boston, and Washington DC.

I am therefore interested in the political and the social of the so-called private. My research employs both interviews and participant observations and aligns with feminist and race theories. I have published on topics of Vietnamese transpacific marriages and on racialized identities of second generation Vietnamese Americans.
