Southeast Asians in Washington State
By: Ko Vang, Community Outreach Coordinator I
t’s hard to believe that Southeast Asian Americans have onlyeen in the United States for the past 25 years. Unlike other Asian Pacific American (APA) groups, who immigrated as early as the mid-1800’s to the U.S., voluntarily or as cheap labor for the developing states, the Southeast Asians entered the borders of the U.S. as refugees of the Vietnam War.
From 1975 to 1978, three different waves of Southeast Asians (Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Thai, and various indigenous peoples) immigrated to the U.S. The federal government, in its struggle to resettle the refugees, contracted with private voluntary agencies, such as the International Rescue Committee, to disperse the refugees throughout the U.S. in order to prevent resource restraints. Today, although small pockets of Southeast Asians may be found in every state, the majority (90%) resides in 10 states.
Washington State participated in the resettlement policy and received 18,000 Southeast Asian refugees in 1975. Since that time, this population has grown significantly. Although the actual numbers of Southeast Asian Americans in Washington is not

Cultural Diversity: Eating in America
Asian
HYG-5253-95
Patti Hill Confucius said, "A man cannot be too serious about his eating, for food is the force that binds society together." This statement summarizes the importance of food in the Asian culture. Preparation is meticulous, and consumption is ceremonious and deliberate. Two key elements draw the diverse cultures of the Asian region together: 1) the composition of meals (emphasis on vegetables and rice, relatively little meat); and 2) cooking techniques.
Description of Region
Asian-Americans have emigrated from the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Korea, and Japan. The religions they practice include Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Shinto (Japanese only). A large number of native Filipinos are Roman Catholic. The Vietnamese, Laotian, and Hmong cultures are discussed in separate fact sheets.
Food Habits and Their Relationships to Dietary Guidelines
Most Asians living in America adhere to a traditional Asian diet interspersed with American foods, particularly breads and cereals. Dairy products are not consumed in sufficient quantity, except for ice cream. Calcium is consumed through tofu and small fish (bones eaten). Fish, pork, and poultry comprise the main proteins. Significant amounts of nuts and dried beans are also eaten. Vegetables and fruits make up a large part of their food intake. Rice is the mainstay of the diet and is commonly eaten at every meal.

Asian Americans – what is their position in the US By Sonia Shah, Cambridge USA Sonia Shah is an editor/publisher with South End Press at Cambridge Massachusetts USA and a freelance writer. Her essays on Asian American issues and feminism have appeared in many American periodicals including Z Magazine, In These Times, Nuclear Times, The Indian American and have been widely anthologised in several books. She has co-founded two South Asian women’s groups in the US and was editor of Dragon Ladies: Asian American Feminists Breathe Fire (South End Press 1997). I write about Asian American issues on a fairly regular basis and in many ways consider myself an Asian American. Yet the term ‘Asian American’ itself is problematic. Most of the people whom others would characterise as ‘Asian American’ emphatically don’t think of themselves that way. (And many, including most of my family members would be almost offended: they are Gujeratis , thank you very much!) Our particular histories, ethnicities and nationalities are a million times more visceral and meaningful in our lives than pan- Asianness Asians show far more diversity than similariites . There is no shared ‘Asian’ ethnicity, language or

Understanding Our Perceptions of Asian Americans By Peter N. Kiang, Ed. D.
Graduate College of Education, University of Massachusetts at Boston
Related Lesson: Perceptions of Asian Americans A waitress asked: "Where are you from?" I told her my great-grandfather came to work the mines in New Mexico. My grandfather was a tailor in Oakland and my mother was born in Stockton. And the waitress interrupted and without any hesitation said: "So how do you like your new country?" He asked the price of beef. Then he said: "You Koreans charge too much." My brother said: "I'm not Korean, I'm Cambodian." But he's mad. He says: "You Koreans rip us off." The growth and diversification of the Asian American population in recent years has been nothing short of phenomenal. Driven by sustained immigration and refugee resettlement during the 1970's and 1980's, Asian Americans have emerged as the nation's fastest growing racial group. Given that the school-age Asian American population doubled in the 1980's and is expected to double again between 1990 and 2020, our schools and the larger society must confront some critical questions. For example, what do we know and what can we teach and learn about Asian Americans? Asian Americans number more than 9.1 million in the United States and represent more than thirty different nationalities and ethnic groups, including Samoan, Tongan, Guamanian, and native Hawai'ian from the Pacific Islands; Lao, Hmong, Mien, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai, Burmese, Malay, and Filipinos from Southeast Asia; Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Indian, and Sri Lankan from South Asia; Afghani and Iranian from Central Asia; and Korean, Japanese, and Chinese from East Asia. In the year 2000, the six largest Asian nationalities in the United States will be Filipinos, Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans, Asian Indians, and Japanese. The diversity of Asian Americans, in terms of their various languages, cultures, and histories is remarkable.

Asian Americans are one of the fastest-growing populations in the United States. In the State of Illinois, this diverse and often over-looked community of 473,000 includes Americans of Bangladeshi, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Pakistani, Thai, Tibetan and Vietnamese descent. The Asian American Institute was established in 1992 as a pan-Asian not-for-profit organization. The mission is to empower the Asian American community through advocacy, utilizing research, education, and coalition building.
Specifically, the Institute works to:
  • improve cooperation and mutual understanding by bringing ethnic Asian American communities together
raise the visibility of the Asian American community and spotlight its concerns so that elected officials, policy makers and the general public will understand
gather and disseminate data about Asian American communities
The Asian American Institute provides fiscal and programmatic managament and support for the following projects: ACON is a Asian American and Pacific Islander community network that connects concerned individuals with other nonprofits and community based organizations. ACON's network is composed of regional and national web/e-mail groups along with community organization websites. ACON also offers a website hosting service which enables organizations to setup and maintain their websites on their own with very little technical knowledge. For more information, see

These US Asian-born individuals emigrated from countries with the overall lowest breast cancer rates in the world.

Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs The University of Michigan was named one of the top universities for Asian American students in a recent article in A. Magazine: Inside Asian America The August/ September issue of A. Magazine lists the top schools for Asian Americans based on a wide variety of criteria, from retention and acceptance rates of Asian Americans, to the percentage of Asian American students, faculty and staff and the resources available for Asian Americans. The U-M is ranked 15th among research universities. The U-M's Asian American population has increased 40 percent in the 1990s to 3,642 students. Asian Americans are the largest student-of-color population on campus, representing 11.3 percent of the student body. The retention rate for Asian Americans is 85 percent. There are 320 Asian faculty members on campus, representing 8.2 percent of the faculty. Another reason for the high ranking is the active Asian American student body. More than 18 Asian American student groups including ethnic-specific student groups such as the Thai Student Association, Asian American Acting Troupe Descendants of the Monkey God and Asian Pacific American Women's Journal , an Asian American literary magazine. Asian American Voices for Affirmative Action by Paul Rockwell
Oakland, California
In a flip remark last June, University of California (UC) Regents Ward Connerly said: "I would be quite comfortable with only white and Asian students at UC, I have no problem with that."
It was Henry Der, Chair of Chinese for Affirmative Action who took Connerly and Pete Wilson to task. In his eloquent address to the UC Regents, August 20th, Der said: "If Asian American students were to attend certain UC campuses that are exclusively Asian and white, such segregated education would not prepare Asian American students to assume leadership positions in a multiracial California society. As a parent, I do not want any of my three children to experience or choose a segregated college education."
Pete Wilson's attempt to foment hostility between Asian American and African American communities has already backfired. Asian American support for affirmative action is growing. Throughout California's communities of color there is an awakened sense that an injury to one is an injury to all.
Filipinos for Affirmative Action, the Asian Law Caucus, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance; Kimi Lee, Executive Director of tbe University of California Student Association; and Eddie Wong, Western Region Rainbow Coalition Director, are playing an active role in defending affirmative action for America.
