So You Want to Become a Teacher
The credential required to teach any grade from Pre-K through grade 12 in a Texas public school is a teaching certificate. The certificate identifies both the grade range and (at the middle school and high school levels) the subject/content area the teacher is certified to teach. There are three grade ranges: Early Childhood - Grade 4 (elementary school), Grade 4 - Grade 8 (with grades 4 and 5 typically housed in elementary schools and grades 6 - 8 housed in middle or junior-high schools) and Grade 8 - Grade 12 (housed in both middle/junior-high schools and high schools). This classification of the grade ranges is fairly recent; although the grade alignments may be different from those with which you’re familiar, they are the official certificate ranges specified by the State Board for Educator Certification in Texas (SBEC).

According to the latest teacher supply and demand projections, the nation will need to hire 2.2 million people to teach who are not currently teaching in the nation's elementary and secondary schools in the next decade. There is mounting concern about teacher preparation and the quality of the teaching force. Alarms have also been sounded about the numbers of teachers who are teaching "out of field", i.e., teaching a subject for which they have neither an academic major nor a minor.

Texas law requires all individuals seeking educator certification to pass examinations in the areas which they seek certification. The purpose of these examinations is to ensure that each educator has the necessary academic content and professional knowledge to perform in Texas public schools. The Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) program was developed for this purpose. All UTA students are required to take a practice exam for each test prior to taking the actual TExES (see Frequently Asked Questions Contact the departmental advisor from your teaching field(s) to receive information about specific content information. Study guides should be downloaded as part of the practice test preparation. Teacher Education Certification Program
U.T. Dallas offers a rigorous university-based teacher certification curriculum and has built an outstanding reputation for producing excellent teachers. Coursework and field experiences leading to teacher certification are planned and implemented through the Teacher Development Center (972-883-2730) in coordination with the schools in the relevant disciplines. A model is used which calls upon the total resources of the institution rather than relying on a school of education. The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board have has reviewed the content and procedures of these curricula. Initial teaching certificates may be earned by undergraduates, concurrently with their degree studies, or by graduates from this or other institutions. Additional teaching field(s) may be added to valid certificates presently held. As of September 1, 1999, all Texas teaching credentials must be renewed every five years.

This program offered through the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) provides a unique opportunity to become a fully certified teacher in 12 to 18 months taking your instructional courses fully online via the Internet. The program is designed to certify individuals who hold Bachelor’s degrees in disciplines other than education. It is ideal for working adults wanting to change careers; those teaching on emergency credentials; those currently teaching without certification; or substitute teachers needing certification. If selected, you can work as a paid teacher of record in the classroom and begin three to four highly focused semesters of college work at the same time, with individual mentoring, supervision, and certification test preparation. Participants working in the classroom as a teacher of record generally receive the same salary and benefits as an entry-level teacher. When you complete the required course work you will also have nine or more hours that may apply towards a future master's degree. The program also requires that you pass the Texas Content Exam before the initial Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) certification in your particular field.
