The Attorney General's Role
The Attorney General protects consumers and the legitimate business community by filing civil lawsuits under the Deceptive Trade Practices Act and other consumer protection statutes. Lawsuits are filed on behalf of the State of Texas and the public good. This agency cannot represent individual consumers. Nevertheless, some legal actions do produce restitution for individual consumers. Read about major Attorney General consumer protection cases on the lawsuits and settlements page. Consumer Complaints filed with this agency may form the basis for an investigation into a company's business practices. In some cases, significant numbers of complaints about a business may give rise to legal action, not on behalf of the individual complainants but to enforce state law. The decision to investigate or file a lawsuit is based on a number of factors. Consumer Education is a third vital part of the Attorney General's mission. The best consumer protection is widespread public awareness of consumer rights and common snares. This Web site therefore offers

    • NOTICE If you are filling out the application for the entering class of 2005, and you are currently taking courses this Spring 2004 term (semester or quarter system), then you MUST wait until you have completed those courses, received those grades and entered those grades into this application. Your application will be returned to you so that you can enter them when you have received them. You will also have to wait and order that official transcript to reflect those Spring 2004 grades, otherwise the transcript cannot be used. Our website is currently undergoing some restructuring, so please take into consideration the dates listed on some of the pages were for last year's application cycle. Anywhere you see 2003, needs to be viewed as 2004. And anywhere you see 2004 should be 2005. Hopefully by next week (May 3-7) the website will be converted over to our new design. DON'T panic, the information will still be the same but hopefully more user friendly.

Information regarding openenrollment charter schools in texas public education According to the texas Education Code, the purposes of charter schools are to (1) improve student learning students, as well as potential charter applicants and the general public.
    http://www.tea.state.tx.us/charter
Home District Locator Index A-Z Divisions ... Advanced Search To further promote local initiative, the 1995 revision of the Texas Education Code established a new type of public school, known as a charter school. Charter schools are subject to fewer state laws than other public schools with the idea of ensuring fiscal and academic accountability without undue regulation of instructional methods or pedagogical innovation. Like school districts, charter schools are monitored and accredited under the statewide testing and accountability system. According to the Texas Education Code, the purposes of charter schools are to (1) improve student learning; (2) increase the choice of learning opportunities within the public school system; (3) create professional opportunities that will attract new teachers to the public school system; (4) establish a new form of accountability for public schools; and (5) encourage different and innovative learning methods.
The links below provide information and resources for charter school personnel, parents, and students, as well as potential charter applicants and the general public.

Schools get good marks across Texas
Scores up, dropouts down; HISD trails state average
By JANET ELLIOTT and KATHRYN A. WOLFE
AUSTIN If the state of Texas were a school district, it would receive a recognized rating this year because of rising test scores and declining dropout rates, Education Commissioner Jim Nelson said Thursday. RESOURCES Check your school: Accountability ratings for individual schools in the TEA's Houston region. TEA: Press release explaining the ratings. Back to school: HoustonChronicle.com resources, including links to school districts.
"This is outstanding performance for the state as a whole," said Nelson, who gave students, teachers and parents the credit for the achievement. But there was bad news for the state's charter schools. Of the 106 schools rated low-performing, 43 were charter schools.

A great place to work, raise a family and send your children to school.
Located in the northwest quadrant of San Antonio, Northside Independent School District, the 6th largest school district in Texas, is the heart of the most rapidly growing area in Bexar County. Many people say Northside ISD is not just in the heart of northwest San Antonio, but that it is the heart. They say this because the quality of the neighborhood schools is reflected in the quality of hundreds of smaller communities that make up Northside ISD. In Northside, schools are the hubs of their neighborhoods.
The District's appeal to families is due to factors such as excellent teachers, strong academic and extracurricular programs, and attractive and functional facilities. As a family-friendly District, our emphasis in on children and families. Northside also places great emphasis on a high quality work force and an employee-family culture.
Established in 1949 by the consolidation of several rural school districts, Northside today is 355 square miles of urban landscape, suburban growth and rural Texas hill country. As South Texas' largest school system, Northside is the "destination" district for thousands of families wanting a high quality school system. This is supported by the fact that between 1,200 and 1,500 new students arrive in Northside each year.
