Texas Sea Grant
Younger Named Marine Education Specialist
Matagorda County's short-term loss should be the long-term gain for the entire state of Texas. On May 1 Willie Younger ceased to be the marine agent for Matagorda County and became the marine education specialist for the Texas Marine Advisory Service. As education specialist, Younger will be based at the Texas State Marine Education Center, located on Matagorda Bay, in Palacios. Sea Grant has always been involved with marine education, but in recent years it has not had a specialist to provide a focus and coordination for educational programs, Hightower said. While other marine education programs and activities will continue elsewhere, Hightower said, the center will act as a focal point, directing education programs throughout the state. "I want to emphasize that our efforts through Willie will compliment and enhance current programs at the center and will not compete or conflict with ongoing programming," he said. "This joint venture in marine education would not have been possible if not for the vision and cooperation of the commissioners of the Navigation District," Hightower said. The Marine Education Center was originally a joint project of the navigation district and the Palacios school system. The navigation district owned bay-front property that was part of the former Camp Hulen, a National Guard Training base, and the school district wanted to start a marine education program for the school children of Palacios and the surrounding area, as well as for occasional groups from around Texas and even outside the state. As time passed, Wharton County Junior College and TSTC joined the mix, offering classes in aquaculture, occupational health and safety and diesel mechanics, as well as core curriculum classes such as English and government.

River Run '96 Coming Soon
Tired of the lack of rain drying up your summer fun? Make a run for the river. More specifically make a run to the 1996 River Run, sponsored by the Texas Marine Advisory Service and Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. The River Run is a four-day trip along the Guadalupe, from Canyon Dam to Matagorda Island and back to Seguin, designed for high school students and teachers of all grades. The trip emphasizes hands-on experiences and first-hand observations of the river and the Guadalupe watershed. "This is an opportune time to study the river and uses of water in the watershed during a drought" said Brazoria County Marine Agent Rich Tillman, who will lead the trip. River Run participants will learn much about the Guadalupe River system, including water quality, groundwater protection, wastewater treatment, water laws and policies, wildlife and fisheries, flood control and freshwater inflows for bays and estuaries. The trip will be July 16-19 and costs $50 for each participant. Participants must provide their own transportation to and from Seguin. Students and teachers will be paired in teams and teaming of a student and teacher from the same school is encouraged.

Reducing youth violence and promoting safety in schools are the goals of the Texas School Safety Center now forming at Southwest Texas State University. The center will work with teams of educators, parents and law enforcement officials from Texas communities and help them develop safety plans tailored to individual school districts. It will serve as an ongoing resource to help reduce youth violence and promote safety. The center will hold regional training sessions and a statewide school safety summit. Training sessions will educate the teams on security technology, creating positive school environments and other issues related to safe schools. Student leaders will attend a leadership training conference to learn about respecting the rights of others and handling disputes peacefully. The center will sponsor a middle school essay contest on violence prevention and peace. During the 1997-98 school year, there were almost 70,000 acts of violence reported on Texas public school campuses and more than 8,000 weapons were confiscated from students, according to Texas Education Agency statistics. Those figures, combined with growing concerns among parents and educators, led to the formation of the Texas School Safety Center.
