School Libraries and Their Impact on Student Performance
The Question
What effects do school libraries have on student achievement?
The Context
recent research has helped identify the specific functions of school libraries and librarians that most affect achievement. Recent studies of library systems in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Pennsylvania found that
  • Professionally trained and credentialed school library media specialists have a positive effect on student achievement. Library media specialists need teacher and principal support in order to be most effective. Support staff is essential if library media specialists are to fully affect student achievement. Library media specialists serve as both teachers of students and in-service providers for teachers. Effective library media specialists serve a key role in expanding access to information technology beyond the library and into the classrooms.
These findings were consistent across the four states and remained constant after controlling for student and community characteristics, including per-pupil expenditures, teacher characteristics, poverty, race and ethnicity, and adult educational attainment. The study highlighted in this issue of ResearchBrief examines the effects of Texas school libraries on student achievement.

Library Media Program Objectives :
Defining the Librarian's Responsibilities and Evaluation
Objectives
Objectives for school library media programs adhere to the concepts found in the Information Power guidelines . Defining objectives is a function of the school library media specialist in partnership with administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents. Objectives for the program become the school librarian's responsibility within the school and the library. The school librarian's evaluation should be based on the performance of those defined responsibilites. Here are some examples of program objectives that a school library media center might have, illustrated with sample action items (the school librarian's responsibilities). Learning and Teaching Objective:
We will provide resources and activities to promote student achievement and teacher knowledge, working collaboratively to help students achieve the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements and district learning requirements. (Sample action items here)
Information Access and Delivery Objective
We will provide access to information technologies, print resources, and systems, working collaboratively to help students and teachers achieve academic and personal success.

In an effort to address the immediate concerns of the Colorado education community, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) introduced the Safe Communities-Safe Schools initiative in the fall of 1999. This project will consist of the following strategies that will be available to all school communities in Colorado: information about the Safe Communities-Safe Schools Model, technical assistance, publications, web site, information house, media campaign, and a long-term response plan.

The coalition, formed in 1994, involves more than 1,500 educators, police, and youth workers in activities and stimulates the creation of community-based violence prevention coalitions. It has assisted schools in developing new violence prevention programs and facilitated networking and information sharing among members through bimonthly forums, major conferences, training seminars, task groups, youth involvement, and in-depth consultation and technical assistance to schools and communities.

17. Are Librarians Really Worth It?
with and without Centeralized Libraries (Ph.D. dissertation, North texas State Unviersity Lance,The Impact of school Library media centers on Academic
http://ccsd.net/schools/watson/libraryresearch.html
Are Librarians Really Worth It?
First, what is a librarian? The word librarian or even library media specialist can be misleading. This is because we are not talking about somebody who is simply a 'librarian,' or a person who checks out, catalogs and shelves books all day. Neither is this discussion about a 'media specialist,' who would sit behind a desk offering advice to teachers about which tools they should use in their lessons. This question refers to the relative value of a "teacher-librarian." In addition to running a library, this person is a 'teacher,' who instructs as many periods a day as any regular classroom teacher. This teacher-librarian almost always has post-baccalaureate experience with solid classroom foundations. It is important to understand this as it relates to student achievement.
What evidence supports having a teacher-librarian
in an elementary school?
Students who attend a school with a library and a teacher-librarian . . .
  • perform significantly better on tests for basic research skills. This includes locational skills, outlining and notetaking.

They're in order by the title of the book. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Jules Verne submitted by Danny Hillman. This book was pretty good. I really enjoyed reading this book because of the content and the story line. All of the characters seemed like they could be real. The adventure is a fun one to follow along with because, in a future world, it could really happen. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Mark Twain submitted by David Dwyer. T his book was pretty good. I enjoyed this book because it tells the tale of a boy who runs away with another black boy even though people are racist where they come from. These two boys embark a great journey to get away from the everyday hassles and troubles. Because Huck is a trouble some boy and always in the mix of things he feels he needs to get away and explore new horizons.
