to School Health Programs
Click here to access the manual via the table of contents. FOREWORD We are pleased to announce the availability of the long awaited resource manual, The Texas Guide to School Health Programs. This information is intended to enhance the educational process by providing guidance and resources for school administrators, school nurses, teachers and other staff members in the development, implementation, and evaluation of school health programs. This material replaces the previous manual School Nurse Handbook for the School Health Program, last published in 1989 by the Texas Education Agency. We are seeking funding to have this manual published as a book, but until then it will be available in its entirety here on the School Health Program website, or on CD ROM. The Texas Guide to School Health Programs was developed under the leadership of the Texas Department of Health, School Health Program, in collaboration with the University of Texas School of Nursing. A highly qualified group of professionals with diverse backgrounds and expertise assisted with providing content and reviewing the material. We hope this is a useful resource. Should you have any questions, please contact Anita Wheeler, R.N., (512) 458-7111 ext. 2909

Through Nutrition and Physical Activity
Six states recently were awarded CDC funds for establishing "State Nutrition and Physical Activity Programs to Prevent Obesity and Related Chronic Diseases." The Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at CDC is pleased to work with the following states on this program.
The purpose of the program is to prevent and control obesity and related chronic diseases by supporting States in the development and implementation of nutrition and physical activity interventions, particularly through population-based strategies such as policy-level change, environmental supports, and the social marketing planning process. Each of the awarded States below will (a) develop a plan for the priority population(s) they select, (b) develop appropriate internal and external partnerships to carry out the plan, and (c) develop, conduct, and evaluate nutrition and physical activity intervention projects in the population(s).
For more information about these projects, contact Sarah Kuester, Public Health Nutritionist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Email: sak2@cdc.gov

How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health

"...The primary mission of food companies, like that of tobacco companies, is to sell products. Food companies are not health or social service agencies, and nutrition becomes a factor in corporate thinking only when it can help sell food."
    Dr. Marion Nestle: Food Politics:
How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health

Before you or your child reach for that box of Fruit Loops this morning, you should know there's no fruit or fiber in the packaged cereal and half the calories come from sugar. "It's masquerading as cereal, but it's really candy," says Dr. Marion Nestle , professor and chair of the Nutrition and Food Studies Department at New York University and this morning's guest at 11am on the fund raising show of Go Vegan Texas!
The food industry is spending billions to keep children hooked on junk foods, she points out in her book, Food Politics, noting they like to target the young so that by the time children are two, they start recognizing and demanding food brands, like those sugar coated cereals.
"When children are asked to name their favorite food, many say pizza," Nestle says, "but when asked to name their favorite restaurant, they say McDonalds. That's the power of advertising."

HEALTHY FOOD FOR HEALTHY KIDS The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) received a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) block grant to promote specialty crops grown in Texas that include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts and honey. Because of real concerns that Texans, particularly children, are not eating properly and are at risk for obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, TDA is dedicating a part of this funding to a nutrition campaign called Healthy Food for Healthy Kids and has formed a Nutrition Advisory Task Force. This campaign will educate children, parents and the general public on the value of consuming fresh fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet. This will involve a multi-faceted approach outlined below: I. NUTRITION PROMOTION TARGETING SCHOOLS AND "AT-RISK" COUNTIES*
  • School Activities
  • Working in coordination with Texas schools is one of the best ways to reach a large audience of children. TDA will promote nutrition through the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables to children in grades K-5 in collaboration with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) program. The CATCH program teaches nutrition, targeting grades K-5 on four different levels – classroom curriculum, physical education, cafeteria/food service and parent outreach. These efforts will not only introduce the benefits of healthy eating choices, but will also highlight the array of Texas-grown products that can help children meet their nutritional needs.
