A Military Victory
As one Hispanic nurse's personal success story shows, serving in the military can help minority nurses overcome socioeconomic barriers, advance their education and develop into leaders By Rose A. Hazlett, LTC, AN, BSN, MSN There are many memories from my military career that will last a lifetime, such as scrubbing a toilet (or head, as it's referred to in the Navy) with a toothbrush, and standing at attention for countless hours in the rain. I will carry some of those memories to my deathbed.
The author (second from the left) with some of her army nurse colleagues. But believe it or not, those subservient and meaningless tasks have paved my way to success-both as a nurse and on a more personal level. I would never have known what it is to be a leader if I had not experienced the role of being a follower. The military philosophy is that these types of tasks help recruits build character and develop a disciplined life. In actuality, my superiors were instilling in me the values of pride in one's work, respect for authority and time management. Of course, it would be easier to perform a task with the proper tools, such as cleaning toilets with a toilet brush. However, completing the job as ordered, under less than optimal conditions, instills humility as well as a greater appreciation for cleanliness.

"Augustus Buchel: A Forgotten Texas Patriot," by Stanley S. McGovern, pp. 1-21. ABSTRACT: Augustus Buchel, trained in military schools in Europe, was an army officer in Spain and the Ottoman Empire before he went to Texas. He arrived in the Lone Star State with other German immigrants and served in the Mexican War, the Texas militia, and the Confederate Army. Although he served Texas without hesitation, he has been overlooked by most historians. KEY WORDS: Augustus Buchel; German immigrants; Mexican War; Texas cavalry; Civil War "Brother Against Brother: The Winter Skirmishes Along the Arkansas River, 1864-1865," by Jayme Lynne Stone, pp. 23-49. ABSTRACT: In 1864-1865 Confederate and Union troops vied for control of the Arkansas River valley between Lewisburg and Fort Smith. These skirmishes involved Federal and Confederate companies recruited from the valley. Federal plans to evacuate Fort Smith would have returned northern Arkansas to Confederate control jeopardizing loyal Arkansans and lengthening the conflict in the trans-Mississippi theater. KEY WORDS: Civil War, Arkansas River valley, Arkansas soldiers, Dardanelle

U.S. House bill may give military recruiters campus access
Funding for colleges not allowing access could be withheld
By Clay Reddick A U.S. House bill that will force universities to give military recruiters the same access to campuses as private companies passed out of the Armed Services Committee last week. If it becomes law, H.R. 3966 will amend the Solomon statute, which allows the government to withhold federal funding from universities that bar military recruiting. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Alabama, who sponsored the bill, said the law will ensure that recruiters have fair access to campuses and expand the amount of funding tied to recruiting.

The Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) is a nonprofit service organization which serves as the binding force and communication hub for its member schools. The purpose, as put forth in its Constitution, is to promote the common interest of all members and to advance their welfare; promote and maintain high scholastic, military and ethical standards in member schools; represent the mutual interests of the member schools before the Department of Defense as well as the general public; foster and extend patriotism and respect for duly constituted authority; and cultivate citizens who love peace and who strive to maintain it. Regular membership is extended to essentially military schools which have a member of the armed services detailed or approved by the Department of Defense, and which maintain good standing in their regional accrediting organization. (An "essentially military" school is defined as an institution with military programs approved by one of the military services and which organizes its student body as a cadet corps, with students habitually in uniform and continually under military discipline while under the jurisdiction of the college or school.) Associate membership may be granted to schools offering a military program but which do not otherwise qualify for regular membership.

  • Do you want to be a teacher?
That's great! The United States will need more highly trained and dedicated new teachers in the next 10 years than ever before. Your sincere interest is a sign of hope for addressing the critical shortage of highly qualified educators. However, such an important and demanding profession deserves careful consideration. Consider where you would like to live. Teacher shortages vary by community, so consider the availability of job openings. Keep in mind local standards of living. Weigh your desired lifestyle against the salaries for beginning teachers in different regions. Consider the various local needs of children and communities. Familiarize yourself thoroughly with the certification requirements and process, exploring all the available routes and training programs available to you. And, perhaps most importantly, be sure to think carefully about what subjects or skills you would like to teach, and why you want to teach them to children and youth.

In order to stave off the closure of any of the Coastal Bend's three military installations — Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Naval Air Station Kingsville and Naval Station Ingleside — local officials have organized the South Texas Military Facilities Task Force.
The task force, composed of leaders from area economic development corporations and current and former political officials, has rallied around the bases by protecting airspace from encroachment, enhancing roads and entryways that lead to bases and hiring consultants both locally and in Washington.

    Nation salutes Ronald Reagan
    By Calvin Woodward
    and Jeff Wilson
    The Associated Press
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — In a final, majestic hail to the chief Friday, the nation bade a lingering goodbye to Ronald Reagan at a stately service in Washington under somber skies and at a hilltop burial ceremony beneath a setting sun in his beloved California.
"He is home now. He is free," Ron Reagan said in his father's eulogy at the burial service. "In his final letter to the American people, Dad wrote, 'I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life.' This evening, he has arrived."
After the burial service, a tearful Nancy Reagan kissed her husband's coffin while holding an American flag. The former first lady was surrounded by her children, who also shed tears and tried to console her.
The flag-draped casket, accompanied by a stoic Nancy Reagan, arrived at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library after a flight from Washington and a slow, 25-mile motorcade from the airport. Hundreds of well-wishers cheered Mrs. Reagan when she left the plane, and crowds along the motorcade route waved flags, held their hands over their hearts and applauded as the hearse passed.
