Pregnancy Services CHISD Gifted and Talented Program STUDENT IDENTIFICATION The Texas Education Code defines a gifted and talented student as “a child or youth who performs at or shows a potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who exhibits high performance capabilities in intellectual, creative, or artistic areas, possesses an unusual capacity for leadership, or excels in a specific academic field.” The identification process will include the following components: Nomination from teacher, principal, counselor, parent, student, or community Evaluation of student data Review of aptitude test scores (verbal and nonverbal) Observation report by teacher Review Committee TEACHER TRAINING Dedicated teachers provide a wide variety of teaching strategies and techniques to meet student needs so that students can effectively and efficiently participate in the learning process. All G/T teachers have at least 30 hours of staff development in the gifted and talented area. Training sessions are offered on an ongoing basis to keep teachers current on new teaching strategies. PARENT AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Parents play an essential role in their child’s education. It is a primary goal of the program to encourage parents and the community to actively participate in the G/T program through parent group meetings and volunteer work.
