Picture this: a perfect school THINKING ABOUT EDUCATION
12:00 AM CDT on Monday, June 9, 2003 By SCOTT PARKS / The Dallas Morning News
Close your eyes and imagine you've ascended to heaven. What would the perfect school look like? Would the classrooms be round, square, L-shaped or triangular? Or would there be no traditional classrooms at all? Would the school be one building with a rooftop garden or several buildings connected by covered walkways lined with displays of student work and native plants? What kind of inspiring symbol or decoration should greet children as they walk onto school grounds each morning? At most schools, kids enter through a nondescript door with the school name above it. The entrance to Noble High School in North Berwick, Maine, features a big plywood "art wall." Students can paint it, nail photos or pictures onto it or decorate it as they see fit. The National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities estimates that U.S. public school districts spent $28.5 billion in 2001 to build 200 million square feet of new or renovated space.
