HOMEPAGE (MY TOOLSHED)
MY GARDEN THE OLD GARDENER
Updated February 12, 2004
You are visitor A separate and distinct area of gardening is that of the Master Gardener - the voluntary arm of the Agricultural Extension Services. As a Past President and member of the Harris County Master Gardener Association (Houston, Texas), I am more familiar with the Texas Master Gardener program but Master Gardening is nationwide in scope and on this page I will be attempting to put it all together. I am often asked the question, "Who and what are 'Master Gardeners'"? The following comments, questions and answers are geared primarily to the Texas Master Gardener Program. However, with slight differences, they also apply to all 50 states since all now have "Master Gardener Programs". They also generally apply in the four Canadian provinces with the program except for the sponsorship of Cooperative Extension agencies. Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people. What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticulture-related information to their communities.

State Agricultural Publications
STATE AGRICULTURAL PUBLICATIONS All state agricultural publications, no matter their format (paper or microfilm) start with the call number S. Each state has its own specific number directly following the letter S. For example California is S39 Alabama is S31, and TEXAS is S117. The numbers following the state number (S117) indicate what kind of publication it is, (curricular, bulletin, or report). For example S31 E4 is a circular from the state of Alabama. The call number S31 E4 No. 262/279 means the circulars numbered 262- 279 are in the volume. So if you are looking for circular no. 272 it would be in S31 E4 No. 262/279. Unfortunately not all of Tech's state agricultural publication holdings are complete. An (*) placed in the holding record indicates that the holdings are incomplete. An * by the state name indicates that microfilm holdings in the east basement should be checked as well. Abbreviations were avoided wherever possible, but in some places they were used. This should not be a limiting factor in the use of this list. But if you are having trouble with abbreviations, the book Agricultural Journal Titles and Abbreviations

A portion of these funds are then matched by the State. The District is governed by a five person Board of Directors who serve without pay. The Directors are elected by Liberty County landowners and serve 4-year terms.
The Board of Directors presently are: Burl Thomas, Chairman, Cleveland
Ford Flurry, Vice Chairman, Dayton
