Welcome to SBTexas.com, the online home of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention. Founded in November of 1998, the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention established missions and evangelism as the major emphasis. Our doctrinal foundation is based on a belief in the inerrancy of Scripture, the relational aspect of the first person of the Godhead as Father, exclusivity of salvation in Jesus Christ, and the primacy of the local church. The SBTC seeks to give vision and strategy for reaching Texas with the gospel of Jesus Christ. New church starts in unevangelized areas of Texas are our priority. The SBTC facilitates the financial cooperation and strategic planning of theologically conservative Southern Baptist Churches in a cooperative effort of carrying out the Great Commission in Texas and around the world. A message from the SBTC Executive Director Site is under construction, please check with us each week for new and exciting, events and features. ADVENTIST CHURCHES. The Adventist movement, which developed from a schism in the religious following of William Miller and broke into several different groups, apparently reached Texas in the late 1880s. The town of Keene in Johnson County was established by a group of Seventh-day Adventists in 1893. In 1894 the church members organized Keene Industrial Academy, which became Southwestern Adventist College, and later Southwestern Adventist University. Tenets of the Adventist creed include biblical literalism, the personal and imminent second advent of Christ on earth, and the celebration of Saturday as the Sabbath. The church stresses promotion through education, evangelism, and publication. In 1995 the Texas Conference employed 120 pastoral and church workers. In addition, the conference operated forty-five elementary schools, four secondary schools, and Southwestern Adventist College ( see ADVENTIST SCHOOLS). The conference operated five medical institutions-Huguley Memorial Medical Center, Fort Worth; Willow Creek Psychiatric, Arlington; Metroplex Hospital, Killeen; Rollins Brook Community Hospital, Lampasas; and Central Texas Medical Center, San Marcos. It also operated an ambulance service in San Antonio. More than 100 physicians and dentists operated self-supporting clinics as officials of the Seventh-day Adventist Medical and Dental Association. In 2000 Texas Seventh-day Adventists belonged to four different conferences. Geographically, most of Texas lay within the Texas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, with its headquarters in Alvarado, near Fort Worth; part of northwestern Texas lay within the Texaco Conference; Bowie County was part of the Arkansas-Louisiana Conference; and African-American Seventh-day Adventists belonged to the Southwestern Region Conference. In 2000 Texas Seventh-day Adventists had 303 churches and 46,128 members.

Lesson 46 Early churches In texas. Rev. GW Freeman, Bishop of Arkansas, visited the churches of texas, and continued his visits annually for several years.
http://www.2020site.org/texas/lesson46.html
Lesson 46: Early Churches In Texas
In a previous lesson it will be seen that the Methodist Church sent the largest number of clergymen, in early times, to Texas. In the year 1838, the Rev. Caleb S. Ives, of the Protestant Episcopal Church, arrived at Matagorda, where he collected a congregation, established a school, and built a church. He continued to labor until 1849, when he died. In the fall of 1838, the Rev. R. M. Chapman, of the same church, came to Houston, and organized a parish. In 1840, he was succeeded by the Rev. H. B. Godwin. In the spring of 1840, the Rt. Rev. Leonidas Polk (now General Polk of the Confederate army) visited and explored the country between the Trinity and the Colorado. In 1844, the Rt. Rev. G. W. Freeman, Bishop of Arkansas, visited the churches of Texas, and continued his visits annually for several years. In 1841, the Rev. B. Eaton was sent out as a missionary to Galveston and Houston. On the 1st of January, 1849, a separate Diocese was organized for Texas, with six clergymen. Since that time the Episcopal Church has continued to grow both in numbers and influence. The Presbyterian church was not among the pioneer churches in Texas. About the year 1838, the Rev. Hugh Wilson arrived in the new Republic. He was probably the first Presbyterian minister who settled in Texas. He organized a Presbyterian Church in San Antonio shortly after his arrival, and in the year following established one at Independence. He was a laborious and useful man, and will always stand high among the first ministers of the Gospel in Texas. The Rev. John McCulloch came to Galveston about the same time, and gathered a congregation and founded a Sabbath-School, under many disadvantages. The state of morals and religion in the Island City at that time was not very favorable to the efforts of the young missionary.

Black Churches in Texas
A Guide to Historic Congregations
by Clyde McQueen Introduction by William E. Montgomery
“. . . makes an important contribution based primarily upon oral history interviews, on-site observations, and photographs. There is no competing book that covers the same material.”—Alwyn Barr, Texas Tech University
Churches play a vital role in African American culture, and not just as houses of worship. They also stand at the center of the political, educational, and social lives of black Americans. Clyde McQueen’s interdenominational inventory of black churches surveys 375 churches organized between 1850 and 1886 and found in an area extending from present-day I-35 east to Louisiana and from the Red River to the Gulf of Mexico, which were the regions of Texas where African Americans settled during the period studied. Many of these churches were, ironically, organized by people who professed to be Christians yet deigned to own other human beings. A number of the pioneer black preachers were taught to read and write by slave owners. McQueen’s research shows how these churches nonetheless became thriving centers of religion, independent civic and social life, and freedom. McQueen provides for each congregation the year it was organized, the county and town where it is located, an address or directions for finding it, and any other history available. All of this is based on information McQueen gathered from interviews, church bulletins, special church programs, historical markers, and building cornerstones.
