    · TMI was established as "West Texas School for Boys" in 1893 by the Right Reverend James Steptoe Johnston, D.D., the second bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. The name was soon changed to "West Texas Military Academy" (WTMA), and graduates referred to their Alma Mater as simply "West Texas" for decades. It has been said that TMI was the "outstanding monument" to Bishop Johnston's episcopate. Our great founder took an abiding personal interest in the school until the day he died (November 4, 1924). Bishop Johnston was an "ecumenist" at heart and never thought his school the exclusive preserve of Episcopalians, though he did hope to use WTMA to prepare future leaders for the Church. and premier academics would be pursued with equal vigor. Burleson was Rector for seven years (1893-1900). The ideals of the school have not substantially changed since his day. Reminiscences (1964) that his Alma Mater is where he developed "a desire to know, a seeking for the reason why, a search for the truth..." MacArthur gained an appointment to the United States Military Academy in 1898, and the rest is an important part of American and world history.

Founder-Acarya of the Hare Krishna Movement In October 2001, 91 plaintiffs in their late 20s and early 30s filed a four hundred million dollar lawsuit in a Texas district court against more than a dozen Hare Krishna temples and organizations and many former leaders of the movement. The suit alleges that horrendous sexual and physical abuse occurred in at least eight of 11 Hare Krishna boarding schools in the 1970s and '80s. Amy Engeler (My Generation Magazine/July 2002) The appalled movement elders, who had learned of the abuse five years earlier, did not dispute the claims. But they argued that since the boarding schools were now closed (some because of the abuse, some because they were too costly to run), it would be unfair to force the movement to sell off major assets in order to placate the young people over events that had taken place 20 or 30 years ago. Instead, the Krishnas announced in February that the temples named in the suit would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This would effectively stop the legal proceeding. Instead of using their limited resources to fight the suit, the Krishnas could establish a fund for the children who'd suffered. The victims of the abuse were undeterred, unwilling to paper over the deep rift that had formed between the generations.

In 1990, members of the Lower Elwha Klallam American Indian tribe in northwest Washington planned a celebration as part of the state's centennial.
But they soon realized that very few members could sing traditional songs and relate tribal legends and folklore in Klallam, the tribe's language. With only eight native speakers all in their 70s or older Klallam was a dying language.
Today, however, Klallam is taught in several elementary schools in Port Angeles, Wash., near the reservation of the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe. In addition, students at Port Angeles High School may take Klallam for foreign language credit thanks to the efforts of Timothy Montler, UNT professor of English.
Montler says it's rewarding to see the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Klallam tribal elders learn the native language of their ancestors after being raised to speak English.
"They are realizing how important it is to have a strong identity, and language is the most obvious emblem of social identity," he says.

School webmasters are a natural online community and we have the Internet to help us collaborate on our successes and failures around the world. We should be able to share some ideas that will help our schools. This page has two features: The discussion bulletin board / forum is in a question and answer format. You post a question (it doesn't really have to be a question). You post an answer (it doesn't really have to be an answer either.) You can post in HTML if you want to include links. If you want to be notified of new bulletin board postings, you can add an email alert. An alert will also allow you to follow the discussions by email. Click here to add an alert. Q: Are boarding schools for abused kids preferable to foster care?
Yes: Boarding schools for neglected children are needed in addition to foster care.
    By Heidi Goldsmith
Where there is high-quality foster care available, and where siblings can remain together, foster care may be best for some children, especially younger children, until and if parents can treat their children with the love and care they deserve. But foster care alone is insufficient. There needs to be additional options for neglected children, including making them more quickly available for adoption, as federal legislation passed in 1998 mandates. Boarding schools need to be available for other children, particularly for children age 9 and older who are less likely to be adopted or selected in foster care and for whom peers are extremely important. There needs to be an array of choices for neglected children. The option of boarding schools for disadvantaged children and youth is gaining popularity across the country.
The reality is there aren't nearly enough foster families for the more than 550,000 children currently in the foster-care system. The number of children is increasing, and the supply of families is decreasing. There also are problems with the foster care that exists. Many parents going through hard times permanently postpone improving their own lives because they fear losing their children to the foster-care system while they get their own lives in order. Some foster parents are inappropriate, to say the least. In many areas, the foster-care system itself is in shambles. Time magazine's Nov. 13 cover story chronicled the sorry state of foster care in the United States. The article claims, "Often these (children) are held hostage to abuse and neglect, to bureaucratic foul-ups and carelessness, condemned to futures in which dreams cannot come true."

CONCRETE COLLEGE . The first school in Concrete, DeWitt County, was conducted by James Norman Smith, qv who had taught President James K. Polk in his native state of Tennessee. What developed after legislative charters in 1856 and 1873 was a typical nineteenth-century rural college. Dr. Robert Peebles qv and other pioneer Concrete settlers sponsored and lobbied for the school, the administration of which was entrusted under the charter of 1856 to J. M. Baker, F. M. Taylor, Josh Stevens, J. R. North, and Francis J. Lynch. qv Rev. John Van Epps Covey qv began teaching in the community about 1864, and by the mid-1870s a ten-acre campus had taken shape along Coon Hollow. The main building measured 150 by fifty feet, with a kitchen and dining room attached. Coeds shared the stone house of the Covey family, and the male students were assigned to more primitive, two-room frame buildings. Covey's curriculum favored the classics and business. Music and penmanship were offered, and farming techniques were taught in a cultivated area adjacent to the college. More than a dozen instructors taught an annual average of perhaps 100 students during the twenty-year existence of the college. Rev. Woodlief Thomas, vice president of the institution, and Professor J. D. Bradfors saw to it that Hebrew, Greek, and Latin fundamentals were covered; Professor Grothus taught German; professors Hueber, Woolsey, and Bonney conducted classes in business and commerce; Misses Anna Stell and Adlia Debery taught the students of the primary school (some pupils were admitted before the age of twelve), and Mrs. Eisenmeyer and Miss Tunn molded the social amenities in the "ladies department." Mrs. Covey taught sewing, and musical talents were developed by professors Young and Fuchs.

MARY ALLEN JUNIOR COLLEGE . Mary Allen Junior College was in Crockett, Houston County, Texas. The school was named Crockett Presbyterian Church Colored Sabbath School from 1871 to 1875, Moffatt Parochial School from 1875 to 1885, and Mary Allen Seminary from 1886 to 1933. In 1871, the first year of his pastorate in Crockett, Rev. Samuel Fisher Tenney qv Rev. J. B. Smith was commissioned to take charge of the new seminary, which opened on January 15, 1886. Mary Allen Hall was completed on October 1, 1887, at a cost of $20,000, including furnishings. The school began as a day and boarding school offering courses at the primary, elementary, high school, and teacher-training levels for girls only. The seminary published its first catalogue in 1887; Mary Allen Hall, a four-story brick structure with basement, still stood in 1990. Citizens of Crockett added twelve additional acres to the original campus. In 1889, the school acquired 300 acres of land adjacent to the campus, and Grace McMillan Hall was completed. These advances were made possible by gifts from northern donors. In 1890 the school listed eight teachers in addition to Reverend and Mrs. Smith and 211 students. Smith resigned in 1910. qv prevented the Texas legislature from acting on the proposal, Mary Allen Junior College was closed, and the property was sold. Student records were eventually transferred to Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina. The Texas school reopened in 1944 under the control of the Missionary Baptist Convention of Texas and was closed in September 1972.
