A new Directory Structure for TeX Files
Introduction
TeX is a powerful, flexible typesetting system used by tens of thousands of people around the world. It is extremely portable and runs on virtually all operating systems. One unfortunate side effect of TeX's flexibility, however, is that there has been no single ``right'' way to install it. This has resulted in many sites having different installed arrangements. A working group of specialists of the TeX world was created in 1994, and it produced recently a proposal (for a complete description see TUGboat 16 f (16), pages 401-413, or in electronic form , whose main points and effects for the CERN setup are the subject of this article. As a first principle, the TeX Directory Structure (TDS) setup has been designed to work on all modern systems, in particular it copes with MacOS, ms-dos, os/2, Unix, vms, and Windows (3.x, 95, and nt). The same file base can thus be used on multiple platforms simultaneously.
Top-level directories
The directories under the TEXMF root (at CERN we have chosen a gnu-compatible /usr/local/share/texmf root directory) identify the major components of a TeX system.

TeX is a powerfull, but not always user-friendly typesetting system. However, the power it provides (for example, the best text justification system yet, beating any word processor or DTP system today) makes it the tool of choice for typesetting everything from busyness cards and letters to manuals and books. International Workshop on Hybrid and Real-Time Systems Grenoble, France, March 26-28, 1997
The focus of this workshop is on mathematical methods for the rigorous and systematic design and analysis of hybrid systems. A hybrid system consists of digital devices that interact with analog environments. Driven by rapid advances in digital controller technology, hybrid systems are objects of investigation of increasing relevance and importance. The emerging area of hybrid systems research lies at the crossroads of computer science and control theory: computer science contributes expertise on the digital aspects of a hybrid system, and control theory contributes expertise on the analog aspects. Since the two research communities speak largely different languages, and employ largely different methods, it was the purpose of the workshop to bring together researchers from both computer science and control theory. This workshop, sponsored by the European Community Esprit program under research grant HYBRID EC-US-043, was preceded by several formal and informal meetings, at Ithaca, New York (1991, 1994, 1996), Lyngby, Denmark (1992), Boston, Massachusetts (1993), Grenoble, France (1995) and New Brunswick, New Jersey (1995). The three-day workshop will feature 2 tutorial surveys, 5 invited presentations and 31 contributed papers (22 regular and 9 short), which were refereed and selected by the program committee before the workshop. Program Wednesday, 26/3/97

Inverse Literate Programming
What is it?
To begin with the non-inverse approach, Literate Programming means generating both program documentation and source code from one `meta-source' file; a good example for literate programming is WEB. A WEB file is broken down by a `compilation' process into a TeX file containing the program's documentation and a Pascal or C file containing the program's source code (among providing the poor Pascal programmers with the benefits of a textual preprocessor). Alas, inverse literate programmming works a little bit the other way round: It takes a source code and generates a TeX documentation for it. I developed this strange looking way of processing `the other way round' w.r.t. Literate Programming because my diploma thesis supervisor raised the request to make a good-looking manual for my diploma thesis at the very end of programming around 500 KBytes of LISP code; so I thought it would be a good idea to use the nice syntax, structuring and its regular treatment of documentating items inherent to the LISP language to generate a manual right from the source code itself, especially because LISP programmers are encouraged to document their `products' directly in the source code.
A package for Inverse Literate Programming
The package lisp-doc can be used for generating semi-automated documentation from LISP source code. It is `only' a spin-off product of my

In much the same way that General Francisco Franco is still dead, volume 4 ( Combinatorial Algorithms ) of Donald Knuth's projected seven-volume Art of Computer Programming is still not out. Neither are volumes 5 ( Syntactical Algorithms Theory of Languages ), or 7 ( Compilers
DDJ readers are probably familiar with the reason why: Knuth has been on a ten-year detour from the Art of Computer Programming , working in the field of computer typesetting (TeX) and typography (METAFONT). In addition to producing the TeX and METAFONT software itself, Knuth has used this software to produce an attractive five-volume series, Computers and Typesetting , that includes not only the documentation for TeX and METAFONT, but also their source code.
What DDJ readers may not be familiar with is that this source code is written in a programming language called WEB. But when I say "written," I really do mean written: the source code, and the written description of it, are one and the same. WEB is a language, quite similar to Pascal (there's also CWEB, which is quite similar to C), which makes it possible to merge the executable source for a system with its description. More importantly, it allows you to construct and present the source in an order which makes "psychological" sense. Using such a system, software "authors" really do become authors, concerned with writing and presenting code in a way that makes sense, not so much to the compiler, but to the reader.

What is TeX?
TeX is a typesetting system written by Donald E. Knuth, who says in the Preface to his book on TeX (see TeX-related books ) that it is `` intended for the creation of beautiful books-and especially for books that contain a lot of mathematics Knuth developed a system of `literate programming' to write TeX, and he provides the literate (WEB) source of TeX free of charge, together with tools for processing the web source into something that can be compiled and something that can be printed; there's never any mystery about what TeX does. Furthermore, the WEB system provides mechanisms to port TeX to new operating systems and computers; in order that one may have some confidence in the ports, Knuth supplied a test by means of which one may judge the fidelity of a TeX system. TeX and its documents are therefore highly portable. TeX is a macro processor, and offers its users a powerful programming capability. For this reason, TeX on its own is a pretty difficult beast to deal with, so Knuth provided a package of macros for use with TeX called

There are currently many different programming languages being used on the Web. Each one has its own particular strengths and weaknesses. A programming language should both provide means to describe primitive data and procedures and means to combine and abstract those into more complex ones. Programming is used on Web sites to add intelligence and increased interactivity.
Mediavue uses each of these programming languages in the areas where they are most applicable. Click here to learn more about MediaVue's computer programming languages or click here to learn more about Web programming languages
