MAT B30: GEOMETRY I
This package demonstrates that any isometry of the Euclidean plane is the product of at most 3 reflections. It consists of a Mathematica source file, 2DIsometries.m, and two text files, 2DIsometries.eg and Exercise1.

This package allows one to study the isometries of the cube (or octahedron) and the dodecahedron (or icosahedron). In the directory README are text files explaining how to use the package. The exercises in Symmetries.ex aim to show graphically that the symmetry group of the cube is isomorphic to S and of the dodecahedron to A

Tutorials
In the lab manual there are five tutorials which show how Mathematica can be used in 2- and 3-dimensional Euclidean geometry. The directory contains source files for the tutorials.

Frieze Game
The Frieze game lets you practise identifying the symmetry groups of frieze patterns.

Wallpaper Game
The Wallpaper game lets you practise identifying the symmetry groups of wallpaper patterns, ie. tessalations of the Euclidean plane. The text file Wallpaper.eg explains how to run it.

Welcome!
The following activities are designed to be taught independently as well as together for a more comprehensive understanding of Optical Illusions. I hope they meet with the needs of any teacher who is interested finding new ways to integrate disciplines within curriculum lesson plans. All of these activities are taught by Visual Arts teachers Judith Keenan and Susan Petrarca to the general population of students at West Warwick High School. We see these students as the future generation of art appreciators.
The "student outcomes" of this lesson are as follows:
-Students will become familiar with the history of Illusion in the arts and how it has influenced the way artist create images today.
- Students will realize how math and art are integrated when creating visual images.
-Students will acquire an appreciation for how 2D patterns and color association affect their visual perception
-Students will acquire tech skills on the computer that will enable them to create basic designs in a draw program.

PHILOSOPHY The school district acknowledges the responsibility to provide services that meet the needs of all students to develop their potential. Highly capable students have special needs, as a result of a wide range of abilities and talents. The school is committed to providing these students with a learning environment, flexible enough to allow diversity of options in order to maximize their potential. The school will provide a program that is qualitatively differentiated from the regular program, varied in depth, breadth, complexity and pace. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES PROGRAM GOAL The Gifted and Talented Program will provide in-service and training for staff members, parents, and community members. Objective A To provide a well thought out and planned system of on-going inservice training that takes into account the needs of those receiving the training. Guidelines: Collaborative teaching. Objective B To provide training for staff members so that skills are developed in interventions, adaptions, and strategies for gifted/high ability students. Guidelines: Particular attention should be given to: Use of cross-disciplinary teaching.

http://eduscapes.com/arch/cssex5.html
Tessalations are Great
Maurits Escher was always referred to by his parents as Mauk. He was brought up by his father, George Escher, who was a civil engineer, and his second wife Sarah who was the daughter of a government minister. He lived with his four older brothers, Arnold, Johan, Berend, and Edmond. Maurits attended both elementary and secondary school in Arnhem between 1912 and 1918, where he failed to shine in many of his subjects, but exhibited an early interest in both music and carpentry. People expressed the opinion that he possessed a mathematical brain but he never excelled in the subject at any stage during his schooling and treated the subject with some considerable unease. He wrote [7]:- At high school in Arnhem, I was extremely poor at arithmetic and algebra because I had, and still have, great difficulty with the abstractions of numbers and letters. When, later, in stereometry [solid geometry], an appeal was made to my imagination, it went a bit better, but in school I never excelled in that subject. But our path through life can take strange turns. Early reports detailed his methodological approach to life which was taken to be an unconscious reaction to his engineering family upbringing. As a child, Maurits always had an intensely creative side and an 'acute sense of wonder'. He often claimed to see shapes that he could relate to in the clouds.

To develop a marketable Game System for the AMIGA PC (as well as other PCs with decent sound and graphics) which is inspired by the Book "Calculator Saturnalia" by Pask et. al. (Wildwood House, U.K., 1980 and Vintage Books, N.Y. 1981). The inspiration may use the original story (as in that book or in Pask's Micro-Musical "The Catastrophe Girls"), or a story similar in intent and tone. It will certainly be modelled on Pask's two-level structuring of the Book and of his instructional systems as described in Pask's many papers and books.

Dear Parents, Students and Community Members: We are now down to the final quarter of the school year! By checking out the extensive Calendar of Events in this newsletter, one can see the remaining weeks of the 2003-2004 school year will be very busy, exciting and hopefully memorable for Monroe student's and their families.
Monroe's staff and parents will honor and recognize our terrific students for their vast accomplishments during this school year by holding two Monroe Honor Nights. Seventh graders will be honored on Tuesday, May 18 and Eighth graders will be honored on Monday, May 17. Both events will be held in the Monroe gymnasium beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Monroe staff is pleased with the pride and effort students took in taking the California Achievement tests. We are extremely hopeful that our scores will improve.
During the remaining weeks of school, please encourage your child to stay focused on school performance. We want this fourth quarter to be an enjoyable and productive quarter for your son or daughter both academically and socially.
    Sincerely

Description: Math Workshop is a very fun and interactive software which features seven different activities. This particular software is more of a teaching tool that introduces and reinforces math skills. In these activities students will face a wide variety of math concepts and processes such as: addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, equivalencies, estimation, fractions, logic, creative problem solving, geometry, and spatial relations. Each of the seven activities provide multiple difficulty levels and are full of wonderful animation and sounds. The narrator of this software is a little girl whose name is Poly Gonzles. I like the fact that this software didn't go the stereotypical route of using a male figure. The Math Workshop pack also includes a teacher's guide which provides teachers with curriculum matrix, annotated bibliography, blackline masters, and technical tips. It also includes fifteen lesson plans, a comprehensive user's guide, and a bonus resource which provides overhead rainbow fraction tiles.

UNITS - Grades 6 - 8 OVERVIEW Mathematics is a language we use to identify, describe and investigate the patterns and challenges of everyday living. It helps us to understand the events that have occurred and to predict and prepare for events to come so that we can more fully understand our world and more successfully live in it. Mathematics encompasses arithmetic, measurement, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, probability and other fields. It deals with numbers, quantities, shapes and data, as well as numerical relationships and operations. Confronting, understanding and solving problems is at the heart of mathematics. Mathematics is much more than a collection of concepts and skills; it is a way of approaching new challenges through investigating, reasoning, visualizing and problem solving with the goal of communicating to others the relationships observed and problems solved. Last Metalesson Well, our last day of math class has arrived very quickly. We each presented our unit lessons and did an introductary lesson on to show the other groups. We did our math disaster unit and it was a huge hit! I really liked the geometry unit that Jake's group did as well as the tessalations activity. This semester in math was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed Tim as our intructor. I learned how to make math real-life, hands on, and meaningful. I am sad to have to leave this class. As a cohort, we all enjoyed working and learning together in this particular class. It was a relaxed environment, yet we worked efficiently and effectively.
