Col. John Alexander: How the war on terrorism will be fought
During Colonel John Alexander's varied career with the United States Army, he held key positions in special operations and intelligence. In the '60s, Dr. Alexander commanded Special Forces "A" Teams in Vietnam and Thailand. He is a leading advocate for the development of non-lethal weapons. CNN: Welcome to CNN.com Newsroom, Col. John Alexander. We are pleased to have you with us today. COL. JOHN ALEXANDER: It's a great pleasure to be here. I think this is a very trying time, and a time when we need to get a lot of accurate information out. CNN: You have a particular interest in non-lethal weapons. Could you describe what these are and how they might be used in the war on terrorism? ALEXANDER: Non-lethal weapons comprise a very broad category, and they can include chemical, electromagnetic, low-kinetic impact, acoustic, and some will even include information warfare. In the war against terrorism, I think they will be more important than ever before. Now, we should not be looking for the use of non-lethal weapons in Afghanistan. The war against terrorism is a very broad concept, and one that many in the media are missing. The majority of the war will be fought in the shadows and much will take place in major metro areas, such as London, Paris, Cairo, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, etc. The action there will be to root out terrorist cells.

THERE HAS NOT BEEN A TERRORIST
attack on U.S. soil since the fall of 2001. Yet the possibility is ever-present and guides much of what we do as a society. The "war on terrorism" is no mere metaphor; it has led us to two all-too-real wars in less than two years. At home, we live with periodic "orange alerts" and checkpoints.
While much has changed since Sept. 11, the "war on terrorism" debate boils down to a single theme: What are Americans willing to do? How much are we willing to spend in money, prestige, rights, lives? What bargains are we willing to make?
A great deal has already been accomplished. ( click here to continue
Biological and chemical weapons are cheap, hard to trace and potentially devastating, which is why terrorists find them so appealing. Public Agenda's overview on bioterrorism examines the history of these weapons and America's emergency preparedness efforts to deal with a potential attack.

Ashcroft cites 'monumental progress' in U.S. war on terrorism
Attorney General John Ashcroft was interviewed Wednesday by the Associated Press. Story Tools WASHINGTON (AP) Citizens jittery over the nation's high alert status should know that progress is being made in the war on terror, Attorney General John Ashcroft said Wednesday. Seven terrorist suspects have been caught through new border security measures and 104 people convicted of terror-related charges, he said in an interview with The Associated Press. Successful prosecutions have led to cooperation from defendants, providing information that has "disrupted groups of individuals who were working together to assist in terrorism or perhaps commit acts of terrorism," Ashcroft said. "Prevention is our number one priority. It is more important than prosecution," he said. "But very frequently these priorities do not compete, they complement. In many instances prosecution has been a real aid to our prevention effort by helping generate valuable intelligence." As Ashcroft spoke in his office at Justice Department headquarters, the United States remained on high alert for potential terrorism amid dire warnings from FBI Director Robert Mueller and CIA Director George J. Tenet about a possibly imminent large-scale attack.

Turkey commits troops to war on terrorism
ISTANBUL, Turkey (CNN) Turkish soldiers will soon join a growing international contingent of troops in Afghanistan involved in the U.S.-led war on terrorism, Operation Enduring Freedom, Turkish military sources said Thursday. Initially, 12 soldiers will be sent in an observational role, and a total deployment of 261 troops is expected by the end of January. The commitment of forces by the Turks is being called open-ended. The Turkish soldiers will join British and French forces already deployed in Afghanistan. Earlier this week, the Canadian minister of national defense announced the commitment of about 750 soldiers to the coalition campaign against terrorism and said they will be deployed in Kandahar. OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) Global warming poses a greater long-term threat to humanity than terrorism because it could force hundreds of millions from their homes and trigger an economic catastrophe, Canadian Environment Minister David Anderson said. "Current preoccupation is with terrorism, but in the long term climate change will outweigh terrorism as an issue for the international community," he said. "Terrorism will come and go, it has in the past...and it's very important. But climate change is going to make some very fundamental changes to human existence on the planet." Anderson said Canada would need to cut its emissions of greenhouse gases by 60 percent of 1990 levels by 2050. Canada has ratified the Kyoto protocol on climate change, which calls for a 6 percent cut from 1990 levels by 2012.

Terrorist Attacks and Children
A National Center for PTSD Fact Sheet By Jessica Hamblen, Ph.D.
When terrorist attacks occur in this country, our children may witness these events by watching TV, hearing people talk at school, hearing people in public places discuss the events, etc. For instance, the World Trade Center attacks and the Oklahoma City bombing received widespread attention and media coverage that many children were exposed to. But how should we speak to our children about these events when they occur? Should we shield them from such horrors or talk openly about them? How can we help children make sense of a tragedy that we ourselves cannot understand? How will children react? How can we help our children recover? Fortunately, there have been few terrorist attacks in the United States. One consequence of this is that there is little empirical research to help us answer the above questions. Information from related events can be used to provide answers.

Pakistan leaders vote to help fight terrorism
On Saturday, Musharraf said Pakistan would "help the international community fight terrorism." ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) As President Bush prepared to huddle again with his national security advisers, the government of Pakistan signaled Saturday it is willing to fulfill its pledge to "fully cooperate" with the United States in its war against those responsible for the World Trade Center and Pentagon terror attacks. During a meeting with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, the Pakistani cabinet and security council voted unanimously to "help the international community fight terrorism." A spokesman said the government would immediately "hold consultations with the Pakistani people" to build a consensus for the decision. The United States has given the Pakistan government a "wish list" of actions it wants Pakistan to take. Included on that list is allowing, if requested, U.S. warplanes access to Pakistani airspace. "We are responding to the call of the international community in helping to see what we can do," said the Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Maleeha Lodhi. "We want to try to use the diplomatic option before more extreme ways to deal with the situation."

A National Tragedy: Helping Children Cope
Tips for Parents and Teachers
The recent tragic acts of terrorism are unprecedented in the American experience.  Children, like many people, may be confused or frightened by the news and will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react.  Parents and school personnel can help children cope first and foremost by establishing a sense of safety and security. As the nation learns more about what happened and why, adults can continue to help children work through their emotions and perhaps even use the process as a learning experience. All Adults Should: Model calm and control .  Children take their emotional cues from the significant adults in their lives. Avoid appearing anxious or frightened. Reassure children that they are safe and so are the other important adults in their lives. Explain that these buildings were targeted for their symbolism and that schools, neighborhoods, and regular office buildings are not at risk.
