The destruction of New York City's World Trade Center and the attack on the Pentagon in Washington raise innumerable questions that can be dealt with in the classroom. Although the most recent terrorist attacks have the greatest impact on America, they are part of a long and tragic history of terrorism that has been developing around the globe for decades. Constitutional Rights Foundation has prepared "America Responds to Terrorism," " War in Iraq ," and " Reflecting on September 11 ," a series of online lessons and resources designed for classroom use. We will continue to add lessons on issues related to these troubling times. We at CRF hope you find these resources useful during this time of national crisis. Conversational Cheap Shots
All of the techniques listed in this document have actually been witnessed, told to us by someone else, or dreamed up. They are described in first person for clarity of motive. The intent of detailing and naming these insidious tactics is so that the reader may AVOID USING THEM, to quickly recognize if someone else is using them, and for fun. There is much humor in the way people (consciously or unconsciously) conversationally cheat. It is hoped that exposing these tactics will help muzzle the growing abuse in our conversational landscape. Give copies to both perpetrators and victims (only NOT for profit use). The examples are overblown in an attempt to be both clear and funny. Use your imagination to think of how you (perish the thought) and others have used these techniques in the past. They have been grouped by major category, with the best (worst!) saved for last. First, we have the Ad Hominem Variants where you attack the person as a way to avoid truth, science, or logic which might otherwise prove you wrong. Next are the Sleight of Mind Fallacies , which act as "mental magic" to make sure the unwanted subject disappears. Then, we move on to

Hart:'This is not the end of the age of terrorism'
(CNN) In the wake of the September 11 attacks, there are more concerns about the possibility of new acts of terrorism on U.S. soil. Former U.S. Sen. Gary Hart, who co-chaired a commission on national security in the 21st century, believes there is reason to be concerned. CNN anchor Bill Hemmer spoke Wednesday morning with Hart about the possibility of future terrorist attacks. HEMMER: You made a speech last night at Yale, talking about the concern that you have for the possibility, again I want to underline that the possibility of new attacks. What gives you reason to think that? HART: I have no special information. What my instincts are basically shaped and formed by (is) the information we collected as members of this commission over the last two and a half years. I think the intelligence estimates and briefings we received from terrorism and counter-terrorism experts, led me at least, to believe that this is not the end of the age of terrorism, but perhaps just the beginning. But I have no special information.

Terrorism in Palestine
  • In the past 18 months, to 1st May, 2002, Israeli terrorists have killed approximately 1,200, Palestinians, (now probably 1,600 - 1,800, up to 12th May). They have used American tanks, American helicopter gunships, American warplanes, and American missiles against civilians.
In the same period, in response to the Israeli killings, Palestinian suicide bombers have killed approximately 200 Israelis. In Jenin the Israeli army used bulldozers to crush house in which civilians sheltered, the Israelis used civilians as human shields when they attacked Palestinians and checked for booby traps. These acts fall within the definition of war crimes. Israel has developed weapons of mass destruction and has over 200 nuclear weapons, and the USA has done nothing about it. The government of U.S.A. has funded and still funds and arms the Israeli terrorists. This year, 2002, USA government is giving Israel $2,000,000,000 in military aid, that's an awful lot of tanks, helicopter gunships, warplanes, missiles etc.etc., and that's nothing compared the previous years.

Senate looks at children in post-terrorism world
WASHINGTON (CNN) A U.S. Senate subcommittee Friday began to grapple with the traumatic effects of the terrorist attacks of September 11 and the anthrax crisis on the nation's children. "Twenty percent of our population is made up of children, yet children are 100 percent of our future," said Senator Chris Dodd, D-Connecticut, who chairs the Subcommittee on Children and Families. The panel looked at both the psychological and physical impacts that acts of terrorism have on children. Bernard S. Arons, director of the Center for Mental Health Services at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said difficulties children may have sleeping or doing other routine activities should be expected for a time. David Siegrist: The threat from biological terrorism
David Siegrist is a research fellow and the director of studies for the Countering Biological Terrorism program at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. He has been a long-term consultant to the Department of Defense, where he has analyzed a broad range of national security technology issues. He joined the CNN.com chat room from Arlington, VA. CNN: Welcome, David Siegrist, and thank you for being with us today. DAVID SIEGRIST: Thank you. It's my pleasure to be here today. CNN: How much of a threat exists from the use of bioterrorism? SIEGRIST: I think the threat is significant and increasing, especially after the events of last week. I think last week marks a major escalation, and I'm concerned that further escalation can lead to use of biological weapons by terrorists. I think that the terrorists showed that they are not necessarily constrained from causing mass casualties. CHAT PARTICIPANT: What is the biggest threat? Smallpox or anthrax?

Especially when the news provides immediate and graphic details, parents wonder if they should protect their children from the grim reality, explore the topic, or share their personal beliefs. Professionals may wonder how much information to provide or how to help children if they are confused or troubled. And all adults must reconcile the dilemma of advocating non-violence while explaining terrorism and why nations maintain armies and engage in war. • Before the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and the Pentagon, most terrorist incidents in the United States have been bombing attacks, involving detonated and undetonated explosive devices, tear gas and pipe and fire bombs.
The effects of terrorism can vary significantly from loss of life and injuries to property damage and disruptions in services such as electricity, water supply, public transportation and communications.
One way governments attempt to reduce our vulnerability to terrorist incidents is by increasing security at airports and other public facilities. The U.S. government also works with other countries to limit the sources of support for terrorism.
  • U.S. TERRORIST INCIDENTS WHAT IS TERRORISM? Terrorism is the use of force or violence against persons or property in violation of the criminal laws of the United States for purposes of intimidation, coercion or ransom. Terrorists often use threats to create fear among the public, to try to convince citizens that their government is powerless to prevent terrorism, and to get immediate publicity for their causes.
