by Tom Harris and Katherine Neer Table of Contents Introduction to Terrorism Creating Terror International Terrorism Domestic U.S. Terrorists Lots More Information When the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, the United States government knew exactly who was responsible for the offensive and had a clear understanding of their intentions. Japan launched the strike as a deliberate act of war. Like Pearl Harbor, the September 11 surprise attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon has had a devastating effect on Americans and their allies all around the world. But unlike Pearl Harbor, officials don't know for sure who is responsible. The United States feels like it is at war, but its citizens don't know who they're fighting against. A lot of the evidence that has come out points to Osama bin Laden as the mastermind behind these acts of terrorism. But there are a number of other terrorist groups who might mount such a strike. The men and women of the FBI join the nation in mourning the death of President Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) Director Mueller testifies before the 9-11 Commission on the issue of whether to create a new MI5-style intelligence agency: "Splitting the law enforcement and the intel functions would leave both agencies fighting the war on terrorism with one hand tied behind their backs." INTELLIGENCE REFORM
FBI Intelligence Chief Maureen Baginski Details Proposed Intelligence Directorate Why are you proposing an Intelligence Directorate inside the FBI? Ms. Baginski: It's the next logical step in improving our intelligence capabilities. If you think about it, we started creating a "service within a service" right after 9/11. In a disciplined way, we've gone from building our intelligence capabilities in counterterrorism and then in the FBI as a whole with a new Office of Intelligence and an Executive Assistant Director for Intelligence. Now, we're moving to the next level with a proposal to create a Directorate with authority over resources. It's something we have to do to better protect the American people. Why is that budget authority so important?

Special Report (CNN) There was no sign that terrorism was involved in NASA's loss of contact with the space shuttle Columbia, Bush administration officials said Saturday. "At this time we have no indication that the mishap was caused by anything or anyone on the ground," NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe said in a news conference Saturday afternoon. President Bush immediately left for the White House to address the crisis, a spokesman said. He was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, where he was briefed on the disappearance by his chief of staff, Andrew Card. "The president has been informed about the situation. We are awaiting more information from NASA at this point," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan. A senior law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that the shuttle was flying at about 200,000 feet above earth when it disappeared well out of range of surface-to-air missiles.

Every civilized nation has a stake in preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction." President George W. Bush, February 11, 2004 Presidential Action The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) poses the most serious danger to the peace of the world. Terrorism tops EU agenda for Spain
Aznar: Keen to press ahead with economic reform By CNN European Political Editor Robin Oakley MADRID, Spain (CNN) Spain has taken over the rotating presidency of the European Union with a clear sense of priorities and a commodious mixed bag of tasks for its six months in the chair. Inevitably some date from the events of September 11. Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar has pledged that fighting terrorism will remain the number one priority. Under Belgium's presidency the EU agreed a common definition of terrorism and a system of Europe-wide arrest warrants. Now Aznar hopes to develop the work of Europe-wide investigative teams and to ensure closer co-operation between judges in the 15 member states. EXTRA INFORMATION In-depth Euro, ready or not

http://www.islamdenouncesterrorism.com/
English Deutsch Francais Turkce Russian Terrorism is a crime against humanity. Islam is a religion that means "peace". In the Koran, the Holy Book of Islam, God commands believers to bring peace and security to the world. The Islamic morality is the cure for terrorism, not the source of it. This book maintains that only love, tolerance and peace can eradicate terrorism and reveals, with quotations from the Qur'an, the New Testament and the Torah, that terrorism is a form of savagery condemned by all divine religions. Throughout their entire lives, everyone is at war with an enemy, the extent of whose strength and influence they perhaps fail to fully comprehend. He constantly invites mankind to commit evil, and many people he uses without them even being aware of it. This most dangerous enemy is the Devil. All forms of terrorist attack are roundly condemned in Islam. In Islam, it is a great sin to kill an innocent person, and anyone who does so will suffer great torment in the Hereafter.

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said on Saturday injustice and inequality were breeding terrorism and violence such as the 2001 Sept. 11 attacks on New York's World Trade Center. "Terrorism will always be born in an unjust world ... Injustice is not only for Third World countries. If there was justice, the Twin Towers would not have collapsed," Khatami said during a developing nations summit in Caracas. Nearly 3,000 people died when hijackers crashed two passenger planes into the World Trade Center in the 2001 attacks. The 110-story twin towers collapsed shortly afterward. The hijackers were linked to Saudi-born Islamic militant Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda group.

COPING WITH TERRORISM
From the American Psychological Association
Terrorism threatens a society by instilling fear and helplessness in its citizens. It seeks to hold a society or government hostage by fear of destruction and harm. When terrorist acts occur, people generally look for ways to cope with the acute stress and trauma. Terrorism evokes a fundamental fear of helplessness. The violent actions are random, unprovoked, and intentional, and often are targeted at defenseless citizens. Trying to cope with the irrational information that is beyond normal comprehension can set off a chain of psychological events culminating in feelings of fear, helplessness, vulnerability, and grief. Who Is Affected? After a terrorist attack, many people are impacted. People who have experienced the trauma often fall into the following categories:
  • Survivors of past traumatic events (e.g. refugees of wars, terrorism, or torture, and survivors of domestic violence, child abuse, or street crime). These individuals may have a heightened sense of vulnerability.

Pakistan leaders vote to help fight terrorism
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) As President Bush prepared to huddle again with his national security advisers, the government of Pakistan signaled Saturday it is willing to fulfill its pledge to "fully cooperate" with the United States in its war against the terrorist responsible for the World Trade Center and Pentagon terror attacks. During a meeting with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf the Pakistani cabinet and security council voted unanimously to "help the international community fight terrorism." A spokesman said the government would immediately "hold consultations with the Pakistani people" to build a consensus for the decision. The United States has given the Pakistan government a "wish list" of actions it wants Pakistan to take. Included on that list is allowing, if requested, U.S. warplanes access to Pakistani airspace. The ruling Taliban government of Afghanistan threatened any neighboring country that allows its soil to be used to help the United States stage an attack on Afghanistan.
