PV Advances To SWAC Men's Tennis Title Match
By PVU Sports Information
Prairie View, a number two seed from the SWAC Western Division, jumped out to an early 1-0 edge after winning the doubles point over Alcorn State, which entered the tournament as the top seed from the eastern division. Prairie View’s number one doubles tandem of Blessing Brunzawabaya and Kudzai Chiridza defeated Alcorn State’s Robert Gates and Roman Levochkin 8-6 in the first doubles match. The Panthers clinched the point when the duo of Xavier Godoy and David Harrera posted an 8-0 victory over Alcorn State’s Tim Verlin and Philip Lwanga.
In singles, the Panthers went back-and-forth with the Braves before pulling out the victory with a strong finish. Recording victories for Prairie View in singles were Harrera (6-4, 6-1), Chiridza (6-0, 6-0) and Amin Memon (3-6, 6-4, 7-5).
Head coach John Cochran was elated with the victory but quickly reminded his team that they have to come out prepared physically and mentally in tomorrow’s championship match against two-time defending champion Southern University.
“We made some adjustments during the match that helped us tremendously,” said Cochran. “The team has put forth a good effort on the court up to this point and I hope it continues tomorrow. Southern is the two-time defending champion so we’ll have to play at our highest level.”

The heart of the Games By Yiorgos Gakis The heart of the 2004 Olympic Games is beating at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA), a complex that will host 9 out of 28 events, but also the two Press Centers: one for the Written and one for the Electronic Press. More than 500.000 people - spectators, athletes, officials, Mass Media, staff, volunteers - will be circulating daily within the OAKA spaces. OLYMPIC STADIUM
The Olympic Stadium is situated at Maroussi, a northern suburb of Athens and it is part
of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA). There will be 75,000 spectators who will attend athletics events, as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The General Secretariat of Sports has scheduled to complete the Stadium's renovation by the end of 2003. ATHENS 2004 and the Ministry of Culture have asked Santiago Calatrava, the well-known architect, to redesign and upgrade OAKA in an innovative and creative way, including the new roof structure for Olympic Stadium. General Secretariat of Sports (GGS), is responsible for the project by the end of June 2004.

4 - Olympic tennis : to be or not to be ? Tennis was withdrawn from the Olympics in 1928 over disputes on the definition of amateurism, and legitimate travelling and training time. The general debate on this issue had enslaved almost all Olympic sports for the next six decades, many of them in constant and visible breach of the IOC's own pedantic regulations. The foot-in-the-door for Samaranch was the acceptance of tennis as a demonstration sport for 1984. Consulting at length with Philippe Chatrier, the French President of the ITF, Samaranch set about driving a hole through the Eligibility Code, the holy grail of Olympic concepts: the acceptance of one of the most conspicuous professional sports for 1988. The objective was to make it possible for the best competitors in the world, from whatever country, to take part in the Games. The IOC Session in 1987 in Istanbul was historic. During the debate on eligibility, 31 members contributed from the floor, a record for such occasions. Many were against, notably Gunther Heinze, a former Stalinist from the GDR. Vital support came from Anita DeFrantz, former bronze medal oarswoman, explaining that in tennis it was necessary to be professional to be the best, and the best should be given the opportunity to share in the Olympic celebration.
