Tip of the Week: Hit the Wall

Brad Gilbert did it when he was trying to break out of a slump in 1983. Evonne Goolagong did it to warm up the morning of her 1980 Wimbledon final with Chris Evert. And just about every other top player has done it often during their formative years. What's their big secret? They all used a practice wall.

Many doubles players treat their partners' service games as holidays. They think that because they're not serving or returning, the pressure is off; if they simply hit the balls that come directly to them, then they're doing enough. But a good doubles player is an active one.

Former French Open champ will be goodwill ambassador
Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday June 18, 2001 1:14 PM LONDON (Reuters) Former French Open champion Michael Chang, whose family hails from China, is to act as a "Goodwill Ambassador" for Beijing's bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympics, bid officials said on Monday. The U.S. player, who is very popular in Asia and once practiced hitting a ball against the Great Wall of China in an advertising campaign, will be part of the bid to bring the Games to the world's most populous country for the first time. Beijing is the favorite to win the International Olympic Committee (IOC) vote in Moscow on July 13 but faces opposition from strong rivals Toronto and Paris. Japan's Osaka and Istanbul, the other cities in the vote, are regarded as outsiders.
