The preceding sections have dealt with the growth of the school and its improvements from time to time as an educational institution. The purpose of this section is to give a rather brief picture of the school as a visitor would find it today. The aspects to be noted include general organization, objectives, administration, the staff, the pupils, methods of instruction, and the curriculum. A sophisticated transportation network takes advantage of Interstate and US Highways linking Lawrence County to markets near and far. Excellent railroads handle freight hauling across the nation. In addition, the Tennessee River - maintained at a constant depth year round by the Tennessee Valley Authority - has many navigable miles that pass through the county, allowing the shipment of goods to eastern and southern seaports. Air transportation in and out of the county is handled by the Industrial Airpark at Courtland. It is served by two 5,000-ft. runways and other facilities including utilities, railroads, and paved roads. The airpark has direct access to US Highway Alternate 72/Highway 20. In addition, the Huntsville International Airport, located 30 miles east of the Industrial Airpark, has four major airlines and the International Cargo Center. A proposed Memphis-to-Atlanta high speed corridor will pass through Lawrence County, connecting it to those two cities. Both are approximately 190 miles from the county. Other cities such as Nashville, Tennessee, which is 145 miles away, and Birmingham, Alabama, 90 miles away, are important commercial centers that conduct extensive business with the county.

60. OIT: Energy Efficiency Tools Go To School
Additional Academic Programs tennessee Tech isn t alone in teaching energy thatcan be replicated at community colleges and vocational schools nationwide.
http://www.oit.doe.gov/bestpractices/energymatters/sum2003_school.shtml
(Summer 2003)
Energy Efficiency Tools Go to School
A variety of energy efficiency tools are making their way into engineering school curricula around the country. Developed with the support of the DOE's Industrial Technologies Program and in partnership with industry associations, these tools are exposing students to energy efficiency best practices techniques that may influence their careers. "Our idea was to make DOE's assessment tools the focal point of the class," said Dr. Glenn T. Cunningham, associate professor of Mechanical Engineering at Tennessee Technological University. Glenn distributed copies of system assessment tools to each of the 22 students enrolled in his energy conversion and conservation class, then set them to work evaluating systems around the Cookeville, Tennessee, campus. Glenn's students used MotorMaster+, the Pump System Assessment Tool, 3E Plus, the Steam System Scoping Tool, and the Steam System Survey Guide in their class work. Later, students formed teams and fanned out across campus to evaluate a variety of systems. One group used an infrared camera to look for degraded insulation in a steam system. Another group used a portable power meter and an ultrasonic flow meter to evaluate pumps. A third group measured voltage levels and speeds of various motors around campus. Data gathered from each effort was fed back into one of the BestPractices assessment tools. For example, in one university building, students found a chilled water pump that was designed to run at 310 gallons per minute and 160 feet of head. The pump was actually operating at 440 gallons per minute and 133 feet of head. "It was overpumping by a large amount," Glenn said. Using the Pump System Assessment Tool, students learned that by adjusting the motor and the pump they could achieve energy savings.
