A Boys' School General Description Mission and Philosophy ... Honor System
Welcome to McCallie School.
Recognized as one of the nation's top college preparatory schools, McCallie was founded in 1905 and is located on the western slope of Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is an all-boys school with boarding students in grades 9 through 12 and day students in grades 6 through 12. It accepts young men with above average to exceptional academic abilities and those students matriculate at some of the best colleges and universities in the country. McCallie graduates are national and regional leaders in business, government, the arts and religion. Today McCallie has an enrollment of 880 and stresses a strong academic orientation along with physical and moral development. It is little wonder that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently called McCallie "one of the leading secondary institutions in the United States."
A Boys' School
Since its founding, McCallie has remained committed to providing an outstanding college preparatory program for boys. Our own experience, as well as independent research, has shown that secondary education within a single-sex environment offers fewer distractions, allows for a greater number of leadership opportunities and promotes a school culture where boys can achieve without reservation. McCallie is a member of the Boys Schools Coalition, which consists of more than 100 boys' schools throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Letter to Gary Cooper - December 13, 2000 December 13, 2000 Mr. Gary Cooper, Chairman
Anderson County Commission
Anderson County Courthouse
Clinton, Tennessee 37716 RE: TCA 37-1-124(b); County Attorney's Prosecution Role Dear Chairman Cooper, The Operations Committee has asked for input with regard to a new job description for the County Attorney. Please see TCA 37-1-124(b), copy enclosed, and a newsclip from The Oak Ridger dated January 20, 1999, where the current County Attorney discussed some options relating to juvenile court aspects of Anderson County's obligations to its youthful offenders. His discussion was incomplete. Prior to creation of the Public Defender system, lawyers were appointed and most often worked pro bono on criminal cases. At that time and still now, it was contemplated that the same principle would apply in juvenile courts both for prosecution and defense purposes. This was appropriate since most cases were uncontested and lawyers were usually not involved. Informal adjustment is always available under TCA 37-1-110 and as the law of the land must not be ignored by the judge. Juvenile Court matters are recognized to be a special category of infraction and are not criminal. Accordingly, the Legislature specifically provided at TCA 37-1-124(b) for appointment of the county attorney, any municipal attorney, or any other attorney to fulfill the prosecution role when necessary and when not pre-empted by the DA.

Letter to Dr. Randy McCoy
March 12, 2002 March 12, 2002 Dr. Randy McCoy, Superintendent
Oak Ridge Schools
304 New York Ave.
Oak Ridge, TN 37830 RE: Neglect of Juvenile Court Cases In Anderson County Dear Superintendent McCoy, On March 6, 2002, a traffic violation came through Juvenile Court in Oak Ridge. The Honorable Tammy Dunn, Oak Ridge City Attorney, agreed to prosecute it. Judge Patricia Hess stated Ms. Dunn could not because it was a "state charge". The language of TCA 37-1-124(b) is clear and unambiguous. According to its ordinary meaning, the district attorney general is not the only person who can represent the State in proceedings on the petition. City, county or school board attorneys, (or any other attorney) may represent the state in such proceedings. When that provision is construed in pari materia with TCA 8-7-106(b) , the district attorney general is not required to appear at any hearing on the merits in juvenile court. Thus, the law anticipates that the district attorney general, being required to manage prosecution resources, may decline to participate and the court is provided with alternative attorneys to present evidence on behalf of the state. Juvenile court is a civil court and an entity of the county, not a criminal court. Rules of Juvenile Procedure, Rule 19

The Bachelor of Music degree is the initial professional collegiate degree in music. Its primary emphasis is the development of the skills, concepts and sensitivity essential to the professional life of a musician. In any of the roles as performer, composer, scholar, or teacher, the professional musician must function as a practitioner who exhibits not only technical competence but also broad knowledge of music literature, sensitivity in musical style, and insight into the role of music in the life of humankind. The School of Music at UT offers the Bachelor of Music degree with concentrations in music education/instrumental; music education/vocal-general/keyboard; music education/vocal-general/vocal; music theory/composition; organ; piano; piano pedagogy and literature; sacred music (organ or voice); strings (violin, viola, cello, string bass); studio music and jazz; woodwinds, brass, percussion instruments; and voice.
Teacher Licensure
The School of Music offers two programs that prepare students to teach music in public schools. The four year program leads to the degree and teaching licensure. The five year program provides for the granting of the degree at the end of four years, with teacher licensure being awarded after a fifth-year, graduate-level internship.

st Century. Once school leaders recognize this connection, an organized approach to using the model to address the barriers to learning and school participation experienced by students seems appropriate and possible. The first step as cited above involves school leaders (administrators and board members) making it part of their formal vision for schools as a place to promote the overall well-being of children and adolescents. The next step is facilitating and supporting opportunities to discuss the barriers to learning and participation faced by students. The School Health Index , developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is an excellent tool to use in beginning these discussions at the individual school level. After bringing people together for this purpose, efforts can then be initiated to organize the coordination of services within the school and community required in addressing those needs of students. To accomplish the first steps, school administrators and school boards must direct resources and set an expectation that there will be a significant focus on the overall school health program. The most effective means to do this appears to be in school improvement planning process and on-going staff development activities of each school and the school system.

STATE OF TENNESSEE, OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL (1988)
Public SchoolsTheories of Origins of LifeCreation ScienceEstablishment Clause
Question:
Whether a teacher in a public school in Tennessee can teach all theories of the origin of life for the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of science instruction? Opinion: It is the opinion of this office that a public school teacher can teach any scientific theory of the origin of life, such as evolution. However, no theory of the origin of life which is religiously based can be taught in the public schools as part of the science curriculum, because its teaching would violate the establishment clause of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Analysis: the establishment clause of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution provides that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...." Through the Fourteenth Amendment, the Untied States Supreme Court has applied the establishment clause to the states. See Cantwell v. Connecticu
