Medical School Curricula with Live Animal Laboratories
download this factsheet Below is a list of U.S. medical schools that still use live animals to teach basic concepts in human physiology, pharmacology, and/or surgery. Two-thirds of all U.S. medical schools, including Harvard, Stanford and Yale, have eliminated these old-fashioned laboratories in favor of modern, cost-effective and humane alternatives. Please write to your local universities and alma mater to express your concerns about these crude exercises. Please note that this list includes only schools that use live animal laboratories to train medical students, and does not refer to basic research that may be conducted at medical schools and universities. http://www.toxicology.mc.vanderbilt.edu/Outreach/coep98
HIGHLIGHTS - 1998 Highlights The Center celebrated over 30 years of environmental and molecular toxicology at Vanderbilt with an Open House. This annual Open House educates the professional community and health professions along with the graduate student body in the advances made in environmental health at the Center. This year, the Open House consisted of several platform presentations by Center Investigators on research performed at the Center along with tours of the laboratories and facilities used by the faculty, staff and graduate students. This symposium also created an opportunity for over 150 students and professors from area colleges and universities to gain knowledge of the science generated and the issues addressed by the Center. The COEP has developed a strong working partnership with the Middle Tennessee Poison Center that allows for joint sponsorship of environmental education programs. The COEP in conjunction with the Poison Center increased its community exposure by presenting a variety of education programs. In 1998, there were more than 250 presentations and activities, which included National Poison Prevention Week, community health and safety fairs, displays on environmental chemicals at the Cumberland Science Museum, and community small group presentations on environmental safety. Through efforts of the COEP, the Poison Center, and area volunteers, more than 200,000 pamphlets and stickers containing information about chemicals, poison prevention, and environmental hazards were distributed throughout Middle Tennessee.
