Healthy children are a major priority of the health department. Well child checkups include physical exams, screening tests and immunizations. Screenings are available to assure normal development and to detect and treat many medical conditions for persons from birth to 21 years of age. The health department strongly recommends regular checkups and makes referrals for medical/dental services to be sure all children are as healthy as they can be. Immunization Shots
Immunizations against polio, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus (lockjaw), measles, mumps, rubella (German measles), hemophilus (meningitis), and hepatitis B are provided for children. Flu and pneumonia immunizations, tetanus-diphtheria boosters, and hepatitis B vaccines are also available to adults for lasting protection against these diseases. Primary Care
In many health departments, medical staff are available for diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, and also provide diagnostic testing such as blood pressure screening and pap smears. Special health counseling is provided as needed. Local health departments participate in TennCare and other insurance programs.

Dairy Cow Health and Metabolic Disease Relative to Nutritional Factors
This NebGuide describes the various implications and effects of dairy cow metabolic problems, their causes, and management recommendations for prevention. Duane N. Rice, Extension Veterinarian
Rick Grant, Extension Dairy Specialist
Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Nutritional imbalances, deficiencies, or erratic management of feeding programs for dairy cows can create large numbers and various types of health problems generally categorized as metabolic diseases. Compounding the problem are the ever-changing nutritional needs of the cow, her lactation/dry period needs, feed quality changes, and producer personal management practices. Herd health programs as recommended by the veterinarian must include a way to avoid metabolic disorders and prevent or control infectious disease. Frequently when metabolic disease increases, opportunistic infectious disease also increases. Stress from metabolic problems may decrease the cow's resistance and compromise immune system function. If these diseases are not prevented, very costly consequences in the reproductive, milk production and human resource areas will occur. In some herds there have been death losses of up to 20-25 percent reported over a year's time, in addition to other related costs, as a result of these disease implications.

Faculty and students in the intervention and policy division create, implement, and evaluate nutrition programs and policies that impact on the health and well being of those in greatest need. A commitment to cultural sensitivity, participatory research, and university-community partnerships builds lasting relationships and facilitates high quality educational opportunities. It is anticipated that students completing the doctoral program will be excellent candidates for positions in academic centers, state and federal government, industry, and public health administration in an era when health promotion and disease prevention are a priority. Individuals entering the program with experience in the field can apply to the Public Health Leadership doctoral program to study public policy as it relates to public health nutrition. The Doctorate in Public Health can be earned through one year of residency and two years off campus completing a dissertation research project.
