The US food supply is described as one of the safest in the world. (See: Who is Protecting Your Food? ) However, without proper precautions, illness can happen. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 76 million people get sick, more than 300,000 are hospitalized and 5,000 Americans die each year from foodborne illness. Many more cases go unreported because sometimes foodborne illness is confused with symptoms of flu. In response to the number of illnesses caused by contaminated food, The University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service conducts food safety education for consumers in most counties in Tennessee. Education is delivered by Extension agents and paraprofessionals in programs such as the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), the Tennessee Nutrition and Consumer Education Program (TNCEP), 4-H and Family and Community Education (FCE). Food safety information also is available from the Internet and from publications at local county Extension offices. To find out more about food safety education in your county, contact your local office. Click

The Tennessee Century Farm Program
Carroll Van West, Ph.D.
The Tennessee Century Farms program honors family farmers who have kept continuously-owned family land in agricultural production for at least the last 100 years. Established by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture in 1975-1976 as a special bicentennial project, the program initially identified approximately 600 farm families. This group received a colorful metal sign to place by the roadside, identifying for travelers and neighbors their distinctive place in the state's history. Many of these signs remain in place today. In 1985 the Agriculture Department asked the Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University to join the program and to maintain the files of eligible farms. In 1987 the Department and the Center jointly published Tennessee Agriculture: A Century Farms Perspective , by Carroll Van West, a book available in most public libraries that lists and describes all of the Century Farms. The Center continues to accept new applications to the program and hopes to produce a second volume about the Century Farms in the near future.

ETHS Honors Tennessee's Civil War Heritage With New Genealogy Project ETHS Honors Tennessee's Civil War Heritage With New Genealogy Project The East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) is unveiling Civil War Families of Tennessee, a new family heritage program, as a follow-up to its popular First Families of Tennessee heritage project. Civil War Families of Tennessee (CWFT) seeks to identify and honor the sacrifices of the valiant soldiers on both sides of the conflict. This lineage program will link current descendants with their Civil War ancestors, encourage new research, and combine the experiences of thousands of individuals and families to tell more fully the story of the Civil War in Tennessee. If you are a direct or collateral descendant of any individual who served in Tennessee during the Civil War-Union or Confederate-you are eligible for membership in CWFT. Service may have been in either a Tennessee unit or any non-Tennessee unit that was active in the state. Membership is also open through an ancestor who served elsewhere but lived in Tennessee, before, during, or after the war. In order to recognize the service of the many young men who died unwed and without children, CWFT offers membership through collateral descent also.
