The State Board of Education is the governing and policy making body for the Tennessee system of public elementary and secondary education. Its work touches all facets of education from accountability and evaluation to curriculum and teacher education. The General Assembly created the current State Board of Education in 1984 when it adopted the Public Education Governance Reform Act. The legislation restructured the board, gave it increased independence, and expanded its duties. Although the Board works very closely with the State Department of Education, it is a separate full functioning state agency. The State Board of Education has a professional staff of research associates to provide ongoing policy research and analysis of public education issues including instruction, student assessment, and funding. The Board also works closely with the Tennessee General Assembly to secure legislative support for education. Through its annual report on student, teacher, and school performance, the Board provides the legislature and the general public with information about the status of education in Tennessee. The Board has developed specific strategies to accomplish its mission in the

The Board of Dentistry was created in 1957 by the State Legislature. Its mission is to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of Tennesseans by requiring those who practice as dentists, dental hygienists, or dental assistants within this state be qualified. The Board interprets the laws, rules, and regulations to determine the appropriate standards of practice in an effort to ensure the highest degree of professional conduct. The Board is authorized to issue licenses to qualified candidates who have completed appropriate education and successfully completed required examinations. The Board is responsible for the investigation of alleged violations of the Practice Act and rules and is responsible for the discipline of licensees who are found guilty of such violations. The administrative staff of the Division of Health Related Boards supports the Board by issuing licenses to those who meet the requirements of the law and rules. Renewal notices are mailed from Board’s administrative office 45 days prior to the expiration of the license to the current address on record. Licensees are responsible for reviewing their license on time and keeping the Board apprised of current information. Licenses can be renewed on-line 120 days prior to expiration at Tennessee.gov

Discipline Procedures for Students Eligible for Special Education Services
Fair and appropriate discipline procedures for an eligible special education student is a primary focus of the 1997 amendments to IDEA. However, there are often concerns about dealing with minor disciplinary infractions that are not specifically addressed in the law. The best advice I can proffer would be to suggest that IEP Teams consider every possible alternative and consequence that might be used with a disabled student who needs a Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) In essence, the BIP is where all disciplinary action should be developed and addressed for eligible students Once a school or teacher is aware that the student has behavioral issues that must be considered, the IEP Team should meet to develop a BIP and address the behaviors, develop strategies designed to teach the student about the appropriateness or inappropriateness of specific behaviors, and specify the consequences for each identified behavior when it occurs. Also, it is important that the BIP be modified regularly to correspond to the changing behaviors of the student.

In 1985, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued the "Public Health Service Policy (PHS) on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals by Awardee Institutions." Soon after came the revised "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals." In 1986, the PHS Office for Protection from Research Risks (OPRR) sent revisions of the PHS Policy to institutions who use research animals. These changes were mandated to conform with the "Health Research Extension Act of 1985." A significant change included in the revised policy is an "...explanation of the training or instruction available to scientists, animal technicians, and other personnel involved in animal care, treatment, and use." The most detailed provision for training of research staff in animal care and/or experimental procedures was included in the 1985 text of the "Improved Standards for Laboratory Animals Act"(Public Law 99-198), which amended the Animal Welfare Act. Subsequent proposed rules and regulations were published in the Federal Register in March, 1987 as promulgated by the Act and were finalized on August 31, 1989. These regulations state that:
