Project LINK: (Leaders In education Networking Kids) The Challenge.
Tennessee families of children with special needs are overwhelmed by the process of special education (IEP's, meetings, school policies, etc.). Parents who have previously attended training sessions are overwhelmed and afraid to work toward positive change in their communities. Many parents believe that litigation and negative interactions with schools are the only way to produce results for their children. Parents need an opportunity and supported practice to employ positive conflict resolution strategies and become empowered to effect positive change in their communities. What is Project "LINK"?
Project LINK gives parents of students with disabilities the knowledge and skills they need to change school systems into inclusive settings where all children, with and without disabilities, are educated in the general classroom. LINK teaches parents how the special education system works, the role and rights of parents in the process, and how to work within the system, and how to become an effective advocate. Parents who complete the training are asked to help other parents and attend IEP (Individual Education Plan) meetings with them. Parents are assisted in evaluating the education system in their area and in developing a plan to improve it.
