"The six bodies that grant accreditation to colleges and universities in the United States are near agreement on guidelines for evaluating distance education that differ from traditional accrediting standards by focusing on how much students learn. If enacted, the regional accrediting agencies would use the guidelines to set standards for granting accreditation to distance-education programs and institutions."

Accrediting Groups Issue Recommendations for Distance-Education Programs
"Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. But the recommendations won't become accreditation standards, says Charles M. Cook, the director of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges' Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. 'We've always considered them testimonials, not a new set of standards,' he says. 'It's always been the local regions' option of how to adopt them.'"

Dear Black Excel Student and Parent Supporters This is a quick gateway (below) that you should consider immediately to resource help. Each state has aid sources
you should inquire about. No question about that! These
aid sources cover a wide range of programs, sometimes
including resident and fee reductions, "incentive awards,"
grants, scholarships, loans and more. High school guidance
counselors should be keeping you abreast in regard to what's
available. Often, however, this has not been the case. This
is a BLACK EXCEL tip. Call or write the appropriate state
agencies for information packages and assistance. Getting
your state "info and financial aid" packages could mean
savings to you and your child/students. -Isaac Black, Black Excel S T A T E A I D S O U R C E S ALABAMA Alabama Commission on Higher Education Suite 205 3465 Norman Bridge Road Montgomery, Alabama 36105-2310 State Department of Education Gordon Persons Office Building 50 North Ripley Street Montgomery, Alabama 36130-3901

View Appplication Fact Sheet The State Scholars Initiative is a simple, low-cost, high-impact strategy to motivate students to complete high school courses that prepare them for college and careers. The Initiative places business people in classrooms to promote the study of math, science, language arts, and social studies (the Scholars course of study) immediately before students select high school courses. The Initiative also provides technical assistance to business/education coalitions working to align state policy with the Scholars course of study. Background
The Initiative is based on work done between employers and educators in communities in Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia dating back to 1988. On August 29, 2002, President George W. Bush and U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige launched the State Scholars Initiative to provide support to states' business and education coalitions committed to improving the academic achievement of high school students. The Need for Rigorous Coursework
Bureau of Labor Statistics projections show that 80 percent of the top 50 fastest-growing jobs will require education beyond high school and that 40 percent of all new jobs will require at least an associate's degree.

Tennessee STaR Chart: A Tool for Planning and Assessing School Technology and Readiness [2002]
The Tennessee STaR (School Technology and Readiness) Chart provides a means for plotting where a school's technology/readiness comes with respect to four key areas of technology and development. By completing the STaR Chart, a school has an instrument that can be used to plan for technology and professional development. The STaR Chart grid serves as a benchmarking tool because it presents four levels of progress for each of the focus points within each of the four key areas. These four levels of progress are Early Tech Developing Tech Advanced Tech Target Tech The four key areas assessed are: Teaching and Learning Educator Preparation and Development Administration and Support Services Infrastructure for Technology Each year, each school in Tennessee will be expected to complete the Tennessee STaR Chart as part of the federal education technology formula funds available to school districts under No Child Left Behind. The local district's Consolidated Application for federal funds includes the assurance that each school will complete the Tennessee STaR Chart and submit its scores as part of an online technology survey instrument. For 2002-3, the data collected will be used as baseline data for federal reporting purposes. Each subsequent year, the data will indicate school, district, and statewide progress.

Our priorities are:
  • Asthma : Providing patient, family, public, and professional education programs and information to help asthma sufferers manage their disease and live normal lives.
  • Air Quality : Working to improve the air we breathe, both indoors and outdoors, to improve lung health through public awareness and advocacy.
  • Tobacco Control : Fighting to reduce the disease and death caused by tobacco use through prevention and cessation programs, and legislative advocacy.
  • Funding of Lung Disease Research : Funding research to discover improved prevention and treatment techniques and ultimately, the cure for lung disease.
The American Lung Association is the oldest national health agency in the U.S. We began in 1904 as The National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis. At its worst, TB killed over 80,000 Americans annually. By the late 1960's our work and that of health professionals brought TB largely under control through education and newly available drugs. Since then, we have evolved and broadened our focus to include almost all forms of lung disease. In 1973, we became the American Lung Association. The American Lung Association of Tennessee was formed in 1910. We are a constituent of the nationwide organization.
